Thanks for the review Jang! As someone who loves mechs of all varieties, I do applaud Lego for managing to build such an incredibly large model and make it stand tall on its own feet. The real killer for me is the price, and that has as much to do with how objectively expensive it is as the relatively poor price-per-piece ratio. This is not something that I could afford as a casual Marvel fan and I'm sure a lot of people would feel similar about this set. The decision to accommodate the buildable Iron Man figure was definitely the wrong one. An idea that sounded cool in the conference room perhaps, but definitely contributed to the underachievement of this Hulkbuster set that simply needs to be perfect in order to sell.

i dont really get the torso being the biggest issues - for me when comparing to the real thing or the hot toys model is the shoulders, waist, legs and ankles are all VERY wrong with most being far to skinny - i think if it wasnt meant to be the hulkbuster it would be a pretty amazing mech

@biodude152 жыл бұрын
Comparing it to the picture at 3:47, here's what I see: The midriff section where it curves into the waist before jutting out at the hips, just isn't there in the original There should be armor under the shoulder pauldrons, which should point down along the bicep, and themselves should stick up further The shins don't have plating that covers the ankles The pecs are too tall, and the moving the arc reactor with them should help fix where it sits, though relative to the hips, it sits at an appropriate height The feet look a bit too long. The pauldrons might be able to be fixed if you remove the cross axle and connect them directly to the shoulder, and move the armor up a stud. That would give room to have a small amount of plates cover the upper shoulder. The pecs and midriff would require major changes to the build Adding plates to the sides of the shins might help, though they would need to wrap around a bit to cover the front of the ankles Shortening the feet may cause stability issues.

This set just baffles me... I hate the "who asked for this" comments normally, but here I think this comment has a point. Who is this made for? Do Lego genuinely believe people are willing to shell out $550 for a huge Hulkbuster mech that is not accurate to the film, limited articulation that limits displayability, and 5x the price of other much more compact but better designed mechs? I hate how so many hard-core lego fans will slam designers online for being 'lazy' or 'not caring', from what I've seen of Lego designers, they are incredibly passionate and dedicated to what they do, and work so hard to make each model fun to build and play with. But here? I just don't get how this went so wrong...
@davisjaeger74332 жыл бұрын
I think sets like this are designed primarily for Lego fans who also happen to like marvel or iron man. The primary selling point is a large Lego set that looks cool, not movie accuracy. The building experience is arguably the most important part, so comparing it to a solid display figure it’s t really fair.

I'm not an entitled Lego buyer either (I'll be honest, they realllly annoy me) but I must say, I was surprised by the complete lack of leg articulation. If Lego had made a figure this big and it could pose, that would be some feat. But this is just a static display piece. I'm not sure what to think of it. I understand the building process may have been great, but for me their needs to be value after its built too.

it just looks like an infant. the legs are too thin and connect too far apart, and the bolbous shape is reminiscent of a diaper. together with the thin ankles... it's an ironbaby suit
@kibavee32952 жыл бұрын
Its very strange to me that they devoted such a large amount of resources on a play feature like that on a static display piece, especially at the cost of its overall look. And for the $40 extra set you need for this one, they should have either thrown one in with this guy, or made a special exclusive printed head for the $40 figure included
@Howlox2 жыл бұрын
"especially at the cost of its overall look". As Jang said, the space for the $40 dollar is not what makes the outside look bad. There was the potential to design it accurate around that space, and I have to agree.
@isaachunsberger24842 жыл бұрын
In my opinion i think this honestly might be the worst set ever. There are so many reasons that i say that. For one, it looks extremely over prices, even by the price hike standards. The details and proportions are horribly off. Ive watched reviews that talked about small details falling off with the slightest movement. The gaps on this build are insane, and im saying that as someone who is a lot less picky than other LEGO fans. The Tony stark minifigure looks like it came from a $10 juniors set. The light bricks are orange rather than blue. There was a UCS style hulkbuster before, which wasn't that popular to begin with, so they decided to sell one 4x the price. This is the largest Marvel set ever, and they decided to design it around the idea of putting the Iron man figure inside. That $40 Iron man set was one of the worst sets in the wave, so the designed a $550 set to help make a $40 shelf warming set more appealing. Perhaps the biggest issue with this set is what it isn't. This set could've been so many other things, a Helicarrier, X mansion, Avengers tower. Literally no one was asking for a hulkbuster. I know calling this the worse set ever might be harsh, but it checks so many boxes
@gumbycat52262 жыл бұрын
I think the set would be a whole lot better if it had posable legs because then I could possibly have it sit on a bookshelf whereas it would be quite hard for me to find a place for it in my home. When you quote price, it's always worth remembering that some countries, like Australia, have the sales tax added in whereas in other countries, like Canada and the USA, the price is before sales tax. People think that Lego charges more in Australia (where I live) but it is often more expensive in the USA when you add the tax.

We just need to wait for someone to rebuild it fully to look more movie accurate, fixing proportions, gaps etc (even if that mean no space for smaller figure inside), and post instructions on rebrickable. I think something like that could even help sell more of these sets (more as box with parts for 550 to build big Hulkbuster, just not the one from the box).

I think this is unacceptable as far as quality and gimmicks go. Casual fan, its badly proportioned. I dont care for marvel that much, the Hulkbuster is pretty much the only thing I really enjoy, and it is sad to see it get such a huge set, only for it to fail so spectacularly. I could accept it if it was at a better price, 300 or less. Not for 550, plus 50 for its companion set. Torso is too tall and rendered wrong, way to boxy body, and way to much empty space not covered up. They could have bundled this with the buildable iron man, shrunk the main build down an inch or so to fix the proportion and give spare parts for the gaps. There is no reason they could have not truncated the frame a bit to let the detail hang off of it so we dont see the frame. Or the fact they refused to put a regular white LED in the light brick. I guess you can just use some technic lights, but they discontinued power functions and have no alternatives! This set really needed some more work and development, and I think it got rushed for christmas. The fact it has the gimmick shows it was in development atleast since buildable iron man was released. I would love to take it for 300, but its MSRP is absurd, and it being Lego store only just hinders it so much. Walmart had done a great job discounting other (Non-IP) Lego sets, and I think they could have actually made this sold if it was on their shelves. I dont see this as anything more than another huge set for Lego stores to display in their windows to drag people into stores. For this set, I would have expected limited poseability, with a focus on detail and shaping. It messes up proportions, has lots of gaps and hollow space, exposed frame elements. And literally no detail on the inside. With several features like light bricks badly integrated, as wrong of a color as you could get, and skimped detail on places that dont even do anything, like the ankles. Im sure someone can do a mod for this with its parts and make a much better build, but I would need to see that build and its instructions before considering buying this set at this price. When you ask who this set is for, probably me. I love Lego, and I love *_BIG_* Lego. Especially mechs. I want to build Lego mechs this scale, and it would be perfect if its flaws and price werent so off-putting. This is practically a mecha starter kit, begging to be redesigned or turned into something else, like Crimson Typhoon from Pacific Rim. I would love to see more of this from lego, just executed better.

I think the worst part about this set is that it looks like the chest and shoulders could have been done better but for some reason it wasn't. I also don't feel like the figure inside is the problem. The top just looks unfinished, like they had a specific piece count that they couldn't go over and had to make do with limited parts.

you know, i actually wonder how worthwhile the skeleton or basis of this set is, to make other types of robot character models. like imagine a gundam, transformer, or battletech model based off this. i'd certainly get an ATLAS set for one!

I don't understand what this set is supposed to be. The light bricks might as well not even be there if they can't all light up at the same time. The Iron man figure inside is interesting but that will get old in two minutes. If the gimmick is the size then you should just get the UCS Falcon... Compared to all of the Nintendo adult sets they all have very interesting gimmicks for a quarter of the price. You show this thing to someone and there's just no wow factor here. You look at it, turn on the yellow lights, move the arms and you walk away.

If I was not a super fan of Marvel movies, especially those in the Avengers chronology and theme, but i knew about Iron Man and, subsequently, the Hulkbuster, i would absolutely be impressed by this. It's a fantastic set and an awesome conversation starter especially in the world of MCU fans. But, it is inaccurate to the actual thing it's based on and the gaps are wrong, and for $550?? I would personally feel the need to put another $150+ to modify it and makes it screen accurate. It really is an awesome set and very impressive. Thank you Jang for reviewing it!!

The pauldron piece should've been made bigger (and shaped correctly..) to cover more of the gap, but remained hollow to keep the articulation to the arm piece could kind of slide inside it or at the furthest angle it could still be covering nearly to the first arm piece... Then making all of the legs thicker I think just these 2 changes would've made this model 100 percent better.. still not perfect but as it is now it just look like a little too many things were comprised or just wrong..

This set is really not doing it for me. The impressive size doesn't make up for gaps and inaccuracies in design. I think this set would've been better off much shorter, with the part count going toward a more movie accurate facade and more solid build. I think the gimmick is the main issue here, it necessitates the larger build with gaps and adds an extra $50 (in canada) on top of an already very expensive set. Losing this functionality and having an Iron Man helmet and torso built into the mech would've been a much better alternative. Call me captain hindsight I suppose, I just think this set leaves alot to be desired. I don't know if the compatibility with the action figure was a mandate from Lego or the designers idea, but either way this functionality seems to be the root of alot of the issues with this set in terms of the necessary scale and design compromises. Sorry for rambling, I just wanted to get my two cents out there. Great video as always Jang, you're easily my favourite Lego reviewer out there.

It's awesome that the build process is fun, but ultimately it's designed as display piece and it fails at that. 500 dollars for incorrect proportions, large gaps, and for the love of God, Lego, make gray or black technic pins instead of blue ones. If someone is paying 500+ dollars, they're probably an advanced builder and don't need blue pins, and even if they're not and they have to re-do a step, at least the look of the final product will be worth it.

At first glance it looks mighty impressive, and some parts survive close scrutiny, but too many parts indeed don't. That could have been somewhat forgivable if it was amazing value, but it's rather the opposite. Very flawed model at an absurd price. For this much money I'd expect something pretty close to perfect. This just isn't. And sure, collectible figures can be very expensive indeed, but those are A) so much better, and B) are much more limited production, hand-finished products. I get why those are so expensive. Here we're talking about a mass produced set mostly made from very common (therefore cheap) pieces. And a big sticker sheet. It's just not the same.

I wish we got more 30$ - 50$ price range range good sets instead of these meh behemoth sets. LEGO are going for prestige these days in terms of their ability to design structurally amazing tall and wide builds, when in fact I think most AFOLs are more interested in LEGO as a "premium toys for collectors" than "advanced display models for super rich fans".
