Hahaha, what? Alright, this was not what I expected to watch today 😀 Nevertheless, thank you for this video. That was a really enjoyable thing to see. I saw that series and it is a complete cringe-fest where nearly every line could make for a meme, but good fun honestly. While I think these aren't bad toys, I certainly understand why they didn't sell as a LEGO product and why they are among the most hated LEGO themes. I mean even Jack Stone was at least clearly made out of LEGO pieces, but this... no, not really. However I don't wanna hate on this theme and to everyone who enjoyed it at the time or nowadays, I don't wanna take any enjoyment away from it. It's much easier to say "well I don't really care for it" than "I hate this with an everburning passion" 😀 I have never looked into this theme, even though I was the right age at the time. But when I compare it to the sets I have sitting here on my desk, which include 6086 Black Knight's Castle and 6281 Pirates Perilous Pitfall, I have to wonder where LEGO got so off-rail there. Anyways: nice video, as always and while I'm not a fan of the theme, I'll still watch through all the LEGO content you do, since I always enjoy your video-style.

Honestly, your content is such a breath of fresh air. I don't really follow any "Lego KZbinrs", mostly because of the indulgence that seems to take priority while the creative soul of Lego gets lost in the blur of what I perceive as rather shallow hype. LEGO might have been onto something with Galidor, but the core problem is...well, the association with LEGO. Even the Bionicle line at least had a very clear, indisputable Technic link, while Galidor is the furthest thing from what people think of when they see the brand today (or at the time) since the wooden duck.

This past year a used Lego store in my area had most of the sets used come in. Only missing the standard versions of Nick and Gorm, the Ooni, Aquart, and Tager. Ended up buying all they had and split a few of them with one of my friends. Definitely one of the best themes to explore with friends. The joy gathered from creating super cursed creatures while waiting for food in a restaurant is not something I've experienced often.

You could dedicate an entire episode to exploring the Kek Powerizer. It's evident that LEGO was really trying to do something innovative on many fronts, but the execution failed and the technology to pull off its goals wasn't quite inexpensive enough. Can even see that the current Super Mario LEGO sets trace its toy-tech lineage to this set.

Galidor reminds me a LOT of another high articulated/interchangeable parts action figure toyline from the early 2000's called Xevoz! They also heavily focused on swapping parts across it's different tribes and species (no aliens, but they had unaugmented humans, heavily augmented cyborgs, humanoid sized insects, physical manifestations of natural elements, various classic horror monsters, etc) and the quality of it's materials were pretty sturdy as well! I've been trying my best to hunt any of my favorite figures in that toyline with no luck, so I should instead focus on trying to snag some of these equally awesome Galidor figures! 😆

Galidor was a great show with neat action figures, but the lego branding hurt its success more than it helped for sure. Plus Lego was competing with itself with Bionicle, even if they were trying to target a different demographic, both fell under the broader action figure category.

Spaceballs memes?! Great editing, visual gags, animation, and info? You’re doing great stuff This leads to an important question: are you a Bionicle fan? That’s a clear next step. Ah, what could have been if they used the Galidor money to make even more Bionicle content... This Galidor thing is very interesting, probably the best pitch for Galidor since JangBricks reviewed the ship. I remember ignoring the theme as a kid Now, I have to confess, I have a nagging feeling that I found a Euripides staff in a bulk used LEGO box and ignored it, thinking it was off brand. I’m not sure why, but the loop at the bottom looks extremely familiar, but I don’t think I have it at this point
@RRSlugger2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I just had to whip out the Spaceballs clips for this one, haha. I am a fan of Bionicle - a BIG fan of the Toa Mata era, a mild fan of the Toa Nuva era, and my appreciation of the series goes down from there. I really didn’t keep up with the story and the “soft reboot” of sorts every year just to sell 6 new Toa got tiresome really fast. The mystery and mystique of the original wave was all but lost by the time we got Toa Hordika, so there just weren’t enough hooks to keep me interested long term. As a video topic, I feel that there are already several creators who have done videos on Bionicle that already cover nearly every aspect of the theme - I really don’t think I have much to add to the conversation that hasn’t already been said better. Also, I don’t think I’m prepared for the roasting that will happen if I step forward and say that I think Galidor is a better toy than Bionicle, hahaha. 😅 They will definitely make some pop up appearances from time to time, when relevant, and I am very glad I finally finished my gold & silver mask collection of the original 6. Beyond that, I’m sorry but I don’t see myself creating much Bionicle content in the future - though who knows!

Every time I see the jet arm pieces, I think that they'd make for a really cool jet build, maybe for a lego transformer to make full use of the joint. Might pick them off bricklink someday if they aren't too pricey.

@@RRSlugger Now that I'm looking at it, yeah, it's a tough color to use. Thankfully there is a 2x3 slope a handful of other supporting pieces, which don't seem too pricey considering how rare the color is. @@RRSlugger I made a prototype build in Bricklink Studio! I'd link pictures, but some channels auto delete comments with links in them, so I'll comment them seperately. The galidor wings can be spread out in robot mode to make it look cooler, or angled forwards to fire the missiles over the shoulder! Also managed to surprisingly make Violet a primary color! Had to get a lot of mileage out of the 2x3 slope and 2x3 plate, which have fascinating origins! The 2x3 plate is exclusive to a single belville set, which unfortunately had only 2 of them, so I might need to cut down on them (Studio says they have an estimated cost of $21 in the build :0), but the slopes were absolutely critical, and they exclusively come from a mcdonalds happy meal polybag, which thankfully, included 4 of them! I'm quite thankful for that polybag :D The build is a bit chunky, in the next iteration I might go for smaller arms with mixel joints to make the jet a bit more streamlined. Also, I had to substitute some pieces because Studio doesn't have them; the Galidor wings, and the Lego Knights Foot piece in Sand Blue (47430). If I had the foot pieces, I probably would have added some transparent orange studs on the bottom to make them look like engines in jet mode. EDIT: Looks like youtube deleted the comment with the imgur link ;w;

At the time I did try and play around with it but being a Bionicle User going to Galador I found it incredibly Frustration set to play along with. What's funny even is that I didn't even think it was LEGO, I thought even that it was some other company that was trying to copy the Technic socket connections for their own action figures. Nice Video!

Thank you for sticking your neck out for Galidor. I really loved the theme as a kid and nearly had every set (probably cause they were all clearance but I was none the wiser). I had nothing but happy memories of it and whatever Lego set out to achieve with it worked on me. So it was weird to come online several years later as an adult and see how everybody sorta dogpiles on it. And more often than not it’s Lego fans older than me who were likely too old for the theme or it’s Lego fans that I know for a fact were too young to have actually experienced Galidor and only trash talk it cause they’re told it was bad. I don’t think it’s just like nostalgia either, I had a bunch of Jack Stone sets as a kid too and I didn’t like those, but Galidor was sweet. It had cool alien designs and robots, and really nice ratcheted joints that just felt quality. I unironically look back on it with equal fondness to my Bionicle sets I had as a kid. I am curious on where the word glinch originated? Maybe it came from something special to Denmark in the old days?

I LOVED Galidor as a kid. I had almost all of the figures, the gameboy game, and I watched the tv show. I never knew it was so poorly received, which is kind of a bummer because I spend hours upon hours playing with my Galidor toys and video game

I found a whole box of Galidor parts at a garage sale, the Ooni was the best figure in my opinion, the non-human/biomechanical/insect features were perfect for the swapping system. I was always interested by the design of Euripides (didn't get that one).

I never got into Galidor. The designs just didn't capture my imagination like the early Bionicle waves did. A lot of them make me think of throwaway Power Rangers monsters. Nevertheless, it was cool to see a video that actually looked at the sets themselves for once. The few videos I've seen on Galidor either just bring it up as a punch line or use it as "Exhibit A" in their rants about how Lego was losing their way and this theme is the prime example of-yadda yadda yadda. While it's clear you're fond of the theme, I appreciate that you gave them all a fair shake highlighting both the good and the bad. It's not for me, but I see that they aren't the abominations people like to make them out to be.
@RRSlugger2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It's one of my "Lego reviewer" pet peeves when someone trashes a set/theme without ever having owned it. Galidor is definitely weird, but you can always tell when a reviewer has actually held the toys in their hand because they always bring up how quality the parts are. I can totally understand if Galidor isn't someone's jam, but I think there are some undeniably great aspects to the toy that even Bionicle never achieved.

@@RRSlugger Well, you did it Slugger. I stumbled on a deal for two Jens in great shape on the cheap and decided to give it a go. I wouldn't had even considered it if it wasn't for this video, but here we are. I'm playing around with them right now and two things come to mind already: 1) You weren't kidding about the quality of these figures. I am incredibly impressed! I feel like this toy handily beats out even modern figures that cost three or four times as much. 2) I am horrified at my propensity for creating utter abominations. They've only been in my hands for just over half an hour and I'm already crafting man-made horrors the likes of which Nikolai Tesla foretold. God have mercy on my soul.

I grew up during the time these were released, bought a lot of the early bionicles, the earliest lego sets I remember getting were the lego studios sets so I was pretty well into Lego when this came out. But the thing is, I can not for the life of me remember seeing any of these for sale, and that's probably because the look and design of them is so un-Lego that I never even thought twice about buying them other than a quick glance while browsing the lego sections. They may be okay as a toy, but even back then there were better non-lego options for action figures.
@RRSlugger Жыл бұрын
It also could be because these sets actually *weren’t* for sale in the Lego sections of toy stores; The Lego Group made a huge effort to put Galidor in the “action figures” isles along with toys like Transformers or GI Joe. Of course, that didn’t work out for them at all and Galidor was already in clearance bins within months of going on sale. 😅

I swear, every single time a company over-stocks in preparation for the high demand a new and unproven franchise will get, they crash and burn. On the other hand, think of every time a hot new product has been understocked… it usually only helps sales rise through the roof

If I can give some constructive criticism, I have zero idea what glinch means. I’m going to google it, but perhaps theme jargon warrants some definitions, especially since it’s so connected (no pun intended) to the play system, let alone the lore
@RRSlugger2 жыл бұрын
For sure! I debated on how much I was going to dive into explaining all the definitions: “wexer“, “Viniculum”, “Boges”, etc. Ultimately I decided against it because it bogged down the script too much, but I did put some great lore resources in the video description. 😊 To my understanding, “glinch” refers to a transmutation energy that Nick is able to tap into to alter his limbs. Gorm is able to utilize this power as well to create his machinations, but he doesn’t have the “midichlorian count” to match Nick, haha.

9:44 "...if you can still call it Lego, though." And there's the root problem. Galidor looks NOTHING like Lego, it just looks like some weird-o generic action figures that just happen to be built to be disassembled and rearranged. Even Bionicle clearly has Technic-compatible design language and can be remixed or used as components of a non-Bionicle build. Galidor? No matter how you rearrange the bits, you're still getting a humanoid action figure as the end result. 11:04 "I hate landfill toys like this, and yes, I'm looking at you, Funko. Get funked." One year later, even Funko agrees with you.

Good video. I have watched a Playlist of the galidor series on KZbin, and I could consider it an unappreciated & under-rated Lego series, even if it did had some flaws. Some of the figures looked alright, but if they really wanted to sell well, I would've preferred them to be made out of the same pieces as the bionicle figures were. However, the TDN Module (the egg) was my most favorite thing in both the show & the toy set, I even have a picture of it as one of my wallpapers. But if there was anything that could've made it better, then I would have liked the ship to have a machine where just like how the cerebro computer amplifies Prof. X's powers, it could have enhanced Nick's glinching powers so that the Egg could have changed any of its parts into any tools or weapons needed to save itself. As for the toy, I would have liked the Egg to be made out of the same Lego pieces used to make the ships from either Star Wars, or the MCU. But these are just my opinion, I only wanted to know what you think of it?
@RRSlugger2 жыл бұрын
That's a really creative idea! Maybe if the show had been able to run longer we would have seen The Egg take on some new abilities using glinch energy. Anything's possible! Thanks for checking out the video!

@@RRSlugger your welcome. You know, another thing about the galidor series that I was curious about was how the word glinch got its name? Any chance it was inspired by something from Denmark just like how Nick & Gorm's names were actually inspired by Danish royalty?

@RRSlugger2 жыл бұрын
It’s honestly pretty doubtful. I love the Toa Mata as much as the next person, but a lot of the mystery (and therefore the draw) of the theme was lost for me with Metru and onwards. Beyond that, there are already some great dedicated Bionicle channels out there and there’s nothing I could do that would be better than what they’ve achieved. Besides, I don’t think my opinion of Galidor > Bionicle is going to be well received by that community, hahaha. 😅
