The last fight scene was made additionally difficult due to the fact that they couldn't use make up for Jackie's red face when he's super drunk, as he'd sweat and make the make up runny. So, he'd have to stand on his head first, making blood rush into his head and turn his face red, then they'd film the fight scene. At least until his face turned normal again and he'd have to repeat the process. Absolute madman.

Director Lau Kar-Leung, who Jackie fights under the train, was a genuine martial artist and a highly respected action choreographer long before becoming a legendary director, best known for The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. He was likely revered by Jackie Chan, but there was certainly no fear in him when fighting Jackie in Drunken Master II. They did have creative disagreements during filming-Lau Kar-Leung actually walked off the project, and Jackie ended up directing parts of the film himself.

Unlike the Academy Awards, the Hong Kong Film Awards actually has a category for stunt work called Best Action Choreography. The 14th iteration had fierce competition between Drunken Master II (JC Stunt Team & Lau Kar-leung), Fist of Legend (Yuen Woo-ping), New Legend of Shaolin (Corey Yuen), Bodyguard from Beijing (Corey Yuen & Yuen Tak), & Ashes of Time (Sammo Hung). DM2 ended up winning against three Jet Li films. Speaking of, can you guys please watch Lethal Weapon 4?

@PorungaSan
@PorungaSan 7 күн бұрын
This is a common complaint with dubs even today. So many movies and anime etc. have noticeably degraded audio quality in the dubbed version. That plus unnatural word choice because they are so bothered with syncing lip movement or other actions. Which is strange because I thought hollywood movies did a lot of ADR so shouldn't dubbing simply replace that audio track? Why/How come it is affecting mixing this much?
@MandoWookie
@MandoWookie 7 күн бұрын
I was actually hoping they would do the dub, to get George's opinion on how much the dub deviated from the original & if it materially made the movie 'distinct' or if it hewed close as can be expected barring translation issues.

@@Kari-qv1wn Yes, the English dub doesn't reference The Eight Drunken Immortals technique from the first film. Instead, Jackie says random things like "drunken maid flirting with the master", "monkey drinks master's wine", "eagle carries wine bottle", "uncle stirs the barrel", etc... Plus, that very last scene w/ JC before the end credits was cut out, to which George even says that he can't explain it.

There was a Huang Fei-Hung, who was a reknowed martial artist of the Hung-Gar style, he was also a Physician, accupuntirist and a Genuine Revolutianry fighting against the Colonialism of China at the head of a Militia he trained and formed in the early 1900. He was part of what people called "the 10 Cantonese Tigres"wich was the 10 most influencial and best Martial Artists of Canton. He was also nicknamed the "Lion King" due to his masterfull and gracefull Dance of the Lion he would perform at events. Born in 1847 and died in 1925 at the age of 77. The closest modern cinematic representation of his is by Jet Li in the "Once upon a time in China" movies, tho purists were kinda Mad, cause Jet Li uses Shaolin style Kungfu while Fei-Hung used Hung-Gar, so 2 different styles. Due to his High morales, Good nature and strong personality, his Education as a Physician and his discipline as a Martial Artist, he is the Chinese equivalant of Robin Hood, a Popular hero that has all the qualities you want to find in an heroic figure, that fight for the good of His people against Tyranny. Many representations were made, just like Robin Hood over the years. the 2 most well knowed are from Jet Li's "Once upon a time in China" and Jackie Chan's in the Drunken Master movies. In the movie "Around the World in 80's" from netflix Jackie Chan's character is actually Huang Fei-Hung brother's, wich is played by Sammo Hung. Donnie Yen also played the character in "Hero amongst Heroes" , in another movie he plays as Huang Fei-Hung father's "Iron Monkey".

2:00 "Wong FeiHung is a classic character..." George! For shame! Wong FeiHung (1847-1925) was a *real guy!* A turn of the century folk hero, analagous to Wyatt Earp. The actor most associated with him is Kwan Tak-hing who portrayed him at least 77 times from the 40's to the 80's. Jet Li's international breakthrough role was as Wong in the "Once Upon A Time In China" series. The most recent big hit movie about him is "Rise of The Legend" with Eddie Peng. His father was also a famous martial artist and the Donnie Yen movie "Iron Monkey" is about him. Wong's Drunken style master is also a famous prominent figure. "Beggar" So Chan was portrayed by Yuen Siu-tien in the first Drunken Master, and he has reprised the role a number of times, being the actor most associated with him. Stephen Chow (King Fu Hustle) based "King of Beggars" on him, and the most recent hit movies about him are the "Kung Fu Master Su" series; "Golden Pirate" and the sequel "Red Lotus Worm"

yes correct. there is a real person name Wong Fei Hung, but what i was referring to, the character portrayals of him in media are so fictionalized its basically a whole different (made up) person that happens to share the same name. there are versions of him that can do magic, that lived in different time periods, that has crazy wu xia/god level abilities, theres comics of him in modern times and ancient times. ive read depictions of him time traveling. so yeah, technically its base on a real person, in as much as Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is to the actual historical president.

@@lobogavrilov Oh, like how Owen Wilson portrayed Wyatt Earp in Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights? Coincidentally also starring Jackie Chan. I would argue that people such as Wyatt Earp, Davy Crockett, Daniel Boon, and Wild Bill Hickok would be Western analogies to Wong Fei Hung, in that they were real people who did some cool stuff, but have been exaggerated through repeated tellings and interpretations of their tales.

Thunderbolt next! About 'accidentally hitting: I remember him explaining in a 'making of' (I think it was of the first Rush Hour movie) that he prefers working with real martial artists who are experienced as opposed to 'stunt people', because them actively holding back and being careful actually makes scenes much more dangerous. He has this example of a guy who fights him on the roof and keeps being at a safe distance, which not only makes it look bad (with waaaay too much artificial distance between them), but also reduces control over the overall scene and it's impact; you're never sure yout fightpartner is in the right spot at the right time. Anyway: legend and an extremely nice and cool dude, as far as I can tell...

The movie is set roughly during the early period of the Republic of China, somewhere between 1911 and 1930. This was often known as the warlord period of Chinese history. My mother often said that Jackie Chan was the naughtiest boy she'd ever met and she'd often beat him up because of that. She was friends with the wife of his master at the Cantonese Opera School in Hong Kong, where such luminaries as Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung learned how to perform as children. Jackie would have been about eight or nine years old in those years. She said he was once beaten severely by the master for trying to catch a glimpse of the master's wife taking a bath.

If I remember correctly, the ending is so odd due to another conflict. Jackie was worried about kids emulating him and hurting themselves drinking alcohol, so he wanted to show at the end that there were bad consequences for drinking the industrial alcohol. Different cuts, one ending: "At the end of the movie, a Chinese general presents the Wongs a commemorative plaque to honor them for their service to the country and to offer Wong a job, only to find that Wong has suffered a bad hangover due to his drinking." The other ending: "Of all the films in Chan's back-catalogue that received North American theatrical distribution, Drunken Master II was cut the least. A scene in which Wong drunkenly sings at a café was re-cut slightly, making use of a few alternate takes not seen in the original Cantonese version. In addition, a 35 second cut was made to the concluding scene of the film which showed Wong blinded and mentally crippled as a result of drinking industrial alcohol during the film's ultimate fight. Played for laughs, the scene was considered to be in bad taste by the American distributor, Dimension Films." So that explains the weird ending.

The Character played by Jackie Chan, the way I understand George's explanation would be like Sherlock Holmes? It's an old character with an entire mythology that is really popular but has been played by many different people.

More like Wyat Earp, Tarantino made that comparison on the Iron Monkey dvd extras and I think it's pretty good. Real life guy who became legendary,Wong Fei Hung, as opposed to entirely fictional character, Mr Holmes

I've never seen this version. I've watched this a dozen times, sometimes dubbed, sometimes subbed. But this one is totally different, I like it way more.

You should watch "Iron Monkey" maybe? Donnie Yen plays the same character as Ti Lung here (Jackie's dad), who was a bit of a folk hero himself when younger. (it's also a really fun and funny movie)

This is my favorite Jackie Chan movie. His stunts in the scene where he uses that wooden bench is insane. BTW, I hadn't seen the first one before seeing this one.

“How scared that guy is to fight Jacky chan”. Oh you poor girl Simone. That guy was the patriarch of the Lui family. The direct descendent of Hung Gar and the legendary linage of Wong Fei Hung. Their family is the reason there is so many movies made about Wong fei hung. He is known as the “encyclopedia of kung fu”. He is one of two kung fu movie legends in this film. The other being the father Ti Lung. Drunken kung fu is a real style of martial arts. However the particular sub style, the eight drunken immortals, was created for the movies by Jacky but mainly Yuen woo ping for the first drunken master.

@@billbill6094 Actual fighting and stage fighting are two different things though. I'm not bashing him, just saying it's like saying Keanu Reeves would be an amazing spec ops soldier cause of what he does in John Wick.

Cool choice for a Jackie Chan film. This is one of his many films I haven't seen. In this reaction, when George explained to Simone about Wong Fei Hung and how it's a common Chinese name within their folklore. Which I didn't know at all. I recall a trailer for a Jet Li film entitled Once Upon A Time in China, where his character was named Wong Fei Hung. I didn't know the name was common in Chinese folklore. Appreciate the reaction and understanding of the name Wong Fei Hung. Keep going with your content CineBinge!

Having seen the first one, it's a lot of fun to watch the fights and pick out how he is combining moves from each of the "eight drunken gods/immortals". There really isn't room for it in this movie but I miss the training montages and practicing the forms.

I was still pretty young when this movie came out, and I knew who Anita Mui was.. I was at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City with my grand parents, and saw she had a show. I tried to convince them to let me see her, but they had other plans.

Drunken boxing is very much a real kungu style filled with taught forms based on the 8 Taoist immortals. It was said it was developed when the emperor of china decreed that monks could drink wine. It is rare today because it is probably the most difficult style to learn as you could imagine - and this is my top JC movie. ❤

Jackie Chan studied Chinese Opera, (which is extremely physical), in a boarding school. Pretty brutal training along the lines of a lot of the martial arts stuff. When you fall down you are expected to get up straight away and try harder. His father worked for a time as a cook at an Embassy in Australia, and Jackie worked on some construction sites there as a young guy. There is a documentary Jackie made some years ago.
