Sykes. All of them are amazing players, Bernie founded the band with Coverdale and wrote two huge hits, but Sykes created the Whitesnake sound. Everything I’ve read and seen - it really comes across as David Coverdale views it as his backup band. He’s fired an entire band more than once, including the ones who made WS a massive hit - Sykes, Murray, Airey and Dunbar were all gone before WS 87 came out. To me, John Sykes is up there as the leader of the second generation of rock guitarists after the Page, Beck, Clapton era. His work with Thin Lizzy and Blue Murder, and solo - amazing! I just wish he’d release Sy-Ops and go back out on the road or record some more - one of my guitar heroes. From the Tampa area, but played live in Boston in the 1980s and early 1990s until grunge ran off (my type of) guitar based music. I’ve since reconciled myself to it and become a big fan of some of the bands - STP, Foo Fighters, AIC, etc. PS - I always feel kinda bad for the guys from Winger including Reb - they’re all monster musicians, and we’re a great band, they became the stereotype for hairspray and pointy necked guitars - plus Beavis and Butthead killed their career.
@theguitartemplepriest

There is no competition. Sykes is such an amazing guitarist and musician. He is a great composer, guitarist and singer. Don’t forget a his stage presence. He’s the whole package. He can load songs with energy, excitement and magic like nobody else. This worked so well with Coverdale’s demos, which were not the most amazing starting point. John’s ability to improvise at the speed of light, sing always in tune and keep his phrasing always interesting shows high level of musicality. John’s swagger was a great match to Coverdale. John’s playing and Coverdale’s voice were the perfect match. It sucks that there was only one Sykes & Coverdale album, but the first Blue Murder album is my favorite album. After sykes Vivian Cambel was musically the best fit for the band.

You forgot Warren DeMartini, there's a great gig in Italy with him in it on YT. My favorite period was the Marsden Moody period due to it's more blues roots and I think Coverdale's voice is in its element. I think he should do another blues album before he's done. Maybe classic blues songs. The other gunslingers are all pretty much in the same boat of faster, more notes shred. Which is great and as we know the 1987 album the most successful, so JOHN SYKES is on the mantle of most successful. He co-wrote most of the songs too, which is a very important contribution.

John Sykes was the best guitarist for Whitesnake, but Coverdale and the music label wanted a more MTV friendly sound and image and sold out. They were a proper hardrock band, one of the best and then turned into a glamour band, wearing lipstick and move like strippers to attract young girl fans. Secojd best is Joel Hoekstra. Greetings from the Netherlands

I don't really have any favorites because it's not a competition. I think all these players are of a very high level. And they have all contributed to a beautiful Whitesnake period for several generations. it's a shame about Sykes that we only saw him for a very short period of time. And there is little to be found on this channel in terms of material from Sykes. While the other players of Whitesnake are still active in bands. After Whitesnake it was also the end of Sykes who made a nice album, but not a success. While Coverdale and Adrian wrote and arranged Slip of the Tongue with Steve Vai as guitarist due to Adrian's injury, Whitesnake subsequently bled to death and they were no longer successful with a beautiful bluesy 1997 album Restless Heart. A few years later the other very good guitarists came in a newly set up Whitesnake with different sounds, but the Hard/glamm rock was already a thing of the past and the old songs during the concerts were often of a high musical level, only Coverdale's singing voice belonged to the past.

My ears, ( and general consensus) is that the worst solo on any whitesnake song is Vandenburg's on the 87 here i go again version. It ruins the song worse than the synths that drown the production. The 87 album sold more than slip of the tongue. No one other than you, mentions him for 'superstar stud gunslinger' because at best he is a poor man's Michael Schenker. Sykes is the talent that allowed Vandenburg to make a living playing songs written and performed by Sykes, to the point that 40 years later, Sykes' songs and those performed by him, are played note for note, even co-opting the Sykes sound. Better, player, better, songwriter, better singer, better performer... by any measurable criteria other than your taste better. So live in your deluded bubble, and do yourself a favor, listen to Schenker, not a wannabe@@christervainio

@@andreaslechner-riedl Sykes is great but without Hendrix there would be no Rhoads Without Rhoads upping the Guitar World there would be no Sykes there is a huge year gap between all of them now like say Egor Paspalg he is just unread but years between, now as for a songwriter Yes Sir I Think he indeed is the best writer in multiple songs and I like his playing but for me i wouldn't compare say Hendrix to Stevie Ray or to Johnny Hilend Nor Andy James and certainly cant say compare Paspaj to Rhoads, Tina S to Billy Gibons,But yes indeed i respect your pick and his writing .

@@theguitartemplepriest don't know, if Rhoads influenced Sykes - i don't hear it in his playing. For me, Sykes is a complete other, higher level. No one of the other has the skills of Sykes. Rhoads playing is way more constructed. Aldrich isn't a very decent songwriter and Vai is the best, when he doesn't sing. So, overall, Sykes is my favourite in terms of playing, writing AND singing. Kotzen is a fantastic player and singer too but his songwriting isn't so strong. Stevie Salas and Nuno Bettencourt are also guys who are very fine overall. But you're right, it's not about comparing but simply enjoying all their great music. I just wanted to show my admiration for great Sykes who sadly seems to struggling for years now...
