I was shook by Derek's description of the cabin boy's hydrophobia. My mind jumped right to late-stage rabies and my stomach just dropped. I just kept saying, "no no no...they don't know." I was really hoping it would just be a magical ailment but when Detect Magic showed nothing!!! Ugh, my heart sank. Your descriptions are so visceral, I hate them so much I love them!

Yeah, I was thinking rabies since he's unable to drink water or broth. Then he started talking about eating people, and it started making me think of him or the other guy turning into a wendigo, since he was eating himself, starving, and unable to bring himself to eat normal food, the broth.

The name of the ship rang a few bells, and looking it up it plays on the word 'moribund' meaning 'at the point of death' which feels like a amazingly grim piece of foreshadowing for the crew. Derek and Co you have done an incredible job building this brutal world and campaign!

*Spoilers for those before the combat * How I interpret Stonebridge's comments about the caribou. Posting cause until spending a long time mulling it over, i wasnt fully sure I understood everything he said. Feel free to add comments or other interpretations. Some of the crew, after several failed hunts and days/weeks of starvation, plot to kill and eat the rest of the crew, and disguise it from the others as the victims "dying during the hunt". So the core schemers go on a hunt, taking someone not in-the-know out with them. They ambush them after wandering far enough. I want to believe that, at least the first few times they butchered the carcass out in the field so that others wouldnt know it was human meat, justifying it as "only carrying the meat so they dont have to carry extra weight". Poor Stonebridge probably never thinks to question the adults dropping food in front of him. Once the crew has a taste for human flesh, they contract the wendigo curse. A rabies-like disease where all they can eat is human flesh, and they are slowly, imperceptibly at first, irreversibly turning wendigo. The core cannibals continue their plot, perhaps some crew never knowing the truth of the "caribou meat", perhaps some chose willful ignorance. And day after day, the cannibal crew's numbers dwindle as they sacrifice crew mates to fill their stomachs. Stonebridge sees an actual caribou, probably for the first time, being a young boy from a temperate city after all. Probably hearing from the hunting party about how deadly these caribou are (as thats the alibi for missing crew), he believes they are vicious. That is why Stonebridge comments about how suprised he is to see the caribou is just a timid fearful animal. When the crew kills it, im sure the ones in-the-know are happy for an easy meal, and those not in the know are suprised that they took it down so easily. But when they try to taste the caribou, it tastes like poison. For once they eat human flesh, and contract the wendigo disease/curse, all other food induces a rabies-like response (hence why Stonebridge couldnt eat the soup before). Thats when Stonebridge realizes something is wrong, and they have not been eating caribou the whole time. The puzzle pieces fit in. Soon, realizing that he is the next to go (im the next "caribou"), he runs. But consumed by wendigo curse, he cannot eat anything. In his unsatiatable hunger, he begins to eat himself, the only human flesh he can get. He finds his old mentors Barnabos, Queenie and crew, cannot stomach normal food, and succumbs to the curse that he unwittingly contracted by trusting those who should have cared for him. Hopefully when he passed, he lost conciousness and sentience, and the undead that took his body did not have lingering traces of Stonebridge. I hope he rested in peace. Sorry for the long post. Its a really well written story, Derek. Love the campaign.

It’s definitely different and I feel bad for Derek because queenie makes insane decisions for the story. If it was more laid back and playful yeah but getting stabbed to hug someone you don’t know? That’s insane especially if that damage didn’t come off fast and they decided to attack or the nirvana dude came in and ended up fighting them.

​@sleepyproduction7166 I wouldn't say that Queenie's decisions make the story any harder to run at all. At the base of Derek's prep, nothing is so set to go one way. As a DM you can always try to predict what your players will do, but odds are you'll never guess exactly how any situation is going to go. From watching some Avantris and Chill episodes, it seems like the way he's set up this story is a series of "if this, then that: if that, then this:, etc... Mostly based on whether certain events take place or what happens during those events. This episode is a big example of this too, they could've saved Daisy and as he said in this eps A&C, the entire point of this combat was to see if they could save her. Because what ultimately mattered to the story as a whole was whether or not Daisy made it out of this fight alive. If we take this back to the kobolds, there's a world where they try to kill them, or steal from them, or fail persuading them, or just anything. He's prepared for it because in the grand scheme of things, is it doesn't matter so much what decisions your players make in the moment, what matters is what comes of it. I'd also like to say, Queenie in general, while annoying to you, is generally a flawed character, who, in nature, on occasion, does stupid things because she sees the world differently. She would be nothing without her heart, and that's the core of who she is. And sometimes that leads to others trying to plant a knife in it lmao.

I was hoping the entire time after the smooth obelisk that stonebridge would survive, at first i thought that he did if not a little starved and wounded. But then when he stopped breathing in queenies lap and his body started creeking I knew he was not coming back. Then the Bendigo started piercing through his body and face, I was horrifically glued to what was happening. And i remembered the caribu (idk how to spell it) that tasted like poison and I thought back to when I was researching about wendigo' s and its effects, I started slowly piecing together the picture, and in absolute sadness, terror and disgust I heard the description. Good job, I hate you Derek, but good story telling. I will never see morning frost the same

Hats off to Derek's foreshadowing for the Windago. Maybe my new favourite setup for an encounter. In my sick twisted DM mind the caribou that the cabin boy helped kill and cook was a Windago, explaining the poisoned meat, his feverish behaviour and foreshadowing his own transformation. So cool

When he's describing him unable to eat or drink its not Rabies as a person could technically still eat. I think all of the men started hallucinating that others of the crew were Caribou but they started eating each other and when they had actually caught a real Caribou the meat tasted poison to them. Those poor men and that boy were ghoulifying, in the frozen places ghoulification can happen even while a person is still living as signified by seisures and shakes and the horrifying realization subconsciously of what is happening to themselves also he was described as gaunt while yes this can happen irl you're more likely to freeze first before you're as Gaunt as Derek described

Derek's description of immediately after trauma is so good its bringing tears to my eyes. Feeling already dead, like you're in a dream, sick, hollow. I have obviously nothing near the severity of that experience but it's still chilling recognizing the feelings.

I thought he was experiencing some kind of fear where if he drank water or ate his body he would go into system shock. but the second I heard about the land getting rid of cannibalism i realized it was a wendigo. As soon as he started talking about eating flash and when everyone was talking about the land was sorted out because of my heritage first thing that came through my head was Wendigo and then when he starts talking about the white of the hair and the stretching of the skin my fears started to be ever higher and it actually start freaking me out so much that I'm tearing up right now I've heard stories passed out through my family of harsh Winters and in certain tribes that my family hills from if they didn't think they could go on they were walking to the snowy mountains in the middle of winter so that no others would feast upon them and become the creature that hunts humans and how in some tribes they would eat each other and no matter how much they eat they never seem to get nourished they seem to almost change to monsters of the shape of man

Cook Hell being the back of a Golden Corral is pretty legit. I worked at a Child Development center directly next to a Golden Corral for 10 years. (I ate there a a couple times...the last time I ate there I got pretty horrific food poisoning, refused to set foot in a golden corral ever again) When I'd take the kids out to the playground , I could see over the fence ... dead rats.... and the smell of the grease trap just made me physically sick. I was overjoyed when I couldn't take the kids outside, lol. luckily they tore the entire place down last year, and built a big bank there.

At first I thought the Cabin boy was turning into a ghoul, but then I remembered this terrible (I thought the book sucked) book I read for my summer reading (can't remember what it was called) and I was like "oh crap he's making him turn into a Wendigo." I feel so bad .__. that poor boy didn't deserve that at all. He tried so hard too! I'm not done with the episode, but I hope Barnabos avenges him properly! FUCK Yes! When I heard Derek make the noise for the wendigo, it was genuinely chilling. I was afraid that through this entire thing, they wouldn't mention The Terror or a Wendigo, and I couldn't help but smile as I heard him describing the cursed creature in its most grotesque form. This reminds me of two stories, one of the andies mountain disaster, where i think i recall them saying human flesh tastes sweet, and they were in the mountains with absolutely no food source, but they never restored to killing others for food. And the other im reminded of is the Chinese squid boat where out of the whole 36 or so crew only 11 made it back to china, and it turned out the crew had a mutiny and the different groups ended up hunting eachother for sport. Both true stories that happened within the last 50 or so years, it really felt like Derek researched alot about canabolism before making this story, this was very well done, thank you for the bone chilling story!

An interesting thing for the warlock since he's a goblin and can run through spaces that have creatures in them that are bigger than him there is a trait that you can get I can't remember what it's called at the moment but it allows your eldred blast to put more force behind it actually moving enemies run underneath an enemy should an elder blast throw them 20 feet in the air move out of the way with your last movement action and watch them fall and take extra damage then they are prone and everyone gets advantage on them

Wendigos are the cryptid/monster that legitimately scares me more than any other. The concept of cannibalism, especially in a survivalist scenario, is genuinely terrifying. I cannot describe in words how much it disturbs me. As soon as Stonebridge turned up, described as he was, I knew what had happened to him and I had a decent inkling of what was about to happen. And yet I was frozen, paralyzed with fear, hoping desperately that he would be able to somehow avoid or undo the effects of what he'd done. That poor boy had no idea. He didn't choose to commit such atrocities. He didn't deserve such a horrible fate. I don't think I'll be able to sleep well tonight...

I was excited that Derek was depicting the actual appearance of the wendigo as in native culture, and then described the caribou skull coming out. I'm a little disappointed, but I guess D&D uses the modern version of it? Not sure, pretty new to d&d in general. The video game Until Dawn actually has a more accurate depiction of them, gaunt, skeletal, white hair, sharp teeth. They grow larger every meal too, so they can be giants. Although to be perfectly accurate the wendigo is an invisible spirit that possesses people, who look like starving frozen giants. Modern depictions of the wendigo actually more closely resembles an Inuit creature know as a ijiraq or possibly the tariaksuq. Fun fact for the day! But seriously, great work on the descriptions. truly visceral and horrific. Also the dead things jumping to life reminds me of cursed air in dwarf fortress. lmao.

With the descriptions of The Certain Thing That Happens, I recommend looking up The Unknown's Lobby Animation from Dead by Daylight, there's quite a bit of similarity to it that I was imagining - fantastic work everyone as always 💜
