Laser designators would be good to have in the hands of the infantry. These Hydra rockets and the larger Zuni's have guidance kits that allow them to hit pinpoint targets designated by infantry. Providing the rockets are fired in the direction of the target as they can only adjust so much. Then the aircrews could lob them from range like they often do but they would be able to hit individual positions or vehicles with accuracy. I'm pretty sure that Ukraine has been supplied rockets of both types fitted with guidance modules.

Question for those who would know more than me: Why don’t these Mi-24s carry ATGMs? I assume it would be difficult to employ them closer to the frontline with enemy IADS etc but I’m wondering if there are any available for Ukraine’s Hinds in the first place? Also if not, would it be possible to use Brimstone and Hellfire missiles integrated with the Mi-24 (with an additional lazing pod for target acquisition) Edit: Thank you for the answers :)
@tortillag7053 Жыл бұрын
From what i know these Mi-24s are old soviet style helos, they can carry a couple variants of ATGMS mostly for anti armor use, but the weapons system in the mi-24 compared to the modern ADS they are facing up against isnt worth the risk of loosing a helo, also these use of the unguided rockets are meants to serve as a indirect fire support AKA artilery, even if they used atgms they wouldnt risk it. since ukraine has better ATGM that they can use without risking lives ex: javelin, tow missiles etc that they can fire from the ground.
@FoxbatSqn120th Жыл бұрын
1. Because it would still require mi-24's to get close to the action. Which would ruin the element of ATGM. Atgm worked perfectly against Isis, because they didn't have solid AA capabilities. 2. They would have to undergo Updates. Which is not a problem since Ukraine does it will all their aircraft but statement number one rules out the need. 3. By using hydra they can pretty much usea fire and forget option as they show in the videos. Once the helo is raising altitude to fire it also has to get away real fast for the radar. Something ATGM prevents.
@haydengalloway5177 Жыл бұрын
Because these don't go anywhere near the front lines. They only have a handful of helicopters left and they keep them far away from the front.

@TheBongReyes Жыл бұрын
They can use ATGMs. But to utilize ATGMs, especially systems that Mi-24s can actually use, would mean getting closer to frontlines. That would expose them to Russian air defenses… Pantsir, manpads, etc. If the Ukraine could use their helicopters closer they would. Russia has more helicopters so they’ve used them more as airborne indirect fire and ATGM strikes. But they’ve lost more airframes because of it. It would be the same results if Ukraine used their aircraft in a similar matter.

I remember reading a few years ago that the US military had found a way to retrofit the old, unguided Hydra missiles with relatively cheap bolt-on guidance systems with some sort of sensor on the nose - I think laser seeking(?) - to make them more lethal. They were considered to be a game changer in the article I read - in no small part because of the economics and the destructive power already inherent in the unguided Hydras. I wonder if some of those kits made it to Ukraine as well? 🤔
@avus-kw2f213 Жыл бұрын

It's interesting how so many on here are calling for Ukraine to receive Apaches without really understanding the nature of this conflict and how it is different to what the Apache has fought in. In the two Gulf Wars and Afghanistan, Apaches hugely benefited from having air superiority and facing an enemy which either didn't have much in the way of air defence to counter them (ie the Taliban) or where air defences were overwhelmed and suppressed by the air superiority the Allies had in the two Iraq Wars. Ukraine is a completely different kettle of fish. This is a peer/near peer conflict which means both sides are roughly evenly matched in capabilities with neither side having a clear advantage in the skies. Russia might have a slight edge there in that their air force is more numerous and has longer range missles, but even they are restricted to largely operating in friendly airspace as Ukraine has a more than capable air defence system which is preventing from them from having air superiority across the whole of Ukraine like the US enjoyed. If you think Apaches are going to do that much better than Mi-24's or for example the often discussed A-10's will do that much better than Su-25's than you don't truly understand this conflict. Definately they will bring greater capabilities then their Soviet era counterparts, but the highly contested nature of the air space over Ukraine including the numerous Manpad usage all across the front, will severly limit what they will be able to achieve. It's at that point you need to ask yourself is it really worth all the effort training pilots/maintenance crew and setting up logistics for a helicopter/aircraft which will provide very little benefit to Ukraine. I'm pretty sure the Pentagon and other defence officials across NATO and other Allies already know the answer to that hence why it's not even on the table.

Wonder if you could put some of those guided Zuni rocket conversions on or do that with some of the bigger soviet single tube attack rockets and guide them from the UAS like the arty. How about a conversion to get old Mavric missiles on Hinds and hips and use all the extra seating on both to man multiple missile TV guidance seekers at once and do what the KA52 is doing at stand off range but with mavs having their own seaker and like 3-4 guys operating their own MFD each so they can scan more faster then probably even the ka52 2 man crew with one gimble FLIR painter.

Why not have the mi-24 have a dedicated drone operator fly with them and increase target acquisition, mark targets, and lowering loiter time increase overall effectiveness.
