The dad is a veteran too but he didn't go through what Tristan went through (Samuel). If you haven't already, search for the deleted scenes from the film. It's about Tristan after the war.
@NoUnknown-y5p
@NoUnknown-y5p 8 ай бұрын
It wasn’t the war, Onestab raised him to be a warrior. If you notice in the war scenes, he didn’t struggle at all. Tristan is broken bc he couldn’t save Samuel. Guilt is the bear he is struggling with inside. His perceived failure. He mentions this several times. “I couldn’t bring Samuel back either could I?”- to his father “I couldn’t save him” -to Susannah (“Samuel’s dead”) “That’s my fault.” That is why Col Ludlow says “Samuel chose to be a soldier and soldiers die.” To remind him it’s not his fault. Tristan’s reaction is also from someone disrespecting Onstab. He’s not going to tolerate that, war or no war. Next to Samuel, Onestab is his closest family. They share a deep bond.

What Tristan saw in that grizzly bear was a true animal spirit. He didn't lose his nerve nor was his warrior prowess dimmed. For Tristan probably felt a deeper connection with that wild animal, as both were of the wilderness, free to roam untrammeled & powerfully territorial. Nor was Tristan's inherent alpha male pride affected or threatened by that lumbering fearsome beast, as in ways Tristan saw himself or at least aspects of his genuine nature in that bear...viscerally & spiritually. He felt a deeper connection, both primal & mystical. That grizzly was his spirit animal, literally!

@@PwnyDwn Our experiences shape our perceptions. And yours is certainly a profound, defining, one. Fully agree, there is, definitely, some PTSD in Tristan´s reaction, but I think that there is also integrity, regardless of how hurt he can be. I see that integrity in your honesty too. Thanks for sharing this with me. By the way, I have a lot of respect for people who are willing to carry out that sort of sacrifice for what they believe is right. I can not emulate your combat experience but I know that good people get hurt, sometimes badly. And even in those darkest moments they manage to find the light. Probably your experiences are not going to go away, but by sharing them, you´ll find a way out. Wish you the best of lucks.

@@andreselectrico I appreciate the good vibes and the pleasant reply. That's rare on the Internet now days. Tristan reacted here in a way very much the way I would myself. One of the issues I gained after my second deployment was just a raw lack of patience with hateful or toxic people like this bar tender here. Blind hate or racism or just ill will towards my friends or loved ones now days tends to send me straight into a fit of rage. I was recently detained by local police for clobbering someone at the gas station. The officer happened to have served in the same unit as me and let me go, and even the person I hit apologized. I could be more sorry because the poor guy didn't deserve that level of response but I couldn't help it. You really do see hear and feel things very differently once you've had certain experiences. Thanks again for the kind words and insights.

@@PwnyDwn Your´re very welcome brother. I feel you. I know that sort of toxic behavior very well, which is the reason why I respect Tristan´s reaction. And believe me, blind hate, ill will or racism fully justify rage. We just need to channel it properly. I found guitar playing and some martial arts, but it could be writing, acting, reading philosophy, speaking out against injustice publicly, helping the community, teaching your skills to others so they can deal with toxic assholes, and so on. We need to let our hurt to turn into love for our fellow human beings. Even the toxic ones, after defeating them with punching poetry, we should turn them into friends (the very definition of victory: making a friend of an enemy). The time for justice is always been now; fighting for it in the proper way is healing and will save the world. Be well my friend.

This is a great movie, which I love so much, particularly this scene. I watched it for first time when I was barely a teenager, and have repeated it many times since, particularly this scene. There are many well acted and very telling scenes in this movie (Tristan crying in the grave of his brother for instance), but this one evokes in me strong emotions. Tristan has become a man of deed and honor, and his father discovers this in this scene, which partially surprises him (he was his little boy after all) but nonetheless acknowledges with some admiration...and even some degree of healthy, prideful, fear. What can I say of the acting. Sir Hopkins as great as always, and Brat Pitt displaying this great ability of him to explore righteous anger. In my view Mr. Pitt, the actor and the person, represents, together with other great people, what I would call American white manhood at its best.

Great scene. I've seen a small part of this movie, where Brad Pitts woman gets tragically killed......would love to watch the rest but that scene is too sad.

I wish they would make more movies like this but sadly these fine actors are aging out and Hollywood doesn't seem to care. They just want to make Marvel type movies with all CGI and diversity hires.

Looking through the comments I'm astounded at how everyone seemed to miss the point of this scene entirely. If Tristan had had his way the bartender would've probably killed him and it wasn't until his father and the bartender had come to an understanding to serve One Stab and had his back turned to him that Tristan attacked him. Did no one see how disappointed One Stab was in Tristan? The bartender was only doing as he was told, he said it himself "there now, it's the owner he sais he doesn't want to serve indians" so Tristan attacking him was only self gratification not attacking the problem itself. Tristan wasn't his fathers "favorite" the reason it seems that way is because Tristan is the problem child he was selfish, impulsive, temperamental, he got his brother killed in the war and never thought things through his father loved his child and knew he needed the extra care.

Actually the father was protecting tristian from killing the bartender and causing more problems for himself. Tristan was an emotional hot head, but he was tough. He killed all those Germans in WW1 and got revenge on the corrupt people who killed his wife later in the movie. “Tristan was a rock they broke themselves against” One stab says this in the end that he was wrong about Tristan living to be an old man.

Tristan was his favorite. he saw himself in Tristan and tried to protect him and give him a calm life. Tristan was his father's son and had too much fire in his soul for peace. his disappointment in this scene was from seeing how broken Tristan had become and knowing the path he was now on. he saw his own pain and torment in his sons' eyes.
