Lego City 60420 - Construction Excavator - Kind of a Review

The 2024 Lego City summer wave is here! Yay!
For this review I decided to go straight into the 60420 - Construction Excavator, instead of starting with the smaller sets of the wave. Why? Because from the moment Lego released the images for this set, I wanted it real bad. I share my thoughts about the set and what I hope might be the return of construction sets to the City line. Fingers crossed!

First off, the arched arm starting from the excavators cab(where the worker sits and operate) to the top point, is call the Excavator Boom. The arm extending outward/dropping down, is called the Bucket Stick Arm. I haven't finished watching fully your review yet, as I stopped at the 10:13 mark to make these comments. I see where you are going and agree the design as instructed for extending the bucket backward and extending stick arm have constricting limits with where the hydraulic pieces are placed, in their angle usage. I think with some adjustments and maybe some added pieces for modding, the extensions can be closer duplicated to how an excavator actually operates.

More correct naming to add to my list, thank you! :D Not sure if you had the chance to get and build this set, but after looking at it closely, I think that the limit of how far the bucket stick arm can extend and retract has more to do with the length of the hydraulic piece (pin connector perpendicular with extension) + pin connector hub axle piece (element 6484902). Actually, I'm looking at it right now and the pin connector hub is only 3L, but the hydraulic piece seems like it could fit a 4L, too. Interesting. Not sure Lego has that element in a longer version, though... But position wise, adding the hydraulic parts on the side of the boom and stick arms allow for a simpler build given that the pin holes are on the side of the stick arm already. So from a play and ease of build point of view, it makes sense. And like you said, with just a few more pieces, it can be modded and probably improved. I think a lot of people will do it and come up with really nice solutions.

Fabulous set, the excavator functions make it a real play set imo. I agree, it would be fantastic if Lego releases other City construction equipment, for example a cement mixer. Thank you for the extensive review!

Technically, that isn't a steam roller. Steam rollers don't use back tires because the tires deep treads would make tire imprints in the asphalt after being steam flattened moving in a forward motion. So this is in fact what is called a Road Roller, which is used to create a flattened road/surface on loose soil or gravel.

Ah, thanks for pointing that out. It's not easy to keep up with all the naming conventions in english, especially when even Lego gets it wrong :D

If the 19 year pattern releases are the same, then in the 2nd half of this year I think we could see a release for a Big Dump Truck(2005 was a release of a Big Dump Truck, this one is different from the Big Mining Dump Truck). I'm basing this off of 2005 releases of 7248(Excavator) and 7249(XXL Mobile Crane). And, in 2025 maybe we get the High Rise Building Crane again(the original came out in 2006, set 7905)? I would also like to see a Construction Center, but bigger than the original one that came out in the in '81(Public Works Centre).

You know what, I did not see that pattern. That's a really good point. We had those sets in 2005 and so far the pattern seems to add up. I would personally pass on a big, mine style, dump truck. I would personally prefer something similar to a Volvo articulated hauler (like set 7631, which still looks amazing today), or like a Mercedes 3 or 4-axel Arocs dump truck. Other than that, give me a high-track bulldozer or a wheel loader and I'm a happy kiddo!

Definitely waiting for a small discount on this but this is an 11/10 build. I'm impressed it's been so long since we got big construction vehicles and that they came back so strong with them

I couldn't agree more! I don't understand why it took Lego so many years to bring us sets like this. Poor sales in the past? Other aspects of Lego City they wanted to focus more on? I don't know, but like you said, they are back, stronger than ever, and I'm glad.

19:34 scale wise that could work as it looks similar in scale to the real life Cat D11 dozers you see on shows like Gold Rush.

Agreed, bulldozers vary a lot in sizes, and so it's easier to make them fit in whatever scale. You can pretend it's a D6H up to D11, and it'll feel believable. But for that to work, they absolutely need to give us a bulldozer with triangular shape tracks instead of the 2 peg style we've been getting in City. I hope Lego surprises us with a proper one 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
