LEGENDS OF THE OLD WEST presented by Black Barrel Media. In 1883 in Taney County, Missouri, a murder case ends with an apparent lack of justice, and Nathaniel Kinney decides to take matters into his own hands. He forms a vigilance committee - nicknamed the Baldknobbers - whose goal is to punish criminals who escape the law. The vigilantes strike their first blow, but their seemingly righteous mission quickly turns to a campaign of harassment that spreads fear throughout Taney County.

Another excellent piece. I had heard their name before but, I did not know anything about the baldknobbers before now. I always enjoy learning new things about our nation’s history. It is a necessary service you provide. Thank you.

Things can still be nuts in that county. Check out the movie "Winter's Bone" for how it is now, it was filmed in Taney but is set in Christian. Edit: the Osage tribe burned the hills every year to drive game. When the white settlers came in, there was not much forest. Arkansas has a town Bald Knob. Guess the treeless hills looked knobby.

Since I moved to Missouri bout 20 years ago, I have heard a bit about the Bald Knobbers, but this offering is far more detailed! There is a city called Knob Noster (Our Knob ((Noster translated from Latin)) ) which is very close to Whiteman Air Force Base, and located right there is a bar named The Rat Hole. Since I have been by there a few times, I noticed that there were a few American-made motorcycles parked outside The Rat Hole once in a while, and a couple of times a 'rat' Harley Davidson, also. Anyway, the State of Missouri seems to really like to name different places Knob, Knob This, or Knob That, if you catch my drift.

@@swhip897 While I was in junior high school, a teacher who was teaching about the pre-second world war time in history suggested that suppose she was working in an automobile factory, and her job was screwing doorknobs onto car doors. Being Mr. Smarty-pants, I replied with, "Screwing doorknobs onto cars? Really???" And the new word that could be used to replace certain swear words was born. The first usage that I can remember was me, saying, "Go knob yourself," said to a classmate later that day. This was in the junior high that I attended in Los Angeles, in 1967. I did feel kind of bad after I said that to her, seeing as she was young, pretty, and the kindest teacher that I ever did come across, bar none. Being the class's clown, I couldn't resist, though.

I went on to becoming a Marine, and before I retired, I was a Drill Instructor on MCRD Parris Island, SC. My instilled bit of acerbic humor was perfect for the job!

@@swhip897 Back in the day, during the year of 1963, during my 4th grade year in a grammar school in Los Angeles, my teacher, while teaching about the industrial period said something about supposing that she was working in the automobile industry, screwing doorknobs onto cars. Being the class clown, I interjected with, "Screwing doorknobs onto cars? Really?" Later that day, I told a classmate to, "Go knob yourself," and the use of the word knob for various swear words was born! This was my contribution of the new use of a word in the English vocabulary!
