The Glatorian era really got me back into bionicle at the time with the brighter colours and designs calling back to the early days. I found the previous few years pretty stale and while the Glatorian era was a big change - for me it really worked
@AllOutBrick Жыл бұрын
We're of the same mindset, I really needed the color pops back after years and years of muted tones

I wasnt fond of the Glatorian line as a kid, but looking back on it, it was a great evolution of Bionicle while taking it back to its roots introducing the life counter thing on the back which was a fantastic idea for a play feature and really fits with the gladiator battle theme of the new world and story. Also the character designs were REALLY cool, I had Gresh because I was obsessed with his weapon/shield pieces, and Malum is one of the coolest fire designs lego ever made.

In my opinion 2009 is a very underrated year. The sets again have bright, saturated colors, cool new pieces and an interesting story
@NickonPlanetRipple Жыл бұрын
Ohhh boy, this is where the discrepancy between the lore and sets becomes a gulf. It's always been a little awkward how Matoran and Toa and most (not all) other Bionicle characters were described as cyborgs, still looking mostly like the sets but with muscles and simple organs holding their otherwise mechanical frames together (represented wonderfully by the Miramax movies), but the Agori, Glatorian and other Bara Magnans are a whole different beast. Literally. These beings are born the old fashioned way, and are mostly organic minus some borg-like upgrades. If ever there was a time to introduce a smoother-looking, CCBS-like system that could somewhat accurately depict fleshy characters, this was it. Meanwhile, the 2009 movie made the character models look even MORE mechanical than the miramax ones, with constantly rotating screws and moving armor bits like a transformer. All of that said, these villager sets are pretty darned good. They compliment their corresponding Glatorian and add a lot of pop to this new world, reusing old pieces cleverly and mixing those brighter early Bionicle colors with darker later ones to make the most high-contrast, elemental feeling vibe yet. Uh.... about that. I'll talk about elements next time.

Yeah. The idea of them being organic beings with implants (actual cyborgs) never made sense, especially with nothing organic about them in any fiction. In fact, it would have made sense for them to just be a subspecies of Matoran from Bara Magna, with Glatorian being Bara Magna's version of Toa. Imagine Toa that didn't exist as heroes, but basically did what they wanted & represented their tribes for battles.

I'm gonna be honest, if it weren't for the breaking pieces I think this year of Bionicle would be right behind 2006 for me. The colors are so vibrant and each character is so unique from each other, which is a big leap from the classic "same set in 6 colors" that bionicle typically did

We honestly always liked the Agori (and the 2008 matoran as well), we thought they were good sets and we remember owning a few back when they came out. Our favorite then and now is still the Zesk (and the same with the Vorox), we think they were adorable little dudes, and them representing a whole species instead of one character and being quadruple was a unique. Plus with the right posing, you can get them in pretty cute and cool dog/cat like poses.

You dont get the new set smell from Av-Matoran/Agori villager sets cause they are not really sealed. Surrounding air gets inside of the packaging from the holes on the lids. Its also why the boxing is very flimsy and the lids are very easy to remove, cause you are just dealing with cardboard on plastic, no glue like on the Mahri ones that makes a seal. Very different from completely sealed plastic canister and completely sealed cardboard box sets.

As with the 2007 Matoran-sized sets, I only ever had one of the Agori, that being Metus (8976). While I didn't obtain him until November of that year, he is the only set to have the Av-Matoran torso in medium blue, and the Av-Matoran limbs in white. The hand pieces introduced in 2009 would appear the most often in dark stone gray, with Mata blue, Mata red, and white being tied for second. The legs on Atakus (8972) are exclusive in black to him, and he marks the final appearance of the Toa Mata feet (Voodoo Feet) in dark stone, as Metus does for that part in white. In conjunction, Raanu (8973) marks the first of two appearances of that part in Keet Orange (Flame yellow), and the first of four sets to have the hand piece in that color. The limbs comprising his arms in Metru red are exclusive to him, and he is the only Bionicle set to have the "Twin Cutters" from Matoro Mahri (8915) recolored in Mata red, though they first appeared in the "Combat Crawler X2 (7721) from the Exo-Force theme from 2007. But I don't know why the "Blazer Claw" from Vakama Hordika (8736) is reused here, even if that set was still available on Lego's online store until July of '07. Tarduk (8974) is the only set to have the Av-Matoran torso in lime green, and the first of three sets to have the Mahri Matoran blades in that color. His limbs in Metru green (earth green) only come in one other set after this, and he is the third and final appearance of the "Voodoo Claw" in lime green, and the last appearance of that part all together, having appeared in a "Drome Racers" set (4586) in September 2002, between the Nui-Rama (8537) from '01 and Tarduk. Berix (8975) marks the first and only appearance of the Toa Mata feet in Metru blue (earth blue), and of the limbs on his legs in medium blue. He also marks the first of two appearances of the Av-Matoran torso in Mata blue, and the first of three appearances of the arm limbs in medium blue-though one of the latter's appearances was in a Hero Factory set (7160) released in 2010. Berix marks the only appearance of the "Fire Sword" (repurposed as a "Water Sword") in medium blue, and is the final appearance of that part all together. Likewise, his shield is the final appearance of the "Chronicler Staff", both in "Warm gold" and the entire part in general. Zesk (8977) is the second of four sets to have the Av-Matoran torso in black, and is the final appearance of the Shadow Matoran feet. He is also the first of two sets to have the Av-Matoran limbs in tan. As a whole, the new head part would appear the most often in transparent fluorescent reddish-orange over the course of the remainder of Bionicle's original run, and even find its way into other themes after that.

I absolutely love this year, solid sets that push the boat all around, great pieces, another diverse cast of 6's, the Agori are my favourite matoran and their helmets, and the entire helmet change especially since with a simple rotation of the head it still works with the old masks, is my favourite. I love Raanu, Metus and Zask's masks in particular, Raanu's mask goes way too hard, it looks a weeping fire god and i immediately swapped it with Malum's so Malum could be a mighty stoic flame brute with his little imp by his side. Zask I actually illegal techniqued a little, the holes at the back fit the back bits of the helmet of the tan scorpion glatorian who i forget the name, but you can finagle the two together with that piece and if you put it Zask face forward it looks like a cool sand dun pharaoh crown. Metus's helmet, I'm sure you could probably do this with any three length connector, i think my connector set up might have just a little bit more flexibility, uh, but Metus's head, three connector to the part where you put a stock into your zamor sphere launcher holds the zamor in good whilst also being able to fire through the gap.

If you buy these used, you will need to be extremely careful, because the sockets on the hand pieces and two-toed feet are VERY bad. They are known to crack after only being attached a detached a couple times, and even while being very careful. Really, really shoddy for a Lego product. Thankfully, the hand pieces were improved in some later themes, but for G1 Bionicle, they are super dodgy.

wish I could say I enjoyed this era more but I feel they're way too minimal (not in a stylish way such as with the 2001-2004 designs). They can get kinda ugly in their part designs and I'd never been a fan of the head pieces. There's a noticeably cheaper feel to the parts which left a sort of bad taste in my mouth... I guess to sum it up 2009-2010 sort of felt as if it was a self parody era where they lost all semblance of being "lego technic" to me. The lore kinda took a hit too. glad to see others do enjoy them though, it's nice not seeing outright hate for these models as they tend to be the punching bags in bionicle discussions
