Wow, I didn't expect you to be literally the only reviewer to fuss over the minifigures.

Really surprised me how critical other reviews of the set weren't. It looks like an absolute mess, and the figures aren't an aspect I looked at and went "oh those look great!" Because, really, they're just alright.
@CrazyChemistPL9 ай бұрын
The thing about minifigures here is that they are crazy interchangeable, especially if you are okay with not displaying them all at the same time. It's not something LEGO advertises, but the uniform torso from Paul can realistically be used on him, Letho or Gurney. Paul and Jessica can be made to wear stillsuits, and Gurney's armor makes just as much sense for Letho or Duncan. However, this may be just me fanboying over this set, I love it to bits and honestly I don't really get all this critique of the Technic bits. The functions are great, it looks great in my opinion and that it isn't 100% accurate doesn't bother me, it's not a scale model after all and for LEGO it is easily enough. It doesn't hide it's LEGO nature as well, with visible Technic and studs, but for me it is a great change of pace actually, after the overly smooth Icons cars.

I saw in another video that you're supposed to hold the tail further back. By pushing the gear rack closer to the rear end the flapping movement of the wings should work better :) Great video as usual!
@Xaiux9 ай бұрын
I went through the same thought process with mine where I double checked I built it right because the flapping function just really isn't that impressive. The interior limits on how the wings move really limits what you can do

4:38 - Look at that giant injection site on the old rotor. That is what we call a "hot drop" and I'd also say there's "splay" in that part. Not their best work. I guess they injected the new part from the edge of the part instead of from the middle. At 4:18 you can see some ejector pin marks on the new blade (about 6th lego stud from the front and 3rd lego stud from the end).

Great review! I think your description of this set is entirely fair. It reflects the fact that Dune fans will likely be attracted to it as a collectible, and others might not find enough to make it worth the price. I say this as a happy buyer, albeit one who loves the latest Dune movies.

I hate to say that but I am afraid there could be something wrong with your build. I've finished mine, and the flapping mechanism works flawlessly with the backside wings also flapping happily. During the building process I was not sure if everything was correct because testing this function in an early stage just shows tiny movements. But what I noticed was that at that time the backside wing attachments always had larger movement than the ones on the front. Now having the model completed and the wings attached the front ones flap more prominently. I hope you will find the time and have the nerves to recheck the build to get the mechanism fixed. It's such a wonderful design and deserves it ;)
@CrazyChemistPL9 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure you are pressing the wing flutter actuator too fast. It requires certain rythm, if you do it slightly slower, the effect should be much better, although the front wings have greater movement indeed, but that's just a byproduct of the mechnism. For something that doesn't use rubber bands (or even cogs), I think it is an acceptable tradeoff. To me this set is great, it reminds me a lot of the old 90s Technic where you build System compatible more or less skeletal frame, decorated it with System bricks from the outside and filled the inside with intricate mechanisms, much better than the current style of studless frames and fairings with next to none System bricks. This is a great blend of System and Technic. And, as complex as it is, the Technic mechanisms aren't as mind boggling as for example Airbus Helicopter from last year. Plus, whenever there's particularly extensive Technic section, they tend to switch gears and give you some System assembly next. I think the accuracy is quite good, I don't think they could've done much better with the cockpit shape, while keeping the openable doors. The biggest point of contention are of course wing roots, but it would've been hard to decorate that area better while still keeping the functionality and I love the functionality, it is a great stress reliever for adults. The exposed studs and Technic makes this set not hide its LEGO nature and I actually appreciate it - it is like LEGO of the times past, when I first fell in love with it. Sure, this is probably largely nostalgia speaking, but to me it was easily one of the best LEGO experiences since I came back to it 2 years ago after a break of 16 years.

I do think the rear wings should move a little more, but them moving less than the front set is lore accurate. The front wings are closer to the aircraft’s centre of gravity, so for the trim conditions moment equilibrium, the rear wings must have a smaller area or produces less lifting force by moving less. Should it be this drastic of a difference though? No.

Regarding the flapping function I watched the solid brix studios review and was saying you need to press on the bar towards the rear rather than the front and the wings seemed to flap better, maybe something, maybe nothing.

I've built a smaller, 4 wing ornithopter from the movie with similar mechanism and also noticed how important it is for wings to be heavier on the outside (when they were perfectly balanced, they performed badly). Perhaps same issue here.

15:00 this is what annoys me on so many sets, as someone startet buildign in the late 80s i dont get exactly why so many pins and axels have to have colours. i get that some complex mechanisms from bigger technic sets are easyer to build with this help but on all display pieces its lost and totaly unnecessary given the fact that most barts are still made and available in nearly every colour, at least the basic ones white and black so no need for blue/red/yellow in this set at all
9 ай бұрын
I guess it's because Technic requires so many of rhe connectors per set that they decided to mass produce the most used ones in just one color, at least most of the time.

Hard to determine from the speed build.. would modifying the interior by removal of the folding or the flapping - halp the model in accurecy ? Making the wings manually unfold one by one using a simple hinge, or making them static - not flapping

@oskarskalski29829 ай бұрын
It was the set I was really looking forward to in the 2024 (apart from the upcoming medieval village) but it seems like someone in the production team couldn't decide. One team wanted normal system pieces, other wanted technic set and they went for a compromise. It's not a setback for me because I'm more of a technic guy) but this review makes me thinks twice about getting it ... although I'll probably buy it anyway;). And there are some good deals at about 120 euro in Poland so not as pricey.
9 ай бұрын
I dunno, my first reaction is just like I feel now - I love the functions over looks, and I wouldn't give it 2/5 for looks and authenticity. Like, I'd love to see a more visually accurate model, but I don't think I would have preferred a static piece over this, not in a million years. The colors are hit or miss, though, that was an obvious fumble.

For the wing flutter function you’re holding it too far forward, if you’d watch the initial reveal videos you put your thumb on the rear of the mechanism not the front as you’ve done.

It's odd that the fltutering effect seemed markedly better at the reveal. It's possible there's some learned skill involved in getting the timing right, but I've watched several reviews (With yours being the most in-depth) and everyone's wings work this same way. In the original video the rearmost wings appear to roll from left to right as a fixed group, where here they barely move at all. I'm wondering if they changed something...

Just wondering: my model has a problem with the wings on the right side of the model. They bend down slighly. This issue is not present on the left wings. I swapped the wings but the issue only occurs on the right side. I think it has something to do how the new wing pieces are moulded.
@CrazyChemistPL9 ай бұрын
Seems like all 8 wings are bent slightly so they always point slightly up on one side and slightly down on the other. I'm debating removing the wings from mine, soaking them in hot water and then putting them under something heavy to try straightening them.
@themapplesperiod9 ай бұрын
As @CrazyChemistPL mentioned all the wings are a single part that has a specific bend towards blade left so when they are assembled the ones on the port side are almost straight (the bend being counteracted by gravity) while the ones starboard show an even bigger bend due to gravity. It's also one of the reasons why the flapping mechanism looks bad in the video - the the bottom right wings are touching the ground stopping the motion. I guess this could've been resolved by lego making the wings with 2 mirrored moulds but probably didn't due to budget. I'm also interested if they can be straightened somehow without damaging the pieces but am not sure I want to risk it.
