1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger
1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6
1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429
1969 Hurst Oldsmobile
1969 Pontiac GTO Judge
Utilizing the same tires, same brake pads, and same conditions, who will reign supreme? Peter Klutt and Tom Hnatiw ignite over 3000 horsepower in a series of 0-60 and 1/4 mile acceleration, 60-0 braking, fastest slalom and longest burnout, the FASTEST MUSCLE CAR OF ALL TIME will be crowned!
1. 1969 AMC AMX 390 Go Package
The AMC AMX is a two-seat GT-style muscle car produced by American Motors Corporation from 1968 through 1970. As one of just two American-built two-seaters, the AMX was in direct competition with the one-inch (2.5 cm) longer wheelbase Chevrolet Corvette, for substantially less money. The Go Pack on the 1969 AMC AMX included the 390 cu in (6.4 L) high-output four-barrel V8 engine with a dual exhaust system and chromed exhaust tips, heavy-duty cooling system, power front disc brakes, uprated suspension for improved handling, "Twin-Grip" limited-slip differential, wide-tread red striped tires mounted on five-spoke "Magnum 500" wheels, and over-the-top racing stripes.
2. 1970 Buick GS 455 Stage 1
The Gran Sport 400 was replaced for 1970 with the Buick 455 cu in (7.5 L) V8 engine, used in the GS 455. The base model was rated at 350 bhp (355 PS; 261 kW) and 510 lb⋅ft (691 N⋅m; 71 kg⋅m) at 2800 rpm of torque. In the optional Stage 1 trim equipped with a single 4-barrel Rochester Quadrajet carburetor was rated at 360 bhp (365 PS; 268 kW) SAE gross at 4600 rpm and 510 lb⋅ft (691 N⋅m; 71 kg⋅m) of torque at 2800 rpm.
3. 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger
Challenger R/T, with a 426 cu in (7.0 L) Hemi rated at 425 hp (431 PS; 317 kW) at 5,000 rpm and 490 lb⋅ft (664 N⋅m) of torque at 4,000 rpm. The standard transmission was a 3-speed manual. The R/T was available in either the hardtop or convertible. The Challenger R/T came with a Rallye instrument cluster that included a 150 mph (240 km/h) speedometer, an 8,000 rpm tachometer and an oil pressure gauge.
4. 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS6
The SS 454 included the 360-hp, LS5 454, heavy-duty suspension, SS wheels, power front disc brakes, dual exhausts with chrome tips, wheel arch moldings, blacked-out grilles and the SS rear bumper treatment. The LS6's iron block was outfitted with four-bolt main caps for added strength. Inside, forged-aluminum pistons and forged-steel connecting rods swung from a forged-steel crankshaft. The LS6 used solid lifters and an aggressive cam with .520 lift and 316 degrees duration.
5. 1969 Mustang Boss 429
Only offered for two years, the Mustang BOSS 429 was advertised at 375 bhp (380 PS; 280 kW) at 5200 rpm and 450 lb⋅ft (610 N⋅m) of torque at 3400 rpm. The speed equipment manufacturer Crane Cams tested engines that were stock as manufactured, with the exception of substituting tubular headers for the stock cast iron exhaust manifolds. For the 1969 hydraulic cam engine, they measured a peak of 352.0 bhp (262 kW) at 5500 rpm. The 1970 mechanical cam engine measured better, with a peak of 366.5 bhp (273 kW), also at 5500 rpm.
6. 1969 Hurst Oldsmobile
Following the success of Hurst components in Oldsmobile's 442 models, Oldsmobile, in collaboration with Hurst Performance, produced special-edition performance versions of the 442 or Cutlass Supreme, the Hurst/Olds. The 455 cubic-inch Rocket V8 (W46) was rated at 380 horsepower (280 kW) and 500 lb/ft of torque. The engine received a unique intake manifold, chrome steel valve covers, and a special vacuum operated air cleaner lid to allow cold air from the hood scoop into the carburetor. This was backed up by a specially calibrated code OH Turbo 400 transmission and 3.42 gears for non-A/C cars or 3.08 gears for cars with A/C. Optional 3.91 gears were available only for non-A/C cars.
7. 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge
The 1969 GTO Judge engine was the Pontiac 400-cid/366-hp Ram Air III V-8. It came linked to a three-speed manual transmission with a floor-mounted Hurst T-handle shifter and a 3.55:1 rear axle. The more powerful 400-cid/370-hp Ram Air IV engine was installed in 759 cars in the same two lines and 59 of these cars were convertibles. The Judge option was added to 6,725 GTO two-door hardtops and only 108 GTO ragtops.

Something wrong with the motor on the AMX it is not that low in a 0-60 run. I won't blame the driver because i think higher of him than that. But either way if you wanted the best AMC from 70 you should've used " The Machine " with the service performance package. Those cars wouldn't keep up. Anyone in the 70's knew if one of those showed up to the track they could just put their cars on the trailer because The Machine was a runner. Low 10's

@Steve Miller I totally agree with you, so many cars from the mid '60s to about 1971 are IMO classics in form and function. I Can't deny how great a Cuda or Camaro look. The '68 Fastback Mustang, 390/4-Speed, who wouldn't want to feel like Steve McQueen driving around. Still though, the 1969 Mustang Styling somehow captures what I think is the epitome of the era. I'd like to add that growing up (I'm 60 years old) my older cousin had a 1981 BOSS 351, OMG that was a Spaceship/Cool car.

I’m a fan of all these cars; although, I favor the BOSS 429. Despite my bias, I don’t think this test is fair due to the Challenger being hindered due to a worn clutch. If the cars are to be “tested as they came from the factory”, shouldn’t the clutch been replaced before the shootout? Maybe they just didn’t have the time to replace the clutch. Great show, and an impressive lineup!

The only real answer to this question is...the one that YOU drive and enjoy. I don't care what brand or model it is, as long as the owner enjoys the car, that's what's most important. I love my 1970 L34 Chevelle. My best friend loves his 1968 Dodge Charger with a 383. Both are 4 speed cars and we have a lot of fun playing around with them. Just F.Y.I., the "burnout contest" doesn't impress me.

Serious props to the producers of the show for using actual unmodified muscle cars. Impossible to find those outside of museums and even very slight modern improvements can affect performance a lot and distort the results. My favorite of the era is Ford because at the time Ford was all over the world representing the U.S. in road, endurance, and rally racing. Even had their name on the dominant Formula 1 engine of the time. Stateside they did great in NASCAR and drags too but it seems like the complaint about Ford is their best production high performance cars were never built in the mass quantities Chevy and Mopar put out. For example I think there were about 4X as many LS6 Chevelles built than Boss 429's.

Whats really interesting to me is that the Boss 429 was significantly detuned for the street in production cars. Some sources claim over 135 hp and 75 ft lbs worth of detuning for the street. I wonder what it would be capable in a mustang if not detuned . I imagine it would of suffered some significant drivability issues on the street but I bet it would have been a mean SOB on the highway .

This was very fun to watch! I loved it! I believe yrs ago I actually read this very article in a magazine. But to get to watch it & listen to you guys comment & horse around was the best! And I am very shocked! I am a ford guy. I love all muscle cars & trucks but my blood is blue. My experience with alot of performance engines has come In the form of 4x4 trucks though. Mud trucks! So I have alot of hands on with 429/460 engines & FE 390/410 engines & I can say first hand both those engine designs are truly legendary & capable of being at the top of any competition. But these, super hero engines like the boss 429 I know about from basicly bench racers & like you guys mentioned magazine articles. As a 14yr old kid that dousnt really know why a engine is great but just believes he dous becouse of the legendary statis. Over the yrs the more "inside" info I got on the boss 429 I started to get my dreams squashed by all negative gossip. And I have kinda believed it. I have been told the boss 429 was great at doing what it's soul purpose was, Nascar! It's was a screemer out on the roundy round. But in street trim it fell flat on its face. Choked out with small carbs & undersized cam & heavy internals they have made me believe the 429 boss mustang was a collectable. But to go fast it was more of a Zero than a Hero. Now at 44yrs old & much more educated on the inside of a engine I have realized alot of the garbage that was fed to me was from guys that have never even stood beside one or listen to one run let alone drive or work on one. The garbage was fed to them & if there daddy's said chevys were the best then if someone served them a plate of bullshit that said fords are slow on top they slop it up with a big shit eatin grin! Im happy to see the ford do so well in amongst such legendary statis. I am interested to see how a 428 scj could have faired in this group.

I almost expected as much from the mustang. Too bad they didn’t have a boss 02 to see how interesting the two mustangs would be. My big disappointment was the a MX. Short light and nimble. I expected much better My big surprise was the other heavyweights the Buick the GTO etc. Thanks. Great video.

I love the Olds engines. But in a Buick. I had a 1978 Buick Riviera with an Olds 403. It was a spectacular car. Luxury with some performance. And a extreme long life. It had close to 1 million miles or perhaps over the 1 million miles. The odometer quit around 500 thousand miles. I wish I still had that car. Even with all the problems with the body work. If I could find one with low miles and set up like my Riv. I would buy it. Thank you for the show it was awesome. Glad the Buick made a great showing.

Miss tom alot..you guys had such chemisty..I have all those minus the amx, run in true street. Bucks eat lunch. My 70 ragtop auto with bias ply tires, all orig cars. I run 1311 108 with stock tires, 12.50 dragradials only. My boss 429 goes 12.98 on drag radials. But thts years of playin on street. I've had buick since 79, rest mid 80s. No one has touched them. Chevelle with 410 gear and auto runs 1319 at 114 mph . Chevy always more mph. I have many built bucks, one gsx. 500 hp but real num is 356 to rear wheels, it runs 1190 at 110. So no mph but quick. 1.72 60 ft time on drag radials. Tht car been run 300 times easy last 30 yrs. With ac.. so not slugs like some say. Yes my new suv and trx are quick. Muscle cars are cars you have to actually drive. Great job guys.

An excellent project and a great video as well as the correct era! Unfortunately, GM had 4 divisions covered you missed a couple more to complete the test. Plymouth’s Road Runner with the 6 pack for sure and how about Mercury? Anyways for those that you covered highly entertaining! Too bad about the bad clutch in the Challenger.

I cut my teeth drag racing during the era of these cars. They were so much fun to drive. I have driven most every model you guys tested. When drag racing them back in those days it could really get tricky getting them off the starting line. I actually learn how to launch with one of the hardest to control traction. A 1968 Shelby GT 500 Convertible with a 3.00 rear end. The car really ran good all considering but it was so hard to control wheel speed with that high of a gear ratio. I did drive a lot with 3.90 and lower rear ends and much easier but still tricky. We did a huge amount of street racing and most of our cars we had in the 4.30 to 4.57 range gears. I had a Boss 302 with a 5.47 rear end and drove it everyday but rarely on the highway. We were all about 1/4 mile and could care less how the gears hurt fuel economy on the highway. New era performance cars are way more powerful with superchargers and advanced technology but there will never be a more fun era than the mid 60’s to 1971. Hanging out at the drive inn restaurants cruising Main Street all night and the best music ever.

This was a great concept and made for an interesting shootout, But what would have made it truly awesome would be if it were an actual apples to apples comparison of the best offerings from each manufacturer. You really cant compare a 1969 ram air 3 Judge to a 1970 GS 455 or a 455 powered hurst Olds and call it a fair comparison. To make it a truly fair and epic shootout you would have to select all models from the same year, Say 1970 and choose cars with the top engine offerings that year. The GTO would get the RAIV, the Buick the stage 1 455, The chevelle the LS6 454, etc. and all the cars should have been similarly geared and with the same types of transmission, be it manual or auto. Then you could truly crown the "ultimate muscle car" I understand this was a long time ago and perhaps those cars were not available to them, I'm just saying someone should revisit this......
@f4udhorn

And you would've gotten the killer of them all: A 429CJ 701/2 FALCON.
@nealivers7479
@nealivers7479 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same... The RAIII is *not* the equal of the LS6, HEMI, etc. The RAIV with a 4spd and maybe 3.90 rear WOULD be the actual apples to apples comparison. Other than that...I live seeing these cars run, as I am the owner of a 1970 GTO Convertible, with a but of work done :)
