This game made me feel some type of way. I lost my aunt back in 2016 to breast cancer, she was a beautiful and selfless woman. She loved her family so much, so it was hard for us. The one who felt the most pain was my mother (my aunt was the oldest of 5 siblings, while my mom was the second eldest), my aunt basically had to take on a parent role when my grandparents separated. Seeing my mom cry was so heartbreaking, I never saw her in this kind of pain before. Me and my dad could feel all that grief from her. My aunt was also like a second mother to me, I wanted to be a strong and successful woman like her. My depression worsened; I never felt good enough. I became empty. I could never do anything for my family, I felt worthless. I used to wish I died in her place. 2020, I am now in a better place in my life. The story of these game is so beautiful. It didn't need words to convey its story. I'm sorry if my comment was too long, I just wanted to post this. Please know, you are loved. I may not know who you are and I don't know how to make you feel better, but please continue living your life for the people you love.

the meaning and message the game has to reflect on emotions that we felt through our own experience is mind blowing. Many of us in the comments have shared moments like the one you shared and I can relate as I also lost my aunt to stomach cancer last year. She acted as a second mother to me and my siblings and helped us out when my parents had to work when we were little. Never liked seeing my mom cry either or family members passing away. All we can do is be there together for those final moments and let it be a reminder that time is precious. To never forget and to keep on living the best we can. Glad to hear you’re in a better place and for sharing your story. May our aunts rest in peace.

Her mother is not the one who has died, its Gris herself. In the beginning you can see when Gris stops singing, the statue stars to crumble and when she completely falls, the statue falls into pieces, meaning the loss of her child completely destroyed her. Now as a memory of Gris in her mother's mind, you start to rebuild her again and as you pass the stages you're also making your way for your final ascension meaning that with overcoming each stage, her mother gets closer to acceptance and letting her go. You can also see the black monster which is the mother's grief has the shape of her daughter because it was her death that caused this grief .at the end the mother accepts her daughter's death and after shedding a tear and saying goodbye, she finally lets Gris go and she finally ascends to the sky. Also, if you pay attention to the statues on your way, you can see that they are all crying women, demonstrating her mothers mourning.

As the game doesn't explicitly tell its story, it's small-minded to assume there is only one interpretation. The purpose of a game like this is that it elicits strong emotion from the player and the player then links that emotion to their own personal journey IRL. Super not cool for you to forcibly try and boil that down to your own subjective interpretation and claim it's the 'right' one.
@Labyrythm2 жыл бұрын
@@victoriousf.i.g.3311 agreed.
@introvert96732 жыл бұрын
That was good but the game itself has no dialogue and the developers said that it's better that way because it will help the players think of their own story interpretation, like what I think and yes I do not claim that my story interpretation was the actual story in game or Gris's journey. I hope you watch how the developers made the game Gris because that'll make you understand the game more.

I was a bit disappointed with the secret scene because it shattered my interpretation of the game. My original interpretation was that Gris was simply trying to heal herself, regain her lost self-love and return the colors back to her life. I really like my interpretation because of how abstract and applicable to any (not just a mother's death) life's situation it is. But after the initial shock I don't think the game lost too much depth with the secret scene and actually helped me to formulate an even more interesting interpretation. Sometimes when a person loses a loved one they feel not just sadness but also anger towards the departed who left them aching and alone in the world. This is the anger which shatters the mother-statue. And it ties into the secret scene because the statue is frozen in the same pose as in the secret scene. The secret scene might be the defining moment in the relationship of Gris and her mother, the moment of perfect togetherness, of sharing everything in the world, even the stars, of perfect safety. This togetherness, this safety is shattered by the mother's death and Gris is left alone in the world, aching. Suddenly an anger takes hold of her, anger towards her departed mother and towards her own helplessness symbolized by the sandstorms knocking her back after every few steps. Then she goes through the rest of the five stages of grief - bargaining, depression and finally acceptance - repairing a bit of memory of her mother and her own self with each step. In the last stage, Gris finally comes to terms with her mother's departure, and her mother is no longer frozen in a moment of terror but becomes a living, breathing and beautifully colorful memory which Gris will keep cherishing as she finally moves on and rises back from the depths of depression and pain into the world.

What I adore so much about this game is that there are so many interpretations that can come from this beautiful piece of art. I went in blind and almost immediately viewed it from the lens of someone with mental illness, particularly the constant fight with depression. Her acceptance of it being a part of her but learning to live with it at the end brought me to tears, and though I later found out the developers' original intent to be the story of grief and subsequently saw it from that lens in my second playthrough, it made my first interpretation no less meaningful or special to me. I told my cousin about this game and he came away with a completely different interpretation regarding Gaia/Mother Earth and it fit just as well. This game is truly a masterpiece.

A beautiful game! Everything about it is beautiful: the story, the music, the art direction, literally everything. And that ending hit me in the feels. I do think it's a story about a girl, Gris, going through the various stages of grieving over the loss of her mother. And my interpretation of Gris and the crumbling statute: the statute is a representation of the state the mother and the daughter are in. They're both in pieces over one another. (The mother is suffering because the daughter is suffering .) The statue piecing back together after completion of every stage (of grieving) should be self-explanatory. And the statue shedding a tear at the end I don't think it's a tear of sadness but a tear of joy. Also 16:37 stupid eel! Freaked the heck outta me on my first playthrough.

I couldn’t agree more! I like the fact that everyone who has played it can take away something important from the game and express how they interpret it. At the same time resonate with it as the player continues her journey together. From the art style, gameplay, and music it’s truly a wonderful game. I still listen to the music on my phone whenever i’m chilling or working. Helps to relax and yes the EEL made me jump i was not expecting it. I was like “damn it they got me” haha

Nice theory though developers already released their actual interpretation of the game being the symbiotic relationship between a mother and daughter, loss/depression/discovery/growing/maturing. I believe it’s Gris who has passed away. After the mother looses her daughter, she’s not able to live her life because she’s paralyzed with grief. Like a statue. Gris’ spirit is trying to help her mother piece herself back together by assisting her through the 5 stages of grief. Once she succeeds with this, her mother can finally let her go. I feel that’s what the last scene of Gris going up and into the light means. Her mother can finally let her daughter’s spirit go and rest in piece. Just my opinion though.
@cicianamumu2 жыл бұрын
I can't believe it, I think you're right. I played this game some time ago and never came upon this interpretation, but this fills a lot of holes in the "Gris died" theory. Incredible.
@thunderbolt3204 жыл бұрын
can't understand how people think it's something else in this story lol if you take individual parts might do but if you take them all it's just way too obvious it's about her mother that died, and the different statues of her mother sad is how her mother feels knowing her daughter can't go on and she can't help her to go on. it's up to gris to manage it, and the ending is her mother proud that she will now manage to go on and accept the situation. 15/10 for music, graphics art and story, 6/10 for story presentation and gameplay

@MagikanVearlae4 жыл бұрын
I know I'm late to responding to your comment but I wanted to offer up my thoughts. For me the secret ending added more, as if it were a prequel scene. Memories of which are scattered throughout the game. 1. You have the giant moon that you get a glimpses of during exploration after triggering RED. 2. You have the shooting stars that feature throughout the game (and later on in the scene the dance twirl Gris does the first time you find one in the game.) 3. You have the mother collecting one of the stars and when she opens her hands to reveal the star, the hands are in the exact same position as the statue hands when you trigger the GREEN scene. 4. The mother then shows off the star with one hand and her face is showing in that scene. This mimics the statue poses during BLUE, YELLOW and the ending scene. To further add to the memory side of things during GREEN, BLUE and YELLOW when we see the statue, parts of it are shown as if building structures are within it and not quite a whole statue until pieced back together at the end. That's what I took out of the secret ending and whilst I'm not looking to sway your opinion, I hope the pieces of repeated imagery I have pointed out help it be a little less disappointing for you.
