I got this set years ago for Christmas and it was amazing; I played with it for hours and hours every day! Still today, the batteries don’t need changing! However, the power functions are no longer in that locomotive. In fact, the only part of that set that is still in tact is the forklift!

I was not expecting the sudden bucket exclaim. I like it. Set looks great, has a lot of function to it. Really dig that crane though I wish it had a control cabin on top or some kind of obvious control panel below. I also really like that forklift despite it's lack of weight underneath. Thanks for the review- I enjoyed it :)

Oh the nostalgia coming back from this. Now that I'm back and know a lot more about trains from when I was 8/9, I can say it looks like an EMD gp series (gp-9M, gp-38, gp-39, or gp-40.)

The way you can lift stuff from the train to the crane, put it on the shelf thing, and use the forklift to take it to the truck, or backwards of that process, is a nice play pattern for the little ones. And the RC of course

I have the cable reel wagon only and I have been using the 1986 #7823 Container Crane Depot set to lift the cable reel loads and it worked. Amazing how train accessories including track from the past can still work with today's Lego trains.

The locomotive looks exactly like the ones currently in opperation in the Alaska Railroad. I think it's a GP40-2. Also, I know you said the forklift looks a little awkward, but I work around multiple of them at my job. Lego did a very good job of representing them. Or at least the bigger heavy dutier versions of them.

Nice review. Love everything except the cable reel drums. The loading/unloading crane would be perfect if lego could design a mechanism to lift 4 corners like in real life

The rubber band is made stiff so kids don't accidentally break it. And not everybody has extra rubber bands that small. But if you do replace it, the rubber band can be used on minifigs for customization.

My Wife and I were talking about getting a train set to put around the base of our Christmas Tree and we went looking at Lego sets for the kids today and I saw this set at Toys R Us and I was wondering if it was really worth it to spend $200.00 on it?!? It looks like it moves pretty quick on your review video, but was curious if you ever experienced any problems with the drive wheels slipping and spinning trying to get traction on the rails? I've had real train sets in the past and had problems were the track wouldn't conduct power or the wheels would slip especially with several train cars behind the locomotive! I haven't really bought myself Legos for about 20 years but I'm considering buying myself several sets now so I can play with my kids too!

+Michael Dutton I can't really speak to whether it's worth it, as that's completely subjective! I've not had any trouble with traction with modern LEGO trains, though. The drive wheels have rubber tires and the locomotives are pretty heavy with the batteries. I even use LEGO's very lightweight lithium battery pack unit and still get plenty of traction pulling twice as many cars as are in this set, though admittedly I don't have any tight, small loops, just 90 degree turns and some yard switch complexes. Certainly if traction ever becomes an issue for some unusual reason, you can put a piece of lead or a small bag of screws or ball bearings in the locomotive to weigh it down better. They have an excess of pulling power.

what I don't like about this train is that all the cargo is on pallets and they're small pieces of cargo. The last cargo train was awesome because it had really big and realistic cargo such as the shipping containers, the gas tanker, and the car transporter

I would use the forklift from the cargo truck set (the version before the current one) and I would cover the track with flat pieces.

best lego cargo train to date. way better then the passenger train you reviewed last time and the crane is so awesome. to be honest I want you to modify the crane by adding things like a control cab to so that its now a moc the could go in your city layout but I know your not big on suggestions. best cargo train set to date.

I do like the train, I think it looks good, but could use a little more detailing. Not worth the 200 dollars though. I know they include these every year, but I would have liked a boxcar, or a flatbed which could hold logs. I liked the look of the train, personally. Good American look, and its in my favorite color. Liked the cable drums and cow bar, but I didn't like the blue flat car as much. I do prefer the cargo loading area over last years, I like the buildings and storage area. With this set, I plan to combine it with a cargo train of my own design. I'll put the new train up front, my train behind that, and attach an oil and box car (Also of my own design) to the back, along with the cable drum and cow car. I'll take apart the blue flatbed, use the plate to replace the plates on my train, then make two smaller train cars to add to the back.

For years, I have enjoyed the LEGO Train series. I remember buying the 2006 High Speed passenger train. I have that set, the RED Cargo Train, Yellow Cargo Train, Red passenger train, and have a friend who has the Maersk and Horizon express trains. I am also a railfan who appreciates train of any culture, especially American and European. You could say I have some experience with trains. However, for this set, I am sorry to say, the experience I have was mocked with the sad element of streamlining and rush. We haven't had a cargo train since 2011, The Red Cargo Train. You could say this set was one of the best trains of the 21st century. You would think that LEGO would learn plenty from this set. Apparently not, for everything but a few features have been streamlined from the glorious RCT. Let us start with the locomotive. It looks nice at first, but when we take a moment to observe, it is really not. It is short and bland. If they followed the same schemes from the Maersk train, it would be fine. Instead, it looks rushed and they could have done a better job. The rolling stock is the real disappointment. It comes with 3 cars. The first is long and is used to carry pellets. It comes with an Octan gas container and a wheelbarrow, although I don't think anyone would ship an individual wheelbarrow. This car is nice and can be used for other purposes than pallets, like cars. The second is shorter, but this is my favorite. It carries 2 beautiful cable transporters. The third in tiny and ugly. It carries a single steer with food and water. Realistically, they would have a ROOF over the animal's head so it won't be disturbed by rain or other things. They could have made this a boxcar or something nice. The crane of OK, even though there is no control head at the top. At least it moves side to side on wheels. The truck is great for the pallets and other freight. the forklift is nice, even though the rubber-band is too stiff and, when released accidentally, will shoot up rapidly. I would recommend this new High Speed Passenger train instead. It is cheaper and is better for beginners.

That locomotive is a gp-38-2 diesel electrics locomotive, and is replaced with SD40-2s and dash 9s locomotives.

I do like the cargo train set it has a USA forklift, crane, and a USA locomotive and I still have them even the railroad cars from the set two containers which is simple container and a trash container even some cargo equipment the octan tank, wheelbarrow, and two cable wheels which are on containers and there is a truck even a office at the transfer station too.
