LEGO HULKBUSTER

The latest edition of the Hulkbuster will be available November 4th and will retail for $550 USD. This set boasts over 4000 pieces and is over 20 inches tall. The build was pretty good and it allows for up to three people to build simultaneously. This model is the largest mech from LEGO to date. The model looks well enough, however it seems to struggle with matching the actual design. Some liberties seem to have been made by the designers that could deter more hardcore fans from purchasing this. The price tag will undoubtedly be the largest barrier for purchasing this set. I would value this set between $400-$420 USD if it were my own money. What are your thoughts on this set?

My wish for this would've been $500-, design it where you'd only need the torso of the buildable figure to put into the chest cavity, then the designer could shorten the torso of the mech and it'll look more inline with the source material. Also, raise the helmet one stud higher and tilt it down slightly makes it a bit more accurate too. Have a NEW lightbrick. One that shines white. Then have TWO exclusive minifigures, Tony here with arm and leg printing and a second exclusive Iron Man figure (Mark 43?), more detailed than the one from the previous large Hulkbuster (the $110 set from a couple years back). Oh, and have every element with decoration printed, especially the plaque. Then we all could say, wow, a premium set with premium elements justifies the $500 a pop set.

I think your final comment on the price is super accurate! 400-450$ would have made sense especially considering the new Razor Crest is priced pretty exactly to the parts. I think they should have lowered the price and added parts to fill in all the gaps around the arms.

The weight comparison was interesting, crazy that this thing is lighter than the BP bust and UCS Gunship despite the higher piece count and price. So it's not even a large average part size causing the poor price/piece ratio in this case.

Interesting review. I went to the Lego store and saw it - it seemed very flimsy, as in lots of pieces would appear to come loose just by holding it. The proportions look all wrong, and I have to ask - was there even any demand for this set. A hard pass for me.

Alex I like how you did a weight comparison. I don’t think that using price per piece is a good metric as not all Lego pieces are the same size or require the same amount of material. A 1x1 stud is not the same value as a 8x16 plate. So I thought this was a good way to look at the value.

I don't know. I think expecting an average of 10 cents per piece is rather fair. It would mean that large pieces like an 8x16 plate are undervalued. But the 1x1 tile would be overvalued. It is just a good across the board average. And you know if you're close to that average then the price point is about where it should be. Heck even using this weight comparison what did we get? A preferred price point of about $415. Which is pretty darn close to that 10 cent average. It's not perfect. Nor do I think it should be the end all be all of determining the value of a Lego set. After all things like light bricks, motors, and even gold lacquer definitely cost more. But it is an easy way to get a good quick comparison of most sets.

Great video as usual Alex. Your comparison method might be oversimplified, but still very valid I think. That difference is crazy. I get that Lego at some point needs to raise prices because of inflation…..what company that sells commodities doesn’t, but I think Lego is making some mistakes. Time will tell if they make some kid of correction. Sadly, I will not be buying this unless it goes on a major discount somewhere. Cheers.

For someone like me who collect both LEGO and high end action figures and has already bought the 1/6 Hot Toys version and the 1/12 Comicave version (both diecast figures with near 100% accuracy)... And now looking at the LEGO version and the LEGO price... my first impression, I was impressed initially seeing the leaked photo! However, after looking at it closer I have zero interest in getting it, especially now after watched a few review videos. I must say the design of this LEGO one is so poorly executed for its price and size... for me to change my mind, LEGO would need to anodize the red bricks to a shiny red... then I think it will attract more adult buyers

The fact that there are stickers, the wrong colour brick lights and completely wrong sizing for the torso is a joke at this price. I love the justifying of price for the inclusion of "gold pieces" 🤣 my God, plastic costs Lego peanuts to produce, real value of those 4k bricks is around 5$ to 10$. Look.. from a ucs like set.. and the price point.. we expect more quality! More detail! Because lego showed us that they can do that at these high price points. This set😅 the quality and lack of detail belongs more to the 200 range lego sets.. it lacks way to much detail! And it’s just not accurate at all. That’s fine! If they asked 300. Not 550.. for 550 I expect more detail and better accuracy in the design.

I can actually answer the sticker question. When you asked why they would put a printed face and not a printed plaque, it would make sense to put a printed face because if you tried to put a sticker on, it would be very difficult to get it perfectly centered and evenly placed. But with the plaque it won’t really matter weather its perfect or not.

This guy is so very gappy. You can look through at so many spots. Also, should not have any stickers. With such a build, everything has to be a print, as nobody seriously will take this expensive model apart again. Regarding the model aspect: as Lego seems to try being a modelmaking brickbuilding company, they should get the proportions and details right. Also, I think at this price, they could have thrown in the set of the figure which is supposed to go inside into the box. But they chose not to. Oh well. Thusly, IMO, this set is not worth the hefty price tag.

Don't forget even doing the weight of the bricks still doesn't get the proper price comparisons. Any gold elements can raise the price especially if they're gold recolors of elements not usually in gold but it's only one part of it. - Add in the light bricks (3 of them), the glow in the dark tiles, that recolored gold windscreen would cost alot, that new recolored fresnel lens, small and large gears, etc. Not justifying the price but all those things add up. Oh and the printed dome, that definitely cost. Then add in Disney's license, inflation across the board and Lego knowing this is a premium probably tacked on an additional $50 for the collectors that have the disposable income, Christmas coming, etc. They all look at their marketing for this. We all forget licensing, advertising for it, now the past years high inflation, etc. All baked into the price.

There are several metrics that go into pricing. - number of pieces - size of pieces (or total weight) - printed pieces - dual molded pieces - unique (non-generic) pieces - drum lacquered pieces - minifigures (torso consists of 5 pieces and legs of 3 pieces to be assembled in factory) - electronics (motors, lights, programmability) - licensing fees And recently the overall price increase to compensate for supply problems and inflation.

As a business student who has been a lifelong Lego fan I have no idea what Lego is doing. I think I would honestly do a much better job creating new set ideas that people actually want and giving them price points that people could actually afford. If they had people who actually understood their customer base they could actually release products their fans would enjoy. This is the most ridiculous set I’ve ever seen Lego create and anyone who buys this would probably be better off burning their money or giving it away.

Now I know which Lego review channel to avoid in the future. It was a very obvious and futile attempt to gloss over all the shortcomings of this set and trying to justify its existence. I can understand some people in minority like the reviewer would like this set but as a professional (almost) reviewer of Lego sets on youtube, what about an objective review of it's durability, an objective comparison of the design of this set with the actual Mark 44 Hulkbuster this set is based upon, what about the additional 40$ required to buy the 76206 set around which this set is designed ?. How can a set this flawed be justified even for a price 400-420 dollars as the reviewer claims. At the end of the day a bad set is just a bad set, doesn't matter if it's worth 50$ or 500.

Somehow I can't bring myself to like any Marvel set, maybe with the exception of the helicarrier. The Daily Bugle is too bland looking and too fragile, though I like all the minifigs. The Sanctum Santorum feels poorly proportioned. The Avengers Tower too small. I love other movie themed sets. The Delorean, Ecto-1, Original trilogy Star Wars UCS sets (not interested in the prequels or sequels), Ghostbusters headquarters, Batmobile, Batwing, Tumbler, Home Alone, and even TV 'sets' like Seinfeld and Central Perk. I'm not a fan of the Harry Potter movies, but they do make some awesome sets that I'd be interested in like Hogwarts, the Hogwarts Express, and the Harry Potter Icons set with Hedwig. I don't know what it is about the Marvel sets that they just can't grab my imagination. Maybe it's a nostalgia thing. The other movies were from my childhood.

What a dud! Though you got it from Lego for free, so the $550 price tag won't bother you, nor the fact that you have to spend another $40 to finish the product. In a long line of abysmally bad Lego sets, this is another "highlight". Wow, this company is really going to the dogs. You should also have to visually notify your audience that you are being sponsored by Lego and are basically sold to them. This is a commercial and I am not sure that you follow KZbin's guidelines there.

Thanks for your comment and perspective. While LEGO provides me some sets for review, the review is my own. They do require that I make mention it was given to me for this purpose. There are close to 100 communities (mainly KZbin) out there who receive LEGO sets in advance for review purposes. As for the set, I do agree it is quite a dud. I was pretty sure I mentioned I could not recommend it for the price. LEGO will likely need to discount this to see it actually move off the shelf. In fact, they already ran a deep discount on it earlier this year. As for the KZbin guidelines, you have me puzzled. There are millions of product reviews out there and many are provided free of charge.
