Very few high quality reviews exist of these old Batman sets. These videos are amazing for preservation’s sake.

Agree 100%! Unsure how popular they are short term, but seeing reviews of older sets that Jang never reviewed, is one of my biggest joys. It's just so neat to see a modern day review of a classic set, or 20 year old set, with newer eyes, that can review objectively.

As a kid, I dreamt of this set. Even when the 2012-ish one was out, something about how dark this felt and like a full asylum instead of one thing just always gripped me. Scarecrow was also my favourite, so his tower was so cool to me

This set is crazy evocative of Batman: Arkham Asylum despite coming out years before it, too. Multiple buildings, the aesthetic, the choice of villains.

the build techniques back then were undeniably worse, but there is such a charm to these old sets. I feel as though the lower definition of the sets from this period means that you have to do some amount of imagination based work, which in my opinion, means that inaccuracies seem/feel less obvious. Maybe its just nostalgia but i love this era of lego where they try and represent something with the broadest strokes possible.

I agree. Take the contents of the cell for example. One kid could imagine it's a table, another a chair. One could imagine the glass is water, another a bottle medicine, etc.

This was my favorite era: in the early 2000s, the building principles were so sloppy. So many of the Star Wars sets would fall to pieces if you looked at them wrong. By this point, they still had some hunky designs but they stayed together and were very playable by comparison.

i dont really see how they were worse? they very much follow the priicpals of interlocking lego brick design. they are just less true to the originals due to using actual bricks/blocks?

The realistic rifle element was still in production in 2006 (introduced 1996, retired 2013 with the Lone Ranger) so they specifically chose that musket over it for some reason.
@thebrickhiker
@thebrickhiker Ай бұрын
I'd love to know the reason for this - perhaps the musket was a cheaper part and so it fit the budget? This is the kind of info I'd love to find out from the designer as it's such an interesting and charming touch. I just figured that was the only rifle they had at the time....

Lego Batman 2006 really does blend the gap between the Batman animated series and the Batman Arkham games perfectly, it’s like the Lego designers took the original cartoon, tweaked the designs to be more legoified, then Rocksteady took those Lego designs and made them into a more realistic game. Arkham is a good example of this, it’s the BTAS brown brick colour scheme with BTAS inspired antagonists, but instead of the more boxy Edwardian mansion it’s modeled more like a gothic castle, something that was translated over to the Arkham games, it even has a big castle turret that the game copied almost 1 to 1 Also as a kid: this set in a reference book around 2012/13 after Lego DC relaunched was my first exposure to Nightwing. I didn’t know that robin could grow up, that was the coolest thing ever to me and I was gutted that he wasn’t in a modern set!

This set was designed by Bjarke Lykke Madsen and according to Brickset they took inspiration from both the comics, and movies, plus old and new spooky looking buildings. Jens Kronvold Frederiksen designed the details in the interior so you'd have to ask them about that dark 3rd floor! Sadly no mention as to why muskets were included when more realistic rifles were available at the time.

Oh man, I remember getting this set back in Christmas of 08 and how excited I was to have all of these additional villains to team up with the rest of my rogue’s gallery and some guy called nightwing. The asylum parts brought along with it so much creativity into building castles, bases for good, and bad guys, and making entirely new prisons! Truly was a standout set in my childhood. And I still have the sticker sheet with the omitted names on the cell doors because I wanted to use them for a variety of different characters to be locked up! Good times…

Thanks Jang, I love the old school reviews

Bought this set used a few years ago and it still continues to be one of my absolute favourite Lego sets of all time. The spooky atmosphere and decrepit castle-like structures just appeals to me sooo much, along with the fact that it has the most amount of jail cells out of any Arkham Asylum set, and that creepy room on the top floor of the main building is so ridiculously detailed and suggestive, it almost reveals some of the darker practices that might be taking place at the Asylum. Only thing really missing from the set is a Hugo Strange minifig imo, but the lineup is still fantastic!

It’s so interesting that you mentioned the ambulance mirror printing. I noticed that on the newish Lego Friends set with an ambulance didn’t have mirror printing and I felt like it looked very odd to see on an ambulance because I’m so used to seeing mirrored AMBULANCE on actual ambulances. So seeing this mirrored like that looks right.

Jang, what an awesome review. I had this set as a kid, hard to believe just how old it is now. I played with the ambulance all the time, and the separate buildings made it really easy and fun to set up an entire "courtyard" play space. Having the hero and especially villain minifigs that looked straight out of the comic books or animated TV shows was really, really cool. Felt like the luckiest kid in the world opening it up in front of my parents.

This hits me in the nostalgia nerve. Such a fun set at the time and I loved the glow in the dark head. Do I have even a single one of those figures anymore? Nope. But I still have many of the printed parts and find them very useful for custom stuff. Thanks again for a great review, Jang!!!
@Howlox

I love that this set is in separate structures. Nowadays I think they want it as all one piece so it has that display-ability that older fans crave. I think that just ends up hiking up the price. I used to love spacing things out and imagining the empty space to be another area. Newer sets end up being more expensive yet give less freedom for kids.
@joncorso6103
@joncorso6103 Ай бұрын
That "light" above the bed on the top floor is totally the headpiece you put on a patient's head to give electroshock 'therapy'. That's why it raises and lowers above the bed. And the bars on the sides are for strapping them down.

Would be nice to be able to connect the pieces if a kid wanted to, but I do like the flexibility of having them separate. Could make a court yard in the middle of the grounds in a way. Love that you did this review! There's definitely a shortage of quality reviews of older sets and honestly I wasn't even aware of this set! [as a Lego and Batman fan, I sadly *do* have both the 2013 and 2017 sets which cost a fair amount more back then, then this set did but both have nearly double the number of pieces]. Can't believe the third floor and all the accessories of darkness up there! Wow! And for whatever reason, I find the musket weapons to be very charming in this set! Thank you for reviewing this and thank you Leonard for requesting this! Love seeing older sets reviewed!

As has been said "If I haven't seen it, it's new to me.".😁 Funny was just looking into a retired Lego set before you posted this, Monster Fighters mansion. Yeah I came across some large stickers going across many bricks in another brand and thinking if I take it apart that is going to be problematic.🤔 Not that long ago for us older fans, used to be much thicker and chunkier. Kind of expected that, less custom flourishes and tighter play value. Those are just tools for preparing healthy vegetables they force the criminals to eat lol.😉 I don't miss those giant one-pieces since many can easily be replicated with smaller reusable components. I agree, that one tower has a lot of character to it. Awesome review btw.

With both the weirdly dark medical room and the fact that Scarecrow’s room lets him have weapons I’m wondering if the intended story of this set is supposed to be like a more cartoony version of Batman Begins (which came out the previous year) where Scarecrow fronted as an Arkham psychiatrist and tortured the inmates, rather than him being one of the inmates

This is such a great playset. Maybe one of the best I’ve seen - it doesn’t have open, dead space like most play sets did. I was way too old to buy these toy sets by the point they came out. Even LEGO Star Wars was on the upper end of my age bracket. I call them toys, because that’s what they are. The space in this set is meant for play, not display. I appreciate that your reviews include this perspective when appropriate, Jang. It’s important context, and they shouldn’t be judged like the unplayable X-Men Easter Egg Manor, which will never be played with by a child (at least, not with their parents’ permission!)
