One thing I love about these shootouts by year is checking out how the auto makers hopscotched each other with platform changes and body panel changes. Here in '69 it was the first year for the new, much larger Mustang design, though still on a ten year old Falcon platform, the GTO and Superbee in their second year showing how cutting-edge Pontiac's designers were, and finally the Camaro, Chevy's late entry on it's third and final year of generation 1 body design.

A 1969 Chevelle, purple with the white hood stripes. His wife came out and got in it, started the car and lifted the clutch and the car planted here foot on the gas pedal and it ripped out the driveway, arched into the driveway pillars and smashed into it as it spun to a stop. she got out ran into the house and screamed, YOUR SELLING THAT F-ING DEATH TRAP! My first car, I purchased in 1976, was a mint condition 1969 GTO Judge Ram Air IV. I remember that my uncle and I drove up to the guy that was selling it, and we both looked at each other, and said, this is the one. One the way, as I was diving her back home, I was overly cautious, actually downright intimidated by the power this machine had. I remember that I took the back way home, and there was a little import following me way too close, honking for the passing lane. I slowed down to about 45, and he pulled into the passing lane. I heard his little 6 cylinder doing all it could do, as his tranny shifted into passing gear. Instead of me dropping into 3rd, I simply floored the GTO, and as the secondaries kicked in, I looked over quickly, to see a frustrated import not being able to pass, and me pulling swiftly away. I'll never forget the look of disgust on the other drivers face, as he was completely unable to pass me. The amount of pure torque that engine had was really something. I really miss that car. Lots of great racing and memories.

Funny in the 69 RamAir lV 400 only a 730-750 CFM Quadrajet. I parted out a rusted out 1976 T/A who’s OEM 400 had its original 800 CFM Quadrajet. It’s now been built up by Cliff Ruggles to 830+CFM and feeds my Butler/Murgic Racing 1969 406. My 3212 Lb 1964 Tempest runs 11.03 @ 121mph in the 1/4 currently. I still have a set of 340CFM CNC ported KRE heads with portmatched Northwind intake to put on and fiberglass hood, trunk lid & bumpers soon to install. I’m pretty sure it will be a 10Sec car after that, 😉.

The GM A bodies were easily the best overall muscle cars because they had the best chassis/suspension as well as engines that made a ton of power without much difficulty. MOPAR had some really badass engine packages (six packs and hemi's) but they really do handle like shit. Ford just didn't have the same power output as the others. People love to point at the Boss 429, but in reality they are dogs bone stock because Ford detuned them too much for the street (they're real screamers in race tune though). The FE is a great engine and runs really well, but wasn't designed as a performance engine since it was originally a truck engine which does put it at a bit of a disadvantage to the big blocks that were designed as performance engines from day 1. I wasn't surprised the AMC did well. I worked at a drag strip for a while and every AMX I ever saw ran like a scalded cat. Very underrated muscle cars. I'd love to see them do the same kind of test with some of the small block cars like the L79 Nova, DZ and Boss 302, and a 340 six pack MOPAR. You could also include the Pontiac Firebird since there is no Pontiac big block or small block. They all use the SAME basic engine design.

1968 was the last year for vent wing windows on all redesigned GM midsize cars, especially for convertible and 2 door hardtop. For 1969, adjustable head restraints come, and vent wing windows go. For 1968 Ford, Lincoln Continental and Mercury full size cars, both adjustable head restraints and vent wing windows are still available, including the convertible and 2 door hardtop.

Not quite. I remember going to a few showrooms back then and paid close attention to whether the cars had vent wings or "Astro Ventilation" as they called it back then. I was in high school and my friends and I would look for that and the side marker lights to tell if a car was newer.

Davros Caan, Correction: all 1969, 1970, 1971, and 1972 GM mid size cars still uses vent wing windows on 4 door station wagon, 4 door pillared sedan, 4 door hardtop sedan, and 2 door post sedan, but not on 2 door hardtop and convertible. That's make more sense.

I heard there was no phase 1 and 2 but phase just sounded better. Sixpack launched great but shocked about not pulling near top end but I guess the weight held it back. Smokey Yunick was directly responsible for the final engine position of the '66 Chevelle's with big blocks. Smokey at that time was a engine/car tester and consultant for Chevy ( he did the same for Ford and Pontiac at other times ). He complained to the Chevy brass and told them the car was too nose-heavy, and that they needed to move the big block back 4" and lower it 3" as well. Even though the Chevy plant already had the jigs made to mass produce the firewalls, Chevy brass granted Smokey's recommendation and totally redesigned the firewall so that the engine would be dropped and moved back. Smokey tested the car again, and was very pleased with the results. He said the car actually felt "kind of racey". Why am I telling you this? Because in the same true story, Smokey stated that he saved the '66 Chevelle ( and later models ) from being a disaster in the handling department, and that title goes to ALL the Ford Mustangs equipped with big blocks being way too nose heavy. Carrol Shelby was totally against putting a big block in his Shelby Mustangs, citing that the 289 small block would run circles around it on road courses. But under pressure from Ford brass, Shelby relented, and gave them the big block Shelby's.
@Thomas63r23 жыл бұрын
That Smokey Yunick story never happened. The '66 Chevelle's big block was in the same exact position as on the 1965 Z16 - which Smokey had nothing to do with.

EXTENSIVE MODIFICATIONS were required to put anything bigger than a 302 in a mustang!
@howabouthetruth21573 жыл бұрын
@@Thomas63r2 I don't know why in the hell I said "66 Chevelle". It was the '64 Chevelle, the very first yr of production, and YES, Smokey Yunick DID advise Chevy brass to drop that big block down and move it back. Because he tested a prototype BEFORE AND AFTER moving the engine. My mistake on saying "the '66 Chevelle" earlier.......but I know I am correct about Smokey really pissing off the guys at the Chevy plant who already had the jigs made for mass producing the firewalls, and I can't recall the head honcho's name at the moment who hired & paid Smokey at Chevy, who took Smokey's sage advice seriously & ORDERED them to move the engine & build all new jigs for a different firewall to accommodate the different engine position for the big block.
@Thomas63r23 жыл бұрын
@@howabouthetruth2157 Sorry, I'm not buying the story that because of what Smokey said that they retooled the Chevelle AFTER the car was tooled up for production. No brass at GM ever wanted to be the one who held up production. Its the same firewall in all A bodies of the era in all the GM divisions, so you are not talking about changing tooling at just one plant - but at all the plants producing A body cars across all the divisions.

I'm a BBC bloke, but I've always had a soft spot for 66 to 70 GTOs, especially Green 69s. Another category you could list is anger, how angry does it sound? The Baldwin/Motion Camaro sounded plenty healthy, but it needed some slicks and ladder bars to step into the ring. The Royal Pontiac GTO sounded like it took a deep breath, got up on the balls of it's feet and came out swinging. All of the others sounded tired and flat. The Nova was clearly not sorted (as described). An L72 should sound crisp, not flat. The AMC, Dodge and Shelby all needed a decent exhaust to let them breathe.

Royal Pontiac was doing Pure Stock supertunes on their engines before it was cool! If the Pontiac really wanted to be sneaky, there could be a 428 under the hood. All normal production Pontac blocks, except for the decked 301's, look exactly the same, and have the same external dimensions. It was one advantage Pontiac had, that 350 or 400 badged car could have a 428 or 455 in it, and unless your really knew what to look for, you couldn't tell the difference.

Not surprised by the 440 Super bee as a winner in the 60ft race. The torque in these engines is amazing and Dodge always did seem to have cars set best to launch at the drag strip. I was a little surprised to hear them say it failed to show good power in the remainder of the run. The 440s didn't show the breathing potential of the HEMI cars at high RPM but they will wallop a HEMI all the way up to 4000-4500RPM on torque. This may not make them as good a drag race motor as Hemi but it's far from the ingredients of an engine you'd ever call out as "weak". Makes me wonder if it's giving it's all or if this one isn't really up to potential.
