That was a bad ass movie. I remembering watching it for the first time in Argentina by 1980-81

Their were also Legionnaires using the Lewis gun in "Legionnaire" (1998) with Jean Claude Van Damme. Both movies are set in the Rif War of the 1920s in Morocco which had the Spanish and the French team up to fight Abd el Krim. Osprey's MAA 325 French Foreign Legion 1914 - 45 however does not make any mention of use of Lewis guns; just the Hochkiss and the Chuciat.

The Legion forever! The blood of heroes in the desert never dries, always forever alive in honor!
@rudolfkraffzick6423 жыл бұрын
Who are the heroes? Well, the Legionaires risked and gave their lives. But it took even more courage for the poorly equipped Touaregs to attack them. More Glory for them! And they fought for the better case: Liberation from colonialism.

I'm not sure if he would have burned his hands off. I'm sure that it would have been pretty hot, but not burning, the large barrel of the Lewis Gun is mostly protecting the cooling fins that come off of the actual barrel. Also, I think they're using the sandbags as a 1st line of defense so they can fall back to another...

Hackman played a major. Since the officer was not born in France, captain would be the highest rank.
@teller12903 жыл бұрын
People get that wrong, as I used to. You can go beyond captain regardless of nation of birth IF you've been able to take advantage of Legion's French citizenship offer. So, if you're born in Italy, serve in the Legion for 5+ yrs and end up with French citizenship in eight years (five-yr thing not automatic any more, I read), this foreign born Legionnaire can then theoretically advance beyond captain
@paladinsix92853 жыл бұрын
The beginning of the movie is set at the end of the "Great War" (World War One). Some Foreign born officers were promoted beyond Captain, and I don't believe all of them had become French citizens.

it's amazing film, but complete wrong about the uniforms, on the firtst movie scene they use blue coats and red kepis, at this time they were kahki with adrian hemet. On the desert war they were khaki uniform, klike the JCVD movie Legionarie.

+Carlos de Lima I have a couple of books on the Legion, and they show the uniforms of the Rif War as essentially the same as those worn during WW1, which varied only slightly from the classic Beau Geste uniform.

Perhaps the promise of rewards in the afterlife has allowed powerful leaders to lead good men to die for too long. Can any man promise what is to come after death when he himself only believes and does not know? To accept death and fight for the promise of eternal rewards is to accept an assumption. Would any god reward war waged for the power of men over other men? War serves organized religion, yes, but not god. No man has or can know god until he meets him.

hehe, dam the MG08 is the gun that have killed most people in history. In ww2, 600000 soliders were killed just because of that gun. You see its horrible effectivness in this movie. The french m1914 is also good but can only fire short becuase of the low mag (30rds)
