Hey Lego People!
OK, after much deliberation and staring and trying to come to terms and love it, something still was not sitting right in my heart in my city - and thats it - it was the roads - I HATE THEM! I love my MILS and all the possibilities they bring - but when it comes to these roads - I can't stand them! It's time for a change! Not sure what that will be yet - but anything will be better in my eyes, than what I have now!
Thanks for watching - hope you enjoyed, always - let me know what you think! and as always - check out my otther awesome LEGO worlds -

The reasons why mils is so common, is because 1. Very sturdy and strong base 2. Has lots of depth which allows lots of details like lower extensions of ground like ponds and swimming pools, underground basements etc. and 3. Personally I find mils plates fun to build.

Mils were for the following: 1. The point of them was to hide lighting/wires 2. Connect the plates if moving around a lot 3. The older sets didnt connect and plates would fall off easy moving them 4. Finally make things "Realistic" with water/lakes If your not doing any of these then it seems its not for you and thats ok.

Thing is buy a kid 2 of the city sets, the shopping street and the house and buy the kid 2 sets of the new road plates and the kid has infinite possibilities to combine everything. Look at the city center and the shopping street builds both are modular already. With each building being a seperate unit. Kids can do everything with the new system. While the old would be on 2/3 base plates and you had to buy multiple packs of road plates to give some length of road. Now everything is smaller but gives more space and possibilities. And honestly I don't give a damn about adult collectors in this regard. This new system is genius for little children. Perhaps they should add a set with a new curve piece. Easy to make for Lego. Then it's done.

As someone who has been building for thirty plus years now, I appreciate your opinion but I have to respectfully disagree with most of what you have said about the new road pieces. I feel like they are incredibly versatile. Yes, the roads aren't pre-made and it takes some effort to work with them to make them the way that you want them, but... that's sort of the point of building with LEGO. The thing about old road plates is that they are still available on the secondary market... and you can use the old road plates with MILs buildings. Jang Bricks even did a pretty comprehensive video on how to incorporate both pretty cleanly.

Thanks for the great video. I completely agree that there is no need to have 32 x 32 roads. I started simply putting the new road plates on 16 *16 base plates. However I did want to be able to connect to my mils buildings with technic pins so I have changed to the quite rare but findable 18 * 16 base plates, this gives me 1 stud width each side of the new road plate to incorporate technic bricks and a curb between pavement and road.

I'm one of the guys buying into the whole new system you have there. Mainly because it has been a dream to wire everything up to light up my city AND, with the extended sidewalks iv been adding parking spaces, bus stops, etc. I've been able to pack in and make areas looks far more dense and packed with lego then ever before

9:45 - "how do you make a curve? now, I want a curve. I don't want to have to have 90 degree turns everywhere in my city." I completely agree! The new road would be great if they somehow implemented curve sections too. It's fine for a lot of US style cities because they use a lot of grid layout. It's way more advanced to make your own custom curves as isn't so straight forward and the results aren't always the greatest.

@@mybricksandme6152 well I don’t need the MILS, I already built some city stuff on regular plates. I have the Daily Bugle on the base plate it came with. I built Freddy FazBear’s Pizza on four 48x48 base plates and putting it together was stressful with already putting stickers on the walls. I hate stickers, I don’t understand why toddlers like them so much. And I’m in the process of building a LEGO Batcave on 18 blue plates. The builds look great without MILS, so I don’t mind the elbow-grease of moving stuff at all. The only thing the new roads can actually be of use for is bridges and overpasses. Give us the old plates back, LEGO! WHYYYYYYY!!??

And having so many of them built up, I definitely wanted to try to use them before I spent a small fortune on new roads. My final decision on what im actually doing with my roads will be out in a video within a week. I'm actually working on them as we speak! So I hope you check that out! I’m howling to combine elements from all the Batcave sets (minus the 1966 one that will be for display only once I get my hands on it.) so far I just have the 2012 and 2019 caves. IMHO the roads seem too narrow. The lanes are 8 studs wide and there are many vehicles that are 8 studs wide plus some kibble on the sides. I wonder how well a road that's three lanes (one in each direction and a center lane) 10 studs wide and a 1-stud yellow divider between them. That way it fits the 32 stud wide baseplate. The only issue I see is connecting it to MILS since there doesn't seem to be room for the technic pin. My city isn't big enough for roads yet so I'm still thinking about it. But your half-plate roads look good. You just have to be extra careful in planning the city. I suggest making some 8x16 filler pieces of parks or a parking space or something interesting for when you need it. Alternatively, having just got the Lego Ideas Blacksmith set, buying a bunch of 16x16 plants and converting those into a mini-MILS system. If you break the units down to 16x16 instead of 32x32 you have more options and options are good.

I also don't like the 32x32 road mils design with the new plates and modulars for the same reasons. The additional sidewalk feels too wide when the modulars already have their own sidewalks. I'm still considering if I want to adopt the mils system, but have been thinking of using 16x32 plates for the roads (with maybe 32x32 for intersections and T junctions). With the T junction, I would probably place the road at the edge. Alternatively, I would have it so you could attach the roads in the middle, not just at the ends, so you could join the roads as needed.

I agree! I “hate” MILS. Like you I don’t hate hate them really or those that use them. They offer some cool abilities, however, I find the expense of using them in a very large city (such as I used to have) is not justified and you can figure out other creative ways to do the same things with just baseplates and selective layering, and “breaking” the baseplates into manageable “chunks” so that you can move and disconnect them. I think brick or tile made roads look nicer and more smooth than the new road plates. Now if one is willing to use cheap off-brand bricks and baseplates for their MILS then it gets much more economical. But I’d rather sink my money into sets and bricks/plates and tiles that will be used and seen. Again, I think they are great but, it’s all about one’s use case and wallet and pace and priorities. To MILS or not? It’s really just up to the person because after all, isn’t LEGO about just having fun building in however one wants to build. 😀 Good video.

I never had any of the old road plates so I bought a box of the new ones when they were on sale. I think it looks better smaller, especially when there is already a sidewalk in front of the modulars. I think the idea Lego had was that you could add the green plates on the side and connect stuff, just as you said. Just remember before you rip it all apart to make sure your cars fit on the road, you may need to widen them an extra stud. Also, are you going to put traffic lights or road signs? Make sure you have a place to put them.

I agree. I do appreciate what they did, and I think they did a good job of it. I know there are builders who totally love that entire new system, but I do not. I'm a hobby builder, not a collector or a lego city builder with a whole room full of legos. I don't want to have to invest all my time and money into building a road. I'd rather make buildings. I just want to put a couple of road base plates down next to a green or tan baseplate and start making stuff. I don't want to configure the road, and I notice the road is thicker than a regular base plate, so I'd have to switch over how I make stuff. I don't want to do that! I think Lego should keep both options available since people have different preferences.
