With the low accuracy and rate / high scattering of fire of weapons in those times, they _had_ to march in such dense and multi-rank formations in order to attain at least somewhat decent fire efficiency. They were no fools, it was really the most effective mode of warfare given the quality of the weaponry. It would change as soon as guns got more accurate and fire rate increased.

Line battles were a weird thing, you had to stand in place when people were shooting at your regiment, you couldn't even try to dodge the shot, you just stood there.

Well armies had to maximise the firepower and the best way to do that was in line formation. and it was much higher chance of hiting someone considering the low accuracy of the guns at that time. Then veteran soldiers with a ”crazy” belif in their king and god plus very high morale made soldiers march in lines like this

odds of death in the early phases of battle were actually low, unless cannons were involved, or retreating. It was weird because in formation one was immune to cavalry, and could mass firepower. But at the same time, it was vulnerable to artillery. Most of the dying tended to happen after the battle became a melee.

You fired at about 100 yards, and didn't get any closer until you thought the other side made a huge mistake, then you charge bayonets. Now, why didn't they lie down? Look at the length of the musket. It is long. You can possibly load it lying down, but it would take a long time. Standing up you can load and fire every 15 seconds, laying down maybe a minute. In that one minute time, as you laid on the ground, the enemy would run across that 100 yards and stab you to death with his bayonet.

its insane what soldiers of the colonial days did. hell even in the more recent past 100years. I do historical battle reenactments focusing on US civil war. and have "charged" a full cannon battery of 8 rifles that fire between 12 and 20lb balls (no real balls or i wouldnt be here now) loaded with only a powder charge. they went off with us about 150ft away. they also had infantry support. we knew the moment we were doomed. its an intense feeling knowing that this was a moment that some young man my age knew he was going to die.

​@@Irish_PirateYou're totally wrong. A 18th century's musket's range was about 50-60 meters with extremely low accuracy. Let's say that your line fired the guns at 91 meters, which is 100 yards. Approximately 90% of the bullets would miss the target line due to low range and accuracy. The swedes used a unique way to measure the distance. They marched until they saw the white in their enemies' eyes. It could be between 15 and 30 meters, I couldn't find any source to approve this tho. You couldn't reload your musket in only 15 seconds. You had to wait at least 45 secs to fire a second volley. Also how could they have just lied down and fired? They didn't have access to modern rifles and if they had ignored the fact and lied down, their enemies would've charged with bayonets. The lying soldiers couldn't have had enough time to get ready for melee

In the Russian language there is such an expression "like a Swede near Poltava", meaning a complete, total defeat, without hope of salvation. The Swedish army at that time was the best in Europe. Brave soldiers. Peter 1 made his army better and became emperor. The Polish king was supposed to be an ally of Russia, but betrayed the ally. Перед эти сражением, русские солдаты ветераны поменялись своими потёртыми мундирами с молодыми не опытными новобранцами и сказали что бы они не опозорили их мундиры. Новобранцы сдержали своё слово и нанесли сокрушительный удар по шведам. А ветераны выдержали первый и самый мощный удар шведов и не бежали, а удар этот предназначался новеньким мундирам, так решил Карл. Вот такая русская военная хитрость.

I felt so bad about the millions of wasted lifes in WW I that I could not read beyond the German campaign in Belgium. At last in the olden times the responsible led from the front.

It wasn't originally a bad tactic during the battle, the Swedish line almost broke the Russian line and almost inflicted a decisive defeat. The tactic was to scare the enemy line into retreating. The issue was Stall in the middle. For some reason an order was given to stop the advance, this lost the Swedish momentum and the Russians regrouped and with their superior number won the battle. This was usually a superb tactic around this time, as time went one more accurate muskets and later rifle made the tactic obsolete.

Columns are good vs Infantry , infantry only shoots bullets , rarely they penetrate 2 persons, but in a column with only 3 mens at front only those 3 men can die to shoots of the front, in the film you can see that the swedish go in lines to evade art , but they put the artillery as explosions in the earth , and then they put the swedish failing more shoots than the russians , just to charge, that's a bit wrong , the cavalry didn't charged to the front of units of bayonets, they did to the flanks and back but not the front. The swedish thought that with their veteran troops and their morale they would win even in numerical disadvantage , when the swedish attacked they had an initial advantage but the Tsar used the numerical advantage and deployed more troops in the center , when the swedish tried to attack their attack wasn't sucessful , and soon the problems to comunicate and some disorder converted in chaos ,soon the flanks and back of the swedish were attacked and conducted to the center , meanwhile the russian cavalry attacked from the back and destroyed the Swedish , Charles XII ( Carolus ) retired with a few officers and crossed the river Prut to go to the Ottoman Empire looking for protection. The Swedish soldiers were put to build Saint Petersburg and Carolus kept 5 years in the Ottoman Empire.

Не позавидуеш тем, кто стоял в первом ряду.. Реальные смертники. Интересно по какому принципу проходила укоплектование? Жребий тянули - кому в первый ряд? Тут еще надо понимать, что нужно было стоять и не рыпаться.. Так шансы выжить были больше.. Если труханеш, то и сам здохнеш и те, кто за тобой.. То есть в такой стратегии многое решал характер.. Твердость духа.. Тут решало количество и дисциплина.. Стратегия третьим шла..

Посмотри какое количество смертей было в боях 18 века, ты удивишься, но довольно небольшое. Вообще 18 век особенно середина считается самым гуманным периодом в истории. @ла испанец так это я и не исключаю.. Я к тому, что стратегия в таком порядке да в общем то и умения не сильно решали. Больше рандом.. Дисциплина и количество войск могли только уменьшить смертность. ---- Такие порядки вот только весьма эффективны против аборигенов.. Что англичане и французы с успехом и использовали в Африке.. Кавалерию и пехоту вооруженную саблями выкашивали только так. Да в общем и вооруженные огнестрелом в рассеяном порядке не могли противостоять такой организации Построение шеренгами дает возможность вести практически непрерывный огонь. Пока один ряд перезаряжает - стреляет 2-й за ним. А был еще и третий..

@@am97734 Нельзя им было находится в другом месте потому что строй очень легко было разрушить, солдаты довольно часто бежали. Поэтому, что бы избежать паники офицеры и были вместе с солдатами. Именно от ружейного огня умирало мало, основной ущерб наносила артиллерия.

Хоть русские и превосходили шведов численностью в 2 раза, но битву выиграли меньшинством. Петр построил армию в 4 линии, но привести в действие успел только первую - шведы побежали, и три линии так и не были задействованы. В те времена, как и позже, в мире не было равных русскому солдату в штыковом бою.

Никаким меньшинством он не выигрывал.Приведя под Полтаву корпус в 60000 человек,Петр 1 оставил в лагере 26000 резерва,итого на поле было 34000 человек,армия Карла XII перед битвой насчитывала около 17000 солдат.Около 8000 было оставлено под стенами Полтавы.Не стоит забывать про то,что 1/3 шведских солдат была выведена из сражения при пересечении редутов,когда корпус генерала Рооса был уничтожен Меньшиковым.При этом у шведов было 4 орудия,не хватало пороха,солдаты были деморализованы.

At 32 seconds a cannon ball appears to blow up (explode) ….cannon balls didn’t do that …at Waterloo in 1815 a 12 pounder French cannon ball ripped through British lines killing17 men in a Row …also they traveled far slower than artillery shells and you could virtually see them in flight especially after hitting the ground….other than that it looks like a historically accurate battle scene….

Apart from the music (wich is made by Sabaton, so it's obviously amizing) the movie (The Sovereign's Servant) is a terrible representation of 18th century warfare. The soldiers beigin to fire at what looks like 20 meters, while firefights usually started at somewhere from 200 to 300 meters, when a side is shooting the other is just standing still and the soldiers don't even look when they shoot! Also they fire a single volley and then just charge at eachother with no order or coordination; this is a horrible representation of the swedish tactic of the early 18th century called "Gå på" (litterally "go forward), in eich the swedish soldier would advance at around 50 meters where the first rank would unleash a first devastating volley, then they would advance at around 25 meters, the second and third rank would fire an even more devastating volley, and in the the end they would draw rapiers, bayonets or pikes (wich ⅓ of the swedish infantry was armed with) and charge. This tactic required a lot of coordination, training and good momentum (even in the melee), because while they were advancing the enemy wasn't just standing there, but they were actively shooting at them. If you want to learn more I suggest Brandon F.'s video "The Caroleans: The strenghts and weaknesses of the Gå på" and his video series "Why did soldiers fight in lines?"
