We need more alt builds designed by Lego that look as good if not better than the normal set!
@RogueBagel15 күн бұрын
As a kid in the 80s, I loved trying to figure out the alt builds! No instructions were given, so it was up to the builder to figure it out or design their own creations!
@LegoTFGuy16 күн бұрын
Really cool that it just rebuilds the center portion and the existing other modules attach! Gives it the feel that the cockpit and such are generic modules that connect to different bodies that have specific uses.
@anneliseolsen689615 күн бұрын
That interchangeability is the main gimmick of BlackTron 2 sets. Some of the sets, notably the larger flyers, had bulbous cockpits that could be interchanged across sets. So it's nice to see that Lego included that feature in this set.
@FlymanMS16 күн бұрын
Motorised version of it would look hilarious when shuffling its feet.

You just blew my mind with the alternate flyer coming off the legs! It looks so good. Might be my favorite part of the set.

Same. That's the best part of either model! So of course Lego ignored it.

Really love this B model! That's what is so cool about the modularity of this set: all the potential it has! I'm really inspired to try building my own module for it and expend my choices. I loved the galaxy explorer, and it definitely is a better set overall, but I feel this one opens more door for imagination and play potential. Personally, I feel it was a better choice to go for modularity than a closed interior. Yes, the cargo hold was nice in the original renegade, but this set offers you the possibilty to make it even more cool with the drop feature! Anyway, I can't wait to receive my 2 copies and start building. Thank you for the reviews, Jang!

I think this whole set actually looks best when you have both the ship and the mech, rover and small mech ALL on display together. That’s when it really looks like a fleet of related transports and equipment that are on a mission together.
@SwiftpawWolffox15 күн бұрын
I like how this uses the same cockpit and modules, it just rebuilds the center fuselage into a walker mech, another reflection of how these classic space sets had all the interconnecting components. And it actually makes an interesting smaller craft without the legs. It resembles the Alienator, but I do recall there being a mech alt build on the back of the original's box as well, so this is like combining the two concepts.

When I saw those two 1x2 slope bricks with printed red and yellow buttons in small mech... man I just got back to '98 and small sets that I had as a 7,8 year old kid trying to make something bigger. Still using that piece in modern mocks out of amazing nostalgia. Thanks Jang!
@cooperv.608313 күн бұрын
That final shot of all of them together... oh man, they honestly look so cool! Wasn't born when blacktron came out and never had any of the sets assembled but if I can find a good sale I think I may have to get 2

@Benjamin011915 күн бұрын
I like that classic walker design. Blacktron II had a walker with that same leg movement as well. Oh, your option of removing the top portion to be a dedicated flyer is great. That is indeed a lot of leftover parts. But, you can do stuff with those parts, as you mentioned.
@TheRichrocker14 күн бұрын
It's funny: As soon as I've seen this, I thought about modifying the top section to use it as its own spaceship without the legs. Nice that it is even an intended or unintended bonus feature!
@truntbeefwell978415 күн бұрын
Ooh, this has the size and complexity the Alienator holds in my mind. I recently saw a original one IRL, and it is so much tinier and simpler than I remembered from my childhood.

I love when alternate builds leave plenty of pieces to customize or make side builds with.
@TheStugbit15 күн бұрын
That top part separated from the legs looks like quite a great space ship. Had Lego put a little bit more effort when designing this, the alternative model would perhaps look as good as the main one. For those who have the money, they could easy buy two sets of this space ship and build everything. The only thing that would be missing is a space base on the moon like they used to have.
@mattsully53326 күн бұрын
I love the mini walker, and the ship part of this alternate build. I agree with you that I don't really like the feet part very much. Love the nostalgia, I'm going to have to go find my original and buy the new renegade to have both setup somewhere in my house.

Man I wasn't impressed with the A model, but I may just have to buy it for this version!

I think they should have also rebuilt the cockpit using the other windshield piece. It looks weird as it is, this very sleek aerodynamic craft on two giant clunky legs
@danth7815 күн бұрын
Agreed. Honestly, I think this is the most poorly designed Icons set ever. The Galaxy Explorer was a grand slam. The Renegade, though, looks like an average MOC, and the alt build isn't much better.

Thanx for review! I think Lego did a good strategic move with the B model. On one side it's an extra benefit for Lego fans and on the other side a lot of people will buy 2 sets just to be able to build both simultaneously - like me... 😀 Enjoy the set! 😊

I'd love to see any mods you make to the Renegade. I do like the use of the flap to mimic the smaller wedge, but I'd like to see if some parts could be added under the wedge to make it look less flat. I plan on building a custom pod for the Renegade once I get it.
@gdekort15 күн бұрын

It’s funny, I was originally attracted to this set because of the asymmetric build (I dig asymmetry, it’s very cool to me, ever since I first laid eyes on the Lamborghini Reventon), but the symmetrical ship build that sits on top of walker legs looks really good when it’s separated. Thanks for the review, as always. EDIT: I just noticed how good the little mech looks…gives me big Aliens vibes. Ready to push the Xenomorph out the airlock.

Felt like I was at the optometrist in the middle section, haha; "does this help or does this hurt?" Thanks for the review! The model without the front cockpit on looks like the Mantis from Halo, I kind of like it a little more than the main build
@ScottSteubing13 күн бұрын
I like this alt built better than the base model. Which makes sense as the original Alienator was the only Blacktron set to catch my eye back in the day. I am going to seriously consider getting this set now.
@ismaelreyna539915 күн бұрын
Alternate flyer is so much cooler. All you need to do is use longer technic axles instead of pins as the connection points so lifting off the ship is easier.
@jacobe194214 күн бұрын
Those are some nice extra parts to make back modules for the alienator that will help balance it out too... I do think they should make the instruction in paper though.
@BookieSwish15 күн бұрын
I'd say the set is definitely worth it. I love versatility of all the pieces, and who doesn't love extra bricks?
@MaxRawhide14 күн бұрын
I think this video convinced me to get this set. The Explorer was a must buy because that was my childhood Lego Space, but Blacktron was well after I moved on from Lego. As such although I in general like the look of the set, there wasn't a real interest. But this altbuilt and more specifically the ability to split it apart and use it as a spaceship on it's own, lures me in. Because I really like the look of it as a spaceship when removed from its legs.
@TomBrickBuilder15 күн бұрын
The airplane with legs looks so funny!
@McPilch9 күн бұрын
So tempting to get TWO sets 😂 Only gripe with the main walker mech thing.. the lights on the legs section point off diagonally... but probably easy enough to attach elsewhere so they remain facing straight ahead.
@Thinginator12 күн бұрын
I think it'd look great to build an alternate cockpit module with a vertical windscreen - would address some of the front-heaviness issue and still look very appropriate for a mech, also potentially even more like the original Alienator set since that one strikes me as a bit more vertical. Wouldn't even look out of place, as plenty of classic space sets used vertical windscreens! I'd also love to see an alternate rover build made with the leftover pieces plus the pieces of the tiny side-build mech, as the tiny mech is okay but doesn't really do it for me, and I just really like rovers lol. I can't wait to see what kinds of alternate Blacktron models people come up with for this set in general! Would love to buy that set and do so myself if I hadn't just bought a lot of LEGO already lol.

I love Blacktron 1, with the color scheme and the menacing looking minifigs. But even as a kid I didn't like the renegade (which I didn't own and didn't want as a kid), so I was a little bit on the fence about this new model. I do have the original alienator, and even back then I thought the movement was a bit dumb. So I was a bit on the fence of this alternate build. But seeing that the top section of the alternate build is basically a really cool spaceship, I'm certainly going to get one and build that.
@davidsimmons68127 күн бұрын
It's odd that they didn't seek to balance the top assembly. Perhaps that wasn't possible? I haven't made the alt build yet, but I bought two Renegades, so I'll be putting this together soon and seeing what I can "improve!" LOVE that the mech is being driven by the robot!

I would probably use all the extra parts and scrap the legs on the walker, using all those to build a service gantry for the fighter style flyer as well as a hangar transport vehicle using those wheels. This version of the build has so much room for imaginative play in all sorts of forms, where I don't get the same vibe when looking at the A model, which has minimal interior space and too many figures with nowhere to go. It doesn't feel like a mother ship, but feels too large to be a fighter, and doesn't have enough instrument panels to be a research vessel. The A model is just in an awkward space of being a remake without an obvious function, which is fine for nostalgia but makes imaginative play difficult. This B model fixes all of those issues for me, especially when ditching the legs.

I really was hoping to get some idea of how easy it is to convert from the built Renegade set to this one. The builder app very unfortunately doesn't seem to give instructions about this.
