Exploring LEGO Island in VR!

Welcome to Lego Island! This project was a huge undertaking. I was inspired by the video of ‪@reubs‬ . They are working on a remake of the game and that got me thinking about how we can experience Lego Island in an interesting way. So that's where 360/VR came in to play.
First I had to extract the island mesh from the original game. It was quite surreal working with 3D models from the 90s. I spent so much time on that island and to see the inner workings was amazing. When the island was in place, I had to build all of the buildings and vehicles from the game. It was quite difficult the build everything accurately, so the keen viewer will spot some mistakes. After building the island, the textures for the faces and torso had to be made. Then it was time to animate! I wanted to show the most recognizable characters from the game. I couldn't do too many, because then the video would take months to make. Also balancing the interactions and the hidden helicopter pieces was tricky. The final render took multiple days to finish. It's the most ambitious project I've done on this channel and I'm quite proud of it. I hope you will like it and that the video brings back some great memories. 😄

This makes me wish there was more Lego stuff in VRChat. Like I saw a video of a VRChat map of L1 and i've seen VRChat models of the characters from Ninjago and Monkie Kid. I know VRChat can get a bit crazy and sometimes rude like swearing and stuff but I don't care! I'd die of happiness to see Basil or Cedric in VRChat.

@@StudframeAnimations Trust me i've never done VRChat either (I don't even have a headset) but i've watched a ton of videos on them. Since they're are quite funny to watch. I've mainly watched Sonic and FNAF related ones.

Watching these in my computer was a super fun experience. However these 360 LEGO videos need to be re-rendered at a much higher frame rate for VR. I just watch both from a Meta Quest 3 headset and the experience was quite dizzying. The camera moves fastest in the LEGO Island 2 video and I watched that one second, so it made me the dizziest. However walking by close walls, like the mountain’s was probably the most jarring due to its proximity. Hope you’ve kept the original, because this deserves a cut with a higher frame rate.

@@Cuperino Thanks for letting me know! I don’t have a VR headset so I have no idea what the video is like on it. It plays well on the computer and mobile which is what I had in mind while making it. Would love to make it higher framerate. It’s possible, however the rendertime was already multiple days. Making it 60fps or even 90 fps would take forever. 😜

@@CaptainPlums Ohh right, I don’t have plans to release it to the public. But everything I’ve done here, you can do too. The island mesh is from the game itself, using an extractor. For the buildings: I built every building (apart from the Information Center, which I could find in the library) in Studio. There are some really good reference photos out there from other people who have built them. I just copied those. Good luck! 😁

I used it because as far as I know the skateboard used in-game doesn't exist in real life. And because all the buildings/vehicles are made using actual Lego pieces, I thought it would be best to use an existing skateboard as well. But I do agree with you that the in-game skateboard looks beter! 😁
