I have been a fan of Dune since I played the early video games based on the books. Ornithopter was always my favorite. I can wait to get hold of this. Planning on getting 2 to build, one for home, one for work. I will modify the second by swapping out the colored pins and adding tiles to smooth out the appearance.

This set really reminds me how Technic used to be - a skeletal shell made out of studded Technic beams using mainly system techniques and mechanisms inside. It is a perfect blend of System and Technic, was like a blast from the past for me and one of the best building experiences I ever had with Lego, even though the wing assemblies got little tiring, having to build them 8 times.
@RJWaynerium5 ай бұрын
Yeah modern technic systems are a shell of what they used to be. We had the pneumatic kit and the older systems growing up, that was pinnacle

I would love for this to be a landmark in Lego's future portfolio instead of an exception. IMO, 99% of Lego prototypes should start with some kind of toy function in a vacuum and only once it's satisfying to manipulate is it turned into a characteristic object or scene.

Personally, as a Dune universe fan, I don't understand the complaints about the red & blue colored pieces - in fact, I find them quite fitting from worldbuilding point of view. An ornithopther, in Dune, is a superbly functional and technical machine, that must work well in extremely harsh conditions of the desert planet Arrakis. As such, I think of it as a "flying tractor", or maybe even more accurately a "flying quad bike" - a vehicle that has to quickly and reliably get you in, and get you out JUST FREAKING NOW when shit hits the fan... I mean, when a sandworm hits the spice harvester... If you look up close at an agricultural or otherwise industrial vehicle or machine (and even on any regular airplane), I imagine you would see a heck-ton of various crazy colors, as long as it makes sense from a utilitarian point of view. I mean, function over form all the way; any "pretty color scheme" being fine and dandy, as long as it does not interfere with practical purposes - especially so in case of a machine for extreme conditions. As such, I imagine the crazy colors making a lot of sense on structurally critical elements, like important axles. Given that, imagining myself for a moment as a field engineer in Dune universe, I would honestly seriously consider actually replacing many black axles in selected places with red ones in such a machine - if that could help me quickly assess its wear and tear and spot any issues, oil leaks, dents and cracks on the critical parts. It might even make the vehicle slightly more expensive, to have those pieces in such an extravagant color, but if the owner cares about the health and wellbeing of the crew - especially when he might be one of them sometimes - I believe they'd gladly pay the comparably small premium for that. With that said, I'm quite very curious if the amazing Lego engineer guy behind this creation might possibly say something similar when you get a chance to ask him! :D

I for one was fascinated by the process while building next elements from following bags, I'm excited to see seemingly chaotic and random bricks coming together to crate a truly unique mechanisms. The moment I finally saw that push lever moving the wings the way they do, it was mesmerizing. The model now proudly stands on a shelf and since it's a play model I do take it for a short flight now and then :D

I just finished building my Lego Orinithopter and I love the look. I’m a fan of Dune and the moment I saw this was being released I wanted one. I hit the Lego store in Tokyo for the express purpose of getting one, thankfully they had two. My feeling is that this is a great looking and very sturdy build but there are a few detractions. First, the tolerances for the mechanism for the wings is very narrow, get it slightly wrong and it doesn’t work as it should, I may rebuild mine at some point to address this issue. Next, the red ball joints are a little off putting but unless I rebuild it I will live with them. I wish Lego had considered changing these to black. Third, I’m considering getting some smooth top tiles to add to the outside of the fuselage, the exposed nubs bug me a bit. Lastly, I would have liked some sort of display base for the mini-figures but I guess I can get a plate for that later. On the whole, this was a great build but one that should be done with patience, don’t rush through the wing mechanism build, and by those that have experience with intricate builds. I love this Lego Ornithopter and hope they release one with an interior we can see. I enjoyed the build and the end result. Excellent points in your video. I agree with you!
@stevenwilliams790510 ай бұрын
Got tired of the red ball joints and felt I needed to change them to black. Well, not an easy job without tearing the build apart but I got most of them changed to black. Then I thought “hmmm, I can make another modification to this” so I got some smooth top plates and started to cover the exposed brick studs. I had enough to do most of one side but still need more to do the other. Now I have to do the other side. I like the smoother look and I’m thinking of another modification to this one. Still not pleased with the wing flapping mechanism, still not moving as I have seen in videos, so I may tear this build apart and redo it at some point in the future. However, I still think this is a wonderful Lego build. Perfection….no, but darn near. I’m hoping Lego offers the second more ‘sporty’ Ornithopter in the future. I love that version too.

Yes, it was quite tricky and I had actually made a small mistake with the landing gear mechanism, which mean't I had to pull bit's of it apart and problem solve. I sorted it out in the end. I do think some people who wanted an accurate model might have a problem with the non circular look the connection between the wings and fuselage. For that I understand if you have a problem due to it looking less clean, but I honestly don't mind that. And I honestly think it will not be hard to mode it by your liking. I think it would have been great if it also had the cockpit of the older model of the Ornithopter from the movie and replace it whenever you like, but that's just a minor thing. By older model I mean the vehicle that Paul and Jessica used to escape in the movie
@goodial11 ай бұрын
In general I think the model is really great! my two issues are however 1. the price (12 cents per piece, I guess more than 10 is the unfortunate new standard). 2. the massive use of unfitting colours not just during the build, but still visible when finished. I don't see why an 18+ 165$ Lego build has such bright red pins amongst others. I mean if they wanted to use other colours, the could've also gone with more brown or beige ones to fit the sand idea of the vehicle's origins, but red and blue is just ridiculous

I love this set! I don’t get the complaints coming from some (mostly system builders) that it was difficult to build! It was an easy build for me, didn’t take long at all! Didn’t find any of the builds or connections tricky at all! And the result is amazing! Plus I sold the minifigures (I don’t collect them) so the set went from being kinda pricey to an absolute bargain! 😂 Best set of the year IMHO! 11:55 I agree with you! Perfect mix of form and function! I love technic sets and their functionality but so often their form goes out the window! The super cars are really an exception to this but they’re still not quite right looking! This balances both perfectly! And I’m sure plenty of people will find ways of improving the looks and making it more accurate to the way it looks on screen! That is much easier than trying to add mechanical functions like the wing movement and landing gear to a more accurate looking but whole system built (or at least system focused) set!
