This might sound a bit exaggerated, but I think this might be my all-time favorite Pirates set. Nostalgia plays a role, but the thing about this set in particular is that whenever you try to modify it and add stuff to it, it somehow takes away from the overall aesthetic. I think Sabre Island is proportioned perfectly, and the design is extremely difficult to improve upon. You can add a barrel or maybe a ladder in the back, or some more plant material perhaps, but as soon as you start messing with the general structure, I think it detracts from the original set. That's why it's one of their best sets in this theme, in my opinion. I still have it on display, and it's still so charming and colorful; absolutely love it.

It really is a nice set,I miss these types of "small base" sets Lego used to make,they were so simple yet creative with what you can do.

Ya they didn't skimp on the pieces either which is why so many other sets feel like they need a few more pieces. About the only thing that could be added is a barrel like he said in the video. But if we really want the bottom inside to have some detail - just move that sword on the wall a bit down and inside.

This is peak LEGO design to me, you get the foundation (the baseplate) characters, (minifigs), play functions (cannon) and just cool pieces in general like the palm trees and window walls.

This was my first “Pirates” set when I was 8. Dumbest thing I ever did was trash all my Legos when I was 18 or so and all “grown up.” They did not seem cool at the time but I wish I had them all back!

That’s something I’m going to try to do from now on, showing all of the sets from a wave together (as long as I can fit them all in a single shot, lol). It’s fun to see how it would’ve looked if my parents had been rich. 😄

I could be completely mistaken but I think this was my first "big" lego set. The next being Anakin's pod racer. This one in particular I remember building and thinking "what an odd building..."

I had this set back in the day, as it happen I think I only got it a year or two after it was first released, it might have been on the way to being discontinued at the time, but I can remember getting for Christmas alongside a larger Lego set, of which I think may have been the Lego Space Police Galactic Enforcer but I may be wrong. One memory that I had of this set was of the time that I wrote into the Lego Club where I said that while I still liked the look of the set (I think that I was yet to get the set at the time) I was curious as to why it didn't have a cell for any captured Pirates. I got a reply thanking for my letter and who ever wrote it plugged the Lagoon Lockup set of which he said could go nice with the set should I ever get one, which I later did. As it happened just for the record I never had a Lagoon Lockup, because i used to buy sets all across the Lego line, not just Pirates, although they were still always my favourites.

Nice review again, I'm watching all the vintage Lego pirates videos here now and brings back memories. I wonder why this set is called Sabre Island by many though, just had a look in the 1989 European catalogue (three languages: English, French and Dutch) and what is called these days as 'Eldorado Fortress' was actually Fort Sabre in 1989, and what is here called Sabre Island was called Governor's Bastion. The Barracuda pirate ship was originally called Dark Shark as well. Just wonder where the name changes came from ^^. Hope you're alright, I noticed that last activity was months ago.

I’d definitely like to do IP2002 someday. The only thing holding me back (besides not owning any of the sets) is that I’m still figuring out how to film white objects on a white background without washing everything out and retaining the level of color contrast I like. Hopefully I’ll get that nailed down soon. 😊

I love this set and I own this set too. Trikbrix I'd love to know your personal opinion which space set do you think is better, Ice Planet 2002, Space Police 2, Blacktron 2, or M-Tron? those were the four sets that came out when I was a kid when I started enjoying Legos.

Ooo, that’s a tough one... I really like the black and white color scheme of Blacktron 2, but M:Tron is hard to beat, too... for me, it would probably be a toss-up between those two. Although IP2002 and SP2 DO have some of the best large spaceships... I give up. They’re ALL awesome! 😄

This is a real classic for sure! I love that printed panel with the bricks showing - very cool! The first generation of imperial soldiers - aka bluecoats - are the best looking soldiers in my opinion! Thanks for sharing this wonderful set and keep up the good work :-)

Again really nice video. For washing did you use hydrogen 3% or 6%? Any what about oxy, with or without?

Thanks! I think I was using 3%, WITH OxyClean. About 3 days in the sun, if I remember correctly. They actually cleaned up pretty well from where they started, but still not quite brand new-looking. The other problem I had BrickLinking this set is that some of the bricks I received WERE brand new, and modern bricks have a more translucent appearance that’s instantly noticeable when placed next to their vintage counterparts. But I think I may just be too picky... 😄 Thanks for watching!
