The video does make a bad habit of comparing Kobe to "league average". I think you need to distinguish between that and where Kobe's reputation puts him. When compared to the average player? Sure he's got nothing to be ashamed of. Compared to the greatest players of all-time? There he doesn't come off so well. Especially since so much of his game comes as a scorer when other all-timers had better TS% (both in raw numbers and in context of their time) while their games weren't as heavily reliant on scoring.

I had a friend who was a Lakers fan and we'd get together and watch the game every time they played each other. Kobe would make some crazy shot or something towards the end of the game if the Lakers were down and I remember one specific time I just let out a heavy sigh and said "here we go...". In the playoffs, Kobe has a HIGHER Career Defense Adjusted True Shooting Percentage than Larry Bird, Giannis, Duncan, Harden. I am really just thankful you made this video. I grew up watching Kobe and legitimately never could wrap my head around that narrative. I never sat down and did the research like this but just watching him play it was never “let him shoot” we yell Kobe when we shoot for a reason. Sitting down and watching his competition you subconsciously take the defense being played on him and what the game was like at the time into consideration and it’s baffling to me that so many people make that argument. Kobe was a dog in arguably the hardest conference in nba history, he had a million moments against some of the greatest teams all time and consistently played them better than anyone else played them and for lack of better words it really pisses me off how much lack of context there is to that argument. Kobe had the greatest scoring game of all time and I don’t want to be hyperbolic but it was on par with who he was as a scorer. When Kobe dropped 81 everyone was in awe but no one was shocked. Kobe was a threat 100% of the time with and without the ball and it kills me that everything is just boiled down to pure numbers that aren’t even applicable to when he was playing while none of his contemporaries face the same criticism

Looking at 3 point shooting. Which is at 34% or above for 5 of the 13 seasons you mentioned. Kobe averaged 4.4 attempts converting 33.6% for that period. Which is his weakest variable, but is above 33.333333% So that gets 1.008 points per shot. Perhaps the other seasons where he was bellow 33.33% are what people were using for the narative as back then 4-5 shots for 3 point attempts was a lot. He also took a lot of mid range jumpers which are known as not efficient shots. But again his 2pt percentage over that period is 0.484 on 17.2 attempts. That weighs at 0.968 points per shot, which is a good conversion rate for a guard. Kobe has 8.4 free throws and made 84.1% of them. 28.1 points off of 30 shots a game. Dwayne Wade averaged from 04-05 to 12-13 a two point conversion of 0.513 1.026 on 16.7 shots. So that is Kobe taking half an extra two point attempt a game to score half a point less than D Wade. Further D Wade took fewer 3 point shots and made less than 30% of them. D Wade also shot 76.8% on free throws at 9 attempts per game, where Kobe was taking more and averaging above 80% as D Wade was an allstar every year in this period and an NBA champion twice, including one time Finals MVP. So Kobe compares favourably in his period to his biggest competator. 25.6 points off of 27.5 shots. Ray Allen 2000-01 to 2007 his career peak. 2pt percentage 0.48 on 11 attempts, 3pt percentage 0.4 on 7.2 attempts, free throughs 4.8 attempts 89.6%. 23.4 points off 23 shots. Ok I think Kobe is more efficient than peak D Wade in this period. He is slightly less effective than peak Ray Allen although he gets you 5 more points in a low scoring league. Also that is peak Ray Allen so who you going to give those extra possessions to? Shaq in the first few years yes, but after Shaq, Pau has 17.9 on 18.1 shots between 08-09 and 12-13. Kobe is up there as an efficient scorer. Perhaps the main thing killing him is Michael Jordan having a higher fg% than Kobe. Jordan from age 22 to 34 averaged 32 points off of 32.5 shots. Granted 2 of those seasons are with a shorter 3point line. Kobe 0.9366 points per shot, Jordan 0.9846 points per shot. Jordan shot 3.2 attempts and 3.6 attempts on those seasons then dropped back to 1.5 attempts a year later when the 3 point line moved. Since Jordan is the GOAT SG and probably the GOAT I think Kobe compares favourably. Oh and Reggie Miller from age 22-34 is shooting at above 1.0 points per shot but averaging 19.5 so I haven't put him in this for depth. George Gervin 22-32 has a very good rate of conversion but played in a completely different eara. 26.2 points from 26 shots. His peak years at the Spurs are great btw. I can only assume Kobe is inefficient by the argument he takes mid range jumpers, had games where he shoots the 3 pointer badly and was a high volume shooter who would not stop shooting through a dry streak. Looks weak as an argument when you compare him to all time greats and his peers. Havent even looked just at the peak seasons yet. 33.5 points off of 35.1 attempts this is his two seasons with no help. 1.0 might be the standard but as the only scorer on a bad team taking high volume that is a great conversion level. 0.95441 points per shot from a guard.

I think this narrative started as ppl stopped almost universally considering him a top 3 scorer by saying he's inefficient when compared to the other all time great scorers. Which is true, while kobe was definitely not inefficient, when you compare him to guys like mj, bird, Bron, kareem, shaq, or Kd they all are more efficient when you look at true shooting. They all have multiple high scoring seasons/post seasons with a true shooting above 60 where kobe's highest in his career is 58 for a season and he only did it once. So, I think this probably started in the context of comparing him to specifically the greatest scorers in nba history + most missed shots in history and the 04 finals.

Another extremely ridiculous narrative is he was a ballhog. At times he did take bad shots and was selfish (2004) but he's actually one of the best passing SG's of all time. He's 13 all time at his position for apg (4.8) and 2nd all time at his position for total assists (6,122) being 3 assists lower than 1st Clyde Drexler (6,125) and the next highest being Jeff Hornacek with (5,281). Like all casuals, you're CHERRY PICKING. Why game 7s? Why not general finals averages? Why artificially weigh certain games more than other games? If you play well in, say game 6, there is no NEED for game 7. So why the artificial weight put on game 7? It's completely arbitrary. Why not just cite the finals averages vis-a-vis the other player averages in the same finals thus giving us an apples to apples comparison and providing real CONTEXT (because it's era-adjusted) rather than comparing across eras that dont control for the patent increase in pace of play, increased possessions per game, and the INCREASED SPACING in the 2010 era that saw, this past season, an NBA RECORD for 50 point scorers and 40 point scorers. Coincidence? Teams are also shooting a higher % between 2010 and 2020 than 2000 to 2010. The rule to reset the shot clock to 14 rather than 24 ALONE has generated several more shot attempts were game and increased scoring. If you aren't going to ERA-ADJUST your numbers, I cant take you seriously. Your stats also don't tell us about Kobe playing badly injured in 08/09 and 09/10 (fractured tibia, partial tear in knee ligament, broken fingers in his shooting hand - no excuses). You're trying to pain a picture that Kobe didnt have a multiplier effect on hjis team by citing the win/loss % without the proper context. Kobe played on some BAD teams post shaq and BAD teams the final 3 years of his career something Lebron's team hopping has insulated him from. What happened when Kobe got injured in 2013? Lakers W/L record dipped precipitously and they got swept without Kobe. Tim Duncan's On/off court team win rate is poor too, does he suck? How'd Curry play without Klay in 2020? Trash. Your stats dont tell us about Kobe locking down the other perimeter players he was guarding or OUTREBOUNDING SHAQ in Game 7 (and outscoring him) in a LOW SCORING game where everybody shoot poorly (except, incidentally, Kobe); or Game 7 in 2010 when Kobe was so injured he had to get his knee drained before every quarter to relieve the swelling enough for him to play otherwise he wasnt going to be medically cleared to play). Last 5 minutes score within 5 pts--in potential clinching/clinching games in the finals 1. MJ 12-25 48% 2. LBJ 3-9 33.3% 3. Kobe 1-4 25% All finals 1 minute score within 3 points 1. MJ 9-20 45% 3. You're lucky I didnt do this for the regular season too, Lebron's even worse. And you're also lucky I didn't include Free Throw shooting in the clutch. Using game 7s like it means anything. Tatum scored 51 in game 7 vs Philly after pooping the bed in big games earlier in the series. You are cherry picking stats LMAO. 2007 Finals Lebron got OUTSCORED by Bobby Gibson. Why isnt that on your list? LMAO. 2011 Finals Lebron gout OUTSCORED by JJ Barea in key games and Jason Terry for the series and Dirk and Wade and Bosh. LMAO. 2017 and 2018 Finals where Bron stat-padded but won ONE game out of 9 to a team that took THREE losses to James freaking Harden in one series. Yall Bronsexuals make me laugh. 5 rings > 4 rings. top 4 are current players. Having shooters (3 point shooters) all over the floor, makes it easier for scorers to score. Besides that, the 3 point fiesta also improves the true shooting percent. Coaches finally understand that a 35% 3 point shot is better than a 50% 2 point shot (not taking into account fouls), so they let loose to shoot the players who shoot around 40% from three. Harden makes the cut because of his tricks to go to the free line, but his game in the playoff has proven to be ineffective. If coaches in the past knew that, players like Reggie Miller, Jeff Hornacek, John Stockton, Dalle Ellis, Glen Rice, Joe Dumars, Mark Price would have an improve legacy today. Yes but you should say effective field goal isn’t of overall shooting percentage. FG% is outdated, but eFF is the best stat to show how efficient a player is compared to their peers on all shots that don’t draw/are gifted foul calls. Bexuade of the subjectivity and CLEAR bias that we see nightly in the NBA from their refs, I definitely prefer to use eFG when judging a players efficiency putting the ball in the hole. That being said, true shooting DOES matter the most at the end of the day! Cuz FTs matter so much, but just as far as judging efficiency in a vaccuum, eFG can really tell you a lot. And that is where Kobe lags behind. He shot over 50 percent on TWOS once in his career, and had a high eFG of .504. Only 4 seasons above 50 percent eFG. Not terrible! But not great either. But for his time? Solid enough!

I believe only MJ is ahead of Kobe all time. Nobody else comes closer than Kobe.

I don’t like the disingenuous look at Kobe’s game! We talk about the Mamba mentality, but ignore it’s down falls. Mamba mentality is not based in efficiency! Kobe took long difficult 2’s that resulted in him missing the most shots in history. I don’t understand how a person can defend this as efficient scoring?

With all due respect, I dont think Kobe was inefficient........but I also dont think he was efficient. I love the dude, Im a Celtics fan and Ive hated on him in the past, rooted against him, but as Ive grown older, I have nothing but respect and admiration for him. You learn as you grow older to appreciate what you have, because when its gone youre gonig to miss those moments with all your heart. That said, Kobe wasnt exactly Steph Curry efficiency. To be efficient, taking both analytics and "eye test" into account, Kobe took a lot of shots. Taking a lot of shots is never a representative factor in someone who is "efficient" The literal meaning of the word means "achieving maximum productivity with minimum wasted effort or expense". Any time youre increasing volume with marginal increase in end product, its not efficient. Kobe shot the 2s extremely efficiently. Just under 50% for his entire career. Taking an analyitic angle to Kobe Bryant. We know now that the 2 pointer is just not efficient basketball. But were now getting into the field of understanding that taking a high percenatage 2 is better than taking a mid to low percentage 3. For example, Giannis getting high percentage looks close to the rim because of his size, dominance and X factors, and shooting at the rim at a 60+% clip is better than Giannis taking open threes at a 35% clip. Hell score more over the course of a 100 shots at those percentages with the 2s than the threes. (060x2x100=120 vs. 0.35x3x100=105). Understanding that Kobe shot a good percentage (50%) from 2s is great. But it doesnt make him efficient. It makes him average (in terms of shooting percentages). Context matters, Kobe was a guard, 50% for a big man is on the edge of not great to bad, its indicative of their ability to get good looks close in and finishing them. 50% from 2 for a guard is really good. Its what you expect and its damn near a amazing indicator of a star in the making or a really good NBA player. What you also have to factor in for Kobe is the 3 and for guards, even in the 2000s. Kobe took averaged just over 4 threes a game, he topped out at 6.5 attempts a game (2005-06) at a 34% for that season and 32% for his career. Good for mid 2000s standards, not amazing by todays standards. Yeah I know, judging him based on todays standards "isnt fair". But understanding the game grows. We always must leave an asterick when discussing players from the past because the game was just different. We can say X player excelled and put him great points and percenatages despite X, Y and Z reasons. But understanding what we know now, regardless of what the NBA landscape is like now, we can still say, players in the 90s were taking inefficient shots. By their standards and their game, no....it was just basketball.....but one of human kinds best abilities is to look back and understand why things went the way they did, and understand how to improve them going forward. That applies here too. The 3 is important, especially when youre shooting it 6.5 times a game. For context, Kevin Durant has only surpassed 6.5 attemps once in his career....and it was only by +0.2 attempts/game. Kobe also took "bad shots". Now they werent bad shots for Kobe. They went in for Kobe.....Remember, 50% from 2s for his career. But he would on a fairly regular basis, take shots that wouldnt be reccomended to take by any youth coach, any AAU coach, any College or overseas pro coach......and theyre not exactly reccomended by NBA coaches either. The difference at the NBA level though, is its literally the top of the top. Theyre the best ballers in the world. They, out of any of those NBA stepping stones, can make those shots. But theres a reason NBA coaches run plays, set picks, and do a ton of stuff to get open shots. Beause open shots are efficient. Its plain and simple. Why did we see Ray Allen or Steph Curry run through 2 picks a flare or a pin down? To get them open.......Being open matters. Taking shots with 1 or more defenders isnt efficient. For as many hand in face Kobe shots youve seen in highlights or mixtapes......there were hundreds more missed. He took them because he made them.....some of the time. Would it have been better if he shot open shots......duh. But thats what makes Kobe a legend, he took some of the toughest shots in NBA history......and made them. Again, would he have scored more if they were open......yeah....he would have. Would it have been worth the effort of the plays and sets needed to run to get him open......I dunno. But my point is this. Open shots matter. Open shots are better than defended ones. Open shots ARE efficient. I dont mean to bring Kobe down at all. My point is just that Kobe was an incredible player, he was the face of the NBA, he scored like only one man before him and that man happens to be the GOAT (arguably :p) He found amazing, creative, one of a kind ways to score, out work, out-think, and outplay his opponants for nearly 20 years. Was he "efficient".......no, was he "inefficient".......absolutely not. Efficiency is maximum productivity, with minimum effort to meet said production. Kobe wasnt efficient. Legend. Yes. Top 10 of all time. Yes. Never forgotten. Yes. Will he always live on in mine and millions of others memories....always. Theres this narrative that we put Kobe on a pedestal. He deserves to be on a pedestal. But what made Kobe great was he understoods his faults and mistakes. He made them better. He worked on himself. To sit here and say he had no faults or that his biggest criticism is a lie and it needs to be debunked is messed up. He was flawed. Everyone is. Whats wrong is people taking it and making it out to be like nothing he did mattered because he wasnt the most efficient player of all time, because he didnt make every single shot he made or because he lost in the finals or whatever people come up with. They are the problem. What doesnt help is to come back and say, no, Kobe was perfect. Kobe missed shots. He wasnt perfect. Nobody is. Anyone that takes anything away from Kobe for not being the most efficient he could have been isnt a NBA fan. But its just not fair to say that Kobes biggest criticism isnt factual. Its there. In the numbers. It teaches people that our mistakes are only mitigated, if we do great things and yell louder than the other person. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone messes up. They dont define Kobe. If you define Kobe by his missed shots, youre not an NBA fan. If you define a person by their mistakes and their mistakes alone, its not fair. Context matters. Situation matters. People matter. Im tired of everyone putting Kobe on a pedestal, like he never fucked up. Kobe is why we love Kobe. His mistakes make the man. Both sides are wrong to me. Hopefully this made sense. I know most wont read this and I know most dont really care what I have to say. But hopefully if someone does, they understand the mess I wrote and understand my point. Ultimately, if you made it this far, just remember. Whether its the NBA or in life in general. Appreciate what you have. Please. Ive lost too many things I loved, and now im stuck with haunting memories of a life that I wish I appreciated more when I had it. Root for your favourite team, or players. Root against your rivals and players you hate. But dont let that get in the way of appreciating how great some of these players are. Im a Celtics fan, but holy shit do I love watching Lebron, or Steph or Giannis. I was gunna say, I would have told my kids about those guys and how I got to see them play live but I dont think im ever going to have any. But I would have told them. Your kids might wanna hear about how Lebron dropped 45 on the Celtics in game 6 or how Giannis 50 to clinch the championship. Dont get so caught up that you miss those moments and miss a memory. Love what you have with all your heart. Because one day it might be gone.

Dude has been double to triple teamed for almost the entirety of his career and was plagued by injuries in the last 3. He played in the toughest defensive competition and was always guarded by the best perimeter defender of each team every night. Eastern conference has been a laughing stock of the league since 2000-2015 because they really don’t compare to the talent that west has. Aside from shaq, kobe never really had a superstar (yes gasol ain’t a superstar even in 08-10, there’s a difference) teammate. He was just lucky to have a cohesive team in 08-10 run but nothing too special. And as the narrator said, when watching kobe live (and not just blindly reading stats) you would rarely feel that he was inefficient as he always takes over games specially when they are close and nearing the end. I can go on forever about this but the disrespect he’s getting from this young generation who is witnessing bloated stats because of 3s and shitty ass defense from the modern league has to stop. Know your history.
