Just finished watching it. It's a great movie. Great characters, great CGI, great cinematography, and great plot. I really surprised with the ending.

A gorgeous movie. As a european with limited knowledge about chinese history and symbolism I probably missed a lot but I still loved every second. The characters are entertaining and likeable. The plot is a supernatural mystery/love story that can break your heart. You really should watch it.
@edukid19844 жыл бұрын
The tragic love story you referred to is in fact immortalised in a long poem 'A Song of Eternal Sorrow' by Bai Ju Yi (in a style similar to the Greek epics) dating from roughly the same time depicted in the movie (circa 805 AD). Several lines in that poem are pretty much known by heart to all Chinese speakers.

so i looked through the comment section i just want to clarify that no ma dudes, it's not entirely about a cat. it seems so at first but eventually sets into the setting of the story of Gui Fei's death and to keep things spoiler-free, watch the film and you'll find out what this whole demon cat is about. personally i loved it. it's done so beautifully!
@张研-x2e2 жыл бұрын
The film was inspired by an ancient Chinese poem "The Song of Everlasting Sorrow". Yang Guifei was a wife of Li Longji in the Tang Dynasty of China. However, the emperor was so obsessed with her beauty that he ignored the government and entrusted all the power to Yang's family. As a result, Yang's family had the idea of overthrowing the king, and only those loyal to Li would launch a rebellion. In order to highlight the romantic and sincere love between Li and Yang, the movie borrows the romantic writing from the poem.

I'm getting to like Chinese films more and more these days. The level of creativity and storytelling is evident. China really I think has come into a sort of Renaissance. Something of which we have unfortunately lost here in the West. This is the type of film I can just sit back and let myself get lost in. Finally a film in which the cat is put in its proper place. Much watch!! :b
@aarondodo40766 жыл бұрын
As you can see from the film itself, there have been many renaissances in Chinese history. The European Renaissance happened 500 years ago, China had 10X that lifespan, so it repeatedly goes into renaissance. Everytime it does, the world changes with it. The Tang dynasty was one of it and lasted hundreds of years. Then Song. Then Ming. Then (arguably) Qing. And now from the "century of humiliaton", China is awakening and repeating the pattern that she had always repeated. Really it shouldn't be a surprise --- and it's good that we all get to enjoy more artistry because of it!
@rkus076 жыл бұрын
mph seti renaissance happens or is the conscientious response to a culture of resistance & oppression. often defiance is the soul of renaissance.

I've seen both Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. That''s what I mean. Chinese cinematography has progressed A LOT since those movies. Also, they are such old movies now they're not worth comparing. "The Assassin" is a better movie for comparison.
