Simon you Quote Erwin Bartmann as a source… but there is ZERO chance you read that book. He isn’t a Nazi, he never even joined the Nazi party 🤦🏻♂️ Yes he was a nationalist. So is every SF type unit in any army on the planet. Only the most dedicated patriot style warriors need apply. At no point does he mention spending time on “party & political education” strictly physical. Camaraderie was near the top of training lockers weren’t allowed to closed or locked bc stealing from comrades was UNTHINKABLE. They loved Sepp Deedrick however Sepp had ZERO MILITARY XP. However they did have many talented field commanders. I highly recommend your listen to Erwin Bartmanns audiobook the tale & narration are top notch!

Simon, thanks for this truly excellent presentation. My uncle was captured by the Leibstandarte at Vevi Greece in 1941 after his Brigade held the pass as long as they could. Finally the panzers broke through and his escape was thwarted as he was holding one end of the stretcher trying to get a seriously wounded man away. He had a lifelong, grudging admiration for the standard of their soldiering, their training and the fact that they were superbly equipped with uniforms and weapons, just as you say.

They first saw action during the Normandy landings but were relentlessly bombed due to the allies having complete air superiority. Having said that, they still performed very well but didn’t quite live up to potential due to the aforementioned reasons.

LAH also had first pick on recruits even after the conscription came in effect. They also had first pick on inter-service transfers. Coupled with their priority in equipment and supply; no doubt they were expected to perform better. PS: very good short on complex subject.

The Japanese were in my opinion the worse. To be alive during this time must of been horrifying and unstable. How the surviving troops could come home and pursue lifes ambitions without devolving into a mental deficient mess of PTSD, depression, and drug addiction is beyond comprehension. Calling them the greatest generation is understandable, but at what cost, or better yet, how much of thier own souls did it cost to achieve that greatness?

That's actually a good idea for a series of units... I'm especially interested in the one named Viking. As we all know, the WW2 brought the worst the man can offer, learning more about this is actually a good way to show the history. Man will say that it offends them, but ignore them. Showing the wrongs of man is a proper way to teach the History! A whole series about the main units of both sides, of which most of them made documented atrocities against the Mankind, would be great. P. S. Simon, I said that quite a few times already, You have to work on Your prenouciation, You're butchering the names in most incredible way 🤣🤣🤣🤣

If you really want to know the best German unit of WWII it’d have to be 4th Panzer Division. If you only count officially awarded Knight’s Crosses, the 4th got even more than Das Reich. It also had more recipients in every single category of the 4 high awards for bravery that Germany gave to ground units than Das Reich. If any German unit from WWII deserves to be called the most elite, it is the 4th.

@willjapheth23789 Like any other war, WW2 is very black and white right after it ends and is firmly embedded in the ideological foundation of the new order that follows its conclusion. With a clearly good side that behaved nothing short of chivalrously, with nothing less than the highest moral convictions, which curiously align exactly with the world view of anyone who is born after the war. The other side is seen and portayed as almost inhuman and devilish. In a conflict between diametrically opposed ideologies, the losing one and everything and everyone attached with it, are obviously the embodiment of everything which is wrong and evil. That status quo holds up for 50-150 years, until the "new" order cracks and crumbles, and is then replaced by something else. Eventually future historians are much less invested concerning their personal world view and history looks back at both the "good" and "bad" guys in a much more dispassionate and objective manner. Looking back the focus is then placed on the big picture and on factors that contemporary witnesses didn't even know of. And just like if you could ask anyone about France and the conduct of french soldiers ca. 1812, future people will be surprised by today's attitudes and laugh about our ignorance.
