Now that I think of it, I have a question for you : what are the Devils' view of the use of Undead? I don't see such a vicious and sadistic "race" having qualms about getting the most use out of their resources through Necromancy. I just don't recall having seen a non-homebrew Necromancy-using Baatezu yet. It's the kind of thing that feels almost expected of them.

Say AJ, ever consider doing a video on how bardic magic works in d&d? I find it to be one of the more difficult types of magic to explain to new players from an in universe vantage point.
@Harrowed2TheMind9 ай бұрын
I personally like to see it not as the typically described "magic of music" or even of performance, since bard types can vary from singers and musicians to actors, visual artists and even archivists. Since oral tradition was the best way to preserve knowledge before writing became prevalent, I see the bard's music as the "power of Knowledge", in a way. Bards are typically well-traveled and learn their craft from many cultures and traditions, which is why they seem are able to cast magic that is generally perceived as arcane, yet they can also manifest quite a bit of magicks that are usually limited to divine spellcasters (such as healing spells), as well as apparently a smattering of other sources of magic as well (natural magic, the occult, truenaming, etc.). Bardic Knowledge/Lore used to be one of the core abilities of the class for a reason, in my view.

A lot of this depends on how you view the Hells. Devils don’t eat. Devils don’t sleep. Devils don’t have time off. Legions not fighting are being reinforced and formed back up before being sent back out. Fallen squads are coming out of the spawning pits constantly and being hammered back into cohesive units. Armors are constantly being resized. Weapons are constantly being reforged. Broken siege engines and the bodies of the fallen are the grisly building blocks of walls that will be built up and torn down thousands of times over as the ceaseless battle continues. Any one of a thousand devils may stand upon his own decaying corpse as he fights on, trying to hold the very hill it died on when he was a general last week. It is a war without end that they are thrust back into, over and over again. The only respite from the horror of the melee is the torture of the spawning pits and the slim possibility of being promoted.

Oh Merregons. I remember having a moment of dawning awe and horror when I read their 3.5 stat block for the first time. "Every one of them in a group contributes their hit points to a total pool, when one dies they all do, but you have to chew through the ENTIRE pool to put one down? What? They all roll saves collectively and if one succeeds they all do, *what?* " And MUCH worse than that, "They get +4 to attack for EVERY other legion devil within 60 feet?" You can do the math on that if you want, but I'll tell you right now there were *gods* with stats that didn't go that high. Honestly I wonder a little how much playtesting they got before release in that edition. Because sure, you could take *one* of them easy. Three or four was becoming a Severe Problem. A thousand? There weren't really things in the game that could fight that. Which maybe is the point. A perfect embodiment of the Lawful part of Lawful Evil. Not individuals, but parts of a system. A perfect, horrifying grinder almost nothing in the multiverse could stand against.

The art in here is terrific, but it often raises more questions for me, like why do they all seem to look exactly like one another, when pictured together in groups ? Is that a function of the anti-chaos aspects of their being? And when one of the Generals or other high-ranking devils die, do they reincarnate again as a dretch and have to start all over again, or do they reincarnate in the form in which they most recently died? If the former, is it centuries of fighting and leveling up or does it all process quicker than that?

Nut shell from real life lore translated into gaming systems. a.) Every spirit or Fae has a bane which can be used to bend the will of a spirit. And they hate humans/ mortals for having the ability to use them. b.) Spirits, demons, angels what nots are align domain to one of the seven virtues or deadly sins in brief. They are manic compulsive in following their vice. The virtue of Chasity/Modesty falling into sexual denial and persecution of Wrath/Pride down to having wet dreams. ( religions scam people through fear & shame.) Demons/ D&D succubus temp mortals through logical mentally challenging their morality to indulging in their vice which creates chaos throughout and around the rest of their social life. ( That woman isn't having sex with you, but she isn't helping you one bit. What type of friend feeds your ego to get up drunk in a bar fight only to laugh when you get beat into the E.R. or drunk tank at jail.) 2.) Last game shop from about 20years ago we mix WotC 3e D&D/ Star Wars on comparing Optional Training Time of skill ranks & feat. Compare real life military skill training to Star Wars soldier class. In short if you have a trainer then your PC can gain 1d3 levels in a given class as part of on the job training. b.) Phantom of the Opera setting, a succubi soul feeds/ energy drains class levels a group of rogue/bards of their creativity acting as a muse to build up their levels just to drain them back down. " .. emotional vampire .." they are her herd. Then the barony assassin guild of ghouls turns her favorite into a ghoul/ ghast. The player can still PC the ghoul as a bard and gain levels but the succubi can no longer feed from him. So the bard has worst depression than Louis from " Interview of a Vampire," cause they can no longer feed the affection kiss of their muse. Ghouls are very good at getting rid of body murder evidence. c.) We also used Whitewolf/World of Darkness ( WoD) vampire, werewolf, Mage the Awakening rules on stripping down, powering up, and spirit capture. Otherwise just act like a bunch of undiscipline teenage mouth sallow girls or bar hopping tramps. Crime kingpins have to be very orderly in logistics, math, and command social pretense. Their arm candy trophy wives on the other hand ? d.) F- WotC/ and the other, it is your game so run it as over the top campy Japanese anime if you want. It seem to be the theme of things now days. My old games treat Baator as over work tax paper pushers. And they outsource to neutral align PC with lawful inclinations. As they Say in Demon and Changeling/ Fae .. everything is a contract with a catch. Along with favors/debts owed. Even the upper planes beings grimace and shrug when dealing with neutrals making deals and working for Baator devils and night hags. What every it takes to place a speed bump in front of the Abbys in dealing with the Blood War.

I don't understand how demons are a threat to devils when the devils have so much Disincline Strategic Mindsets and even a Hive mind. Like i never knew they had a Hive Mind but honestly thats a battle changing ability. To be in sych with every move and not ever to lose morale, Teleporting in sych to flank foes while nullifying the opposiing parties Teleportion. It's scary in a fightinf Roman legion kind of way. So in Comparison Demons should be like Barbarian tribes the Romans faced, so how do they keep up or is it just shear power and numbers , turning any sould they can into a demon, while devils would rather refine a soul with proper torture and corruption before turning it into a devil. It would be interesting if you could go into this, maybe a video on demons in comparison and a video on how thier battles actually work against each other.

@@AJPickett I made the very same mistake, but in my mind, they make a whole lot more sense as Devils than they are as Demons. Plus, I can't see a reason why the Devils wouldn't create such a type of unit. They could easily be a subtype of Merregon evolved to specialize in archery, for instance, what with their two pairs of arms, hyper-developped back muscles and two sets of eyes. I'm certain Merregons are not limited to one type of heavy infantry melee combat unit only. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if the Nine Hells of Baator would be the biggest supplier of cold iron-tipped arrowheads in all the multiverse. Knowing the Baatezu, they must have absolutely impeccable supply chains... Now that I think of it, that's something that is far less discussed : who is supplying all of these operations and crafting all that gear? 🤔
@Harrowed2TheMind9 ай бұрын
Addendum: Now that I think of it, my DM accidentally resolved a part of that issue by equipping all of his abyssal gnoll legionnaires, hired by Yeenoghu, with Quivers of Lies* (from the Book of Vile Darkness, no less!). I've no doubt a specialized version of such a magic item must be common in their ranks, or at least among their more elite units. If not, then Avernus' ground must be riddled with what are essentially cold iron caltrops, as I am certain that this dual purpose is not lost in the Devils' sadistic minds, contributing ever more to the plane's jagged terrain. *The current listed price (12K gp) is WAY too high, in my mind, especially with the added condition of telling a lie every time, which must be a real hassle for Arcane Archers who get their hands on the thing, as it certainly interferes with their verbal components.

Hi Aj. Great video, always enjoy new info on the Nine Hells. Had a question for you if you would be so kind as to answer. You're mentioning of the Orthons being trained on multiple different Prime Material worlds brings up a question I've had for some time. Which is to say, how far out into creation does the Blood War span, and with that, do the Outer Realms as related to Toril/Realmspace extend out beyond that solar system to any notable degree? I had thought that everything was contained in Realmspace and it's relevant Outer Planes, but I've seen multiple mentions of events in the conflict seen in other parts of the overall Material Plane. Thus, is there any info you can provide as answer? Thank you.

It’s a fun concept. Most devils and demons are just parts for weapons and armor in my setting, kept alive in vats or pools, with the winners of the Blood War selling their spoils to the most powerful armies left. But the process of making items from them requires flesh shapers and mind-control, so ilithids, hags, and dragonborn are among the experts required. The economic network is chaotic, full of rivalries and trade secrets, and a good bone weapon or veinplate carapace can *consume* its wearer if fed too much blood. Stitched Devils still roam like prototypes, or as pain-breakers used to ensure the items don’t regain their minds. The resulting arms race has led other cultures to create magic armor from stone, wood, and metal. Our current campaign’s BBEG is the super-barghest who owns most of the devil flesh, trading it with the dominant dragonborn Time Lords to keep his hobgoblins safe and useful. He keeps one of the realm’s last Night Hags on retinue to keep the ilithids that work for the dragonborn from reverse-engineering all his secrets. Naturally, most soldiers and mounts can only hope for the equivalent of +1 leather and bone. The truly powerful weapons and armors are reserved for elites, champions, and generals, only rarely gifted to lower ranks that prove themselves.

Love your content and don’t mean do be rude but I would ditch the background music. At least this one as it overpowers your voice. I find it hard to focus on what you’re saying. Besides that keep it up. Will join patreon as soon as I remember it.

Cant talk about the hells without heavy metal. Sorry AJ doesnt make the rule, and anyone who disagrees needs to take it up directly to the Doom slayer (which is why it cant be changed)

(Also might be your sound balance cuz it sounds fine on my end)

This is entirely true, it's in the contract... vids on the Nine Hells must be accompanied with heavy metal music. (in this case, Chrom and Iluvatar by St.Nullum app.soundstripe.com/artists/661 )

I am the solutions guy! Turn on closed captions so that the words are up on screen for you 🤘 this way you can rock out and know whats being said I didn't have trouble hearing anything myself though

Hey man, your videos are informative, but I would love to see the art credits.

I believe it is all AI that he does himself if I remember an earlier video correctly

@KimKimeraKimes Oh, man, that's disappointing to hear. Wish people would refrain from using the art plagiarism robots.

Im sure this video is great.... But i clicked on the video for a explanation on the legion of the 9 hells. Not for music that's drowning out what im actually interested in which is you talking.

the music volume is set at less than 5%

I am sorry to hear that you had difficulties hearing him speak. The music on my end wasn't giving me the same problems. One thing that may be helpful is to turn closed captions on so that you can see the words on the screen 🤘
