I think you should mix the 4x4 technique randomly throughout the snot technique, because the mix of both would give that patchy look of concrete that’s been patched and redone at different times, like a real airport. Too much of both would look too uniform, a mix of both would give it a satisfying and natural looking texture.
@TheOriginal1234
@TheOriginal1234 Жыл бұрын
Usually in airports you will find the concrete slabs nearby the gates. This is due to the large amounts of ground contact by planes/ground equipment, making it 100x easier to replace a singular tile instead of setting new concrete in the damaged area. If your reading this BrickCrafts, you could also make one of the gates be under construction where some of the tiles would be getting replaced! Just some suggestions!

Thats a better idea than what i was thinking lol, i was just gonna say that since he can’t do the whole thing in the 4x4 plates and it would look weird to do it in just part, that he shouldn’t do it at all. But you’re right about it being more natural if it was just interspersed throughout, and that would probably fix the “cant do it on the yellow lines” problem.

I think that you should mainly avoid any taller-pointing grass pieces for the airfields. Use shorter clover/leaf pieces to imply small bushes or patches of vegetation, and the small clover-like green pieces you used to plant the grass by themselves adds a lot of texture already when used. I've been thinking for a while that you maybe over-use taller grass parts--which makes sense, since they're explicitly 'grass' pieces, after all. But for an airport, silhouette of the ground, as well as a neat and tidy appearance are key.
@Geo-Luke
@Geo-Luke Жыл бұрын
Definitely, you can add more patches like you did in 4:21 and it itself makes it look like a grass that is short but isn'a a golf course or perfect house grass. basic LEGO structure with this randomness of 1 flat level patches and round pieces with holes make it perfect for short grass in the airfield. If you want you can can use taller grass in the meadows further around the airfield. To be honest I think you could change the grass in historic village as well, as it doesn't make sense in my opinion. I mean, there could be some patches of taller grass behind not used houses or in some corners where residents dont care, but most of it in "used" areas should be somehow short-trimmed - and I dont mean that one guy mowing meadow grass that's half his height - it looks ridiculous :D Tall grass makes sense in forest, meadows, fields, forgotten or distant/unavailable places etc. In parks, squares, lawns or places where people walk there should be only short or middle lenght grass By the way, I love the idea of concrete slabs :D

I suppose one solution would be to have the rail line go underground at the back of the table, meet up with the terminal building, then loop round to the front of the table before reconnecting with the rest of the rail system. Depending on how complex the train system is, you could split off cargo and freight trains from the passenger trains, and have the passenger trains go into an underground station visible from the front of the table while the other trains go behind the station in a hidden tunnel. Alternatively, if you're not splitting the trains by type, the front of the table could just be a cut-away tunnel section with interesting features and easter eggs.

I am cabin crew and everyday I am at the airport especially airside so I see it everyday and the grass never gets that tall, they cut it regularly. Here both look way too overgrown and abandoned. Mixing the techniques for concrete looks super nice. Unpopular opinion: you should not add vegetation to what would be super short cut grass on the airport. If you add a fire department to the airport, you should add one of those super ugly blue or green training fuselages you always see in airports.

You could consider maintenance pathways. Also, at our airport, YYZ, they have a falconer and bee keeping. So they need ways to travel around the field. Complicates things, but might help add points of interest. Also, there are usually hangars for maintenance if you didn't want a fire brigade or a did a multiple purpose building.

Why dont you consider turning the airport around? Later on when its all filed, the actual runway part will most likely be the least interesting part of an airport (maybe only 1 plane on there, and a lot of empty space.). It could be very interesting if that lies in the back, so in the front you could see the airport terminals with a crossectioned interior, and the parked airplanes next to it. In the back you would still see the runway, but could easily be seen over the top of the terminal.

You should keep the pavement as it was before the 4x4s. And in my opinion lose the grass by the "A" and "B" signs. Where I live the grass is always mowed flat by those signs so to prevent obstruction and I think it's a little too busy by the signs with all the vegetation.
@00WhiteBlade
@00WhiteBlade Жыл бұрын
For the grass I wonder if there's a trick using different shades of green to simulate the "plaid" patterns left by lawnmowers on a lot of lawns. I think the spikey look could be swapped out for this "plaid" pattern using flat tiles and it would communicate the idea of mowed grass. Right now I'd say it's definitely too bushy. One option I like is using 1x1x1 flat green tiles in the snot technique, one row tilted 45 degrees like a diamond, the next row regular snot method, then just repeat. This causes little triangles to stick up every other row. You can also randomize them to some degree, though they don't stay in very well. Amazing video!! I think you know best and your creative techniques are incredible!

The patches at a real airport are for repairs for things like electrical or plumbing and upgrades to navigation equipment, so they arent random, as Im sure you know. They would be in places you would expect, like near lights, or radar equipment. Something to consider. Also, for realism, dont forget the VOR, marker beacon, and radar equipment that would exist at an airport with a control tower. Maybe a compass rose and wind socks too. I love the whole build so far. It is my favorite lego town/world build.

That floor could have a lot of glass which allows you to show minifigures walking to the raised walkways onto the larger planes. Secondly, a small hanger for private planes at the end of the smaller runway could allow you to add a lot more details and character to the airport. Thirdly a number of planes flying overhead or in mid takeoff would look really cool!

As a Lego and Aviation enthusiast, this looks great! However, the simple gate name of ‘1, 2 and 3’ is unrealistic and you can split it between the cargo and passenger terminal as in most remote airports. The patches of grass, however, can be fixed if you raise the hinged sign mechanism by two struts or so, and it’ll give the impression of slightly overgrown when compared to a scaled plane model. Other than that, it looks fantastic!

i still say a clifftop cafe with roof greenery/potted trees and flowers/vines, and serving would add a nice tirered element to the area next to the bridge and square on the top section. a nice transistion from the row of houses to the cliff and stairs. and plazas usually have some form of food serving nearby, so that fits. large glass windows for the first floor with the planned lighting would look cozy i believe as you can see the patrons eating, or string lights hanging from poles for the rooftop serving area.

To our Netherland friends: release the Lego bricks to this guy and prioritize delivery so we get more Lego stories! Meanwhile, for the grid, I personally like the original design. You can see the lines in the Lego bricks which create its own grid structure and I feel like it’s a bit cleaner For the grass, why not maybe use a single stud topped with a smooth single stud or use single smooth studs (both options with different colors). You can mix that with the grasses further away from the sign Also for areas people can’t see, why not install strategically placed adjustable mirrors along different parts of the wall so people can see certain elements of the backside of the areas?

Typically the stand areas are look different to the taxiway/runway areas. This is because often bituminous bound materials are used for runways/taxiways (quick and straight forward to repair, although less hard wearing), and regular grid, concrete slabs are used for stands (harder wearing, but take longer to repair!) The disruption can usually be on stand areas, but loosing a runway to repairs for significant time is not ideal! Could also change shade of grey for the runway/taxiway? Many airports you'll notice the runway/taxiway is lighter colour than the stands because concrete typically lighter grey! So I would suggest snot technique for runways/taxiways and stand areas with the 4x4s. Could also break out an area of the 4x4s and have some workmen doing a concrete slab repair (or utility repair!)

I really do think that the lowered grass is also the right decision, but maybe just use less tight groups so that way there is an evenness or uniformity to the grass so that way it looks like it is cut regularly. Maybe also you could add a building in the city that is the company that mows the grass around the moc overall.

If you look at San Juan airport I think that it would be a good model of a runway/airfield. For the terminal I think it would be really cool if you based it off of Raleigh/Durham international airport as it looks really cool. For the grass I think a mix of tall grass and short grass is a good idea. I think that your idea of people mowing the grass is awesome! Perhaps add some trash or debris as there is usually some amount of that in the grass. When you move on to the details on the airfield/runway maybe add some fire trucks and other baggage haulers on the ground.

On the 4x4 versus SNOT - most airfields don’t want the slabs to be so obvious, but much of what you see on the slab lines is joint sealant. Having said that, I really like the 4x4 pattern, so my vote is for it. Also, for the fire building , that’s typically called ARFF (in the US anyways) - Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting. Small detail, but maybe the sign could show that instead of just fire.

You have such nice greenery around your city. I think it is normal for an airport to be more like a golf course than a hay field. You might consider adding green 1x1 round plates with the four leaf parts scattered for a low to the ground texture. Just a few since, again, it is normal for an airport to have an artificial landscape. I like that you have sections with SNOT and sections of 4x4 tiles, it gives an appearance that the concrete has been repaired over time. Consider adding patches of the larger 8x8 tiles or the 8x16 tiles if they exist in light bluish gray. You could also add the older light gray in places for more contrast.

You are a very talented builder. Your mind works in a 3D creative state to foresee how the modifieds will fit together and offer the design you are looking for.

The 4x4 will work well to add details like broken or worn areas using other build methods in random squares. Especially where the planes would turn in and out of the paths, that is why they use that method since it's easier and faster to replace a square than try and patch an area and make it level. Mixing up the colours slightly would give the appearance of newer fixed areas.

Watching all the roads slot together is super satisfying!!! The four by four method wouldn’t work with the building techniques for all the fine details, so maybe it should be in smaller patches than what’s there already, maybe with some darker colours too to look like there have been patch jobs where small cracks had formed!

I think adding small stop signs on the roadway in opposite directions parallel to the taxiway would be a nice touch especially because at a real airport ground service vehicles need to yield to oncoming aircraft, also a white and black checkered line where the edge of the roadway meets the taxiway would be a nice touch as well.

One thing I have had success with is actually buying used Lego pieces. There’s often color variations in the pieces that work really well for showing “organic” wear, and that might just work for the airfield without you having to mix building techniques like you are contemplating.

One small detail I remember from a reality show about an airline was that they had to remove a fox or pick up some fox poop from the airfield because the foxes would come in at night to lie on the lightboxes because they were warm. So you could have a fox somewhere or a worker who scoops up some poop.

For the grass, maybe a mix of green flower studs on top of the plate studs will give it a varried texture, but keep it low to the ground? I love your city, keep it up!

I definitely think that you should use the 4x4 tiles they really given authentic concrete look, as well it could be easy to show some cracks or broken concrete that way by using other sizes and shapes of tiles

The empty area near the airport should have some hotels, rental car places, maybe a bus station. Other kinds of travel infrastructure that you find near most airports

For the field foliage, try using flower 1x1 (ID 6426463) and plant w/ plate 1x1 (ID 6420914). It'll still add detail but it shouldn't be tall enough to start obstructing the signs and lights.

Making like a large hangar could be cool as well. Perhaps with a private jet stored inside or something! Could go well near that spot you were mentioning the Oil tanks and stuff!

Amazing project. Where is the museum, when do you plan to open? Are you doing this full time? How do you fund it? Are you a designer? All these questions and many more would be very nice to be tackled in a video…

In all that empty space next to the airport you could add a cargo railyard where merchandise gets trannsfered between airplanes and freight trains. When you open your museum, my kid and I will fly from Canada to visit!

Amazing work as always. 😊 It’s also clear that you have a real passion to make the airport as operationally realistic as you can - much as I would personally do for railways, if I had the the money, space and skill to do anything on such a scale!

Definitely use the 4x4 concrete slabs as much as you can on the airfield where planes go! It will make the runway and roads stand out a lot more and will make the flat grey less boring to look at. It will also make the airfield different from the roads and sidewalks throughout the city.
