Just a random au I came up with just being like, "Oh hey, what if they never removed the fillet and he's just had to live with it this whole time? :D". Pretty funky and while a fun theory, definitely not going to happen so.

Okay questions people have been asking for this video: What's happening? -This is an alternate universe to the show where Wukong was forced to keep his circlet on rather than having it taken off after his journey with Tang San Zang. In this video specifically, its just a scenario of Macaque discovering this fact because Wukong's been hiding it with glamours this whole time. Wukong also has been glamouring his red eyes, the blue streaks in his hair, and any scars he has. What is a glamour? -It's just a term for magically changing the way you appear to other. I'm not sure where the word originally came from but I've seen it thrown around in lots of different talks where magic is involved in a universe so thats what I've been using to describe it. Whats the circlet/headpiece/fillet/headband/jinguquan/whatever? Where did it come from? -The fillet is a device that, when placed on the wearer, tightens around their skull if a spell is spoken. They are unable to remove it without the help of a higher being (in the novel this was Buddha, in lmk, we don't know yet). Wukong had the circlet placed on him by San Zang so that he would be forced to come with the monk and protect him while on The Journey. It was to make him behave and learn to control his anger/impulsive actions. (In the novel, it was because he was murdering people n stuff lol. Not sure they'll go that far in lmk) Why the blue streaks? -Its an after effect from being possessed by LBD. Most ppl do white streaks but I just wanted to do blue for fun :) What is Macaque asking at the end? -To finish his sentence, he's asking "They never took it off?" To which Wukong responds "No, they didn't". The "they" in this scenario being the celestials who refused to remove it. I think that about covers everything. Actually, the episode Amnesia Rules suddenly makes a lot more sense with this. Wukong didn't notice anything off with his "staff" because the sticks he found served as a good base for whatever he was seeing. But it's a lot harder to mask the total absence of something. In this headcanon, he wouldn't have noticed anything off about the circlet because he could still feel that it was there, and never got a good enough look at his reflection to see the glamour.

Imagine the gang seeing the Fillet on Wukong's head and even Nezha is shocked to see that it was never removed as promised. MK would probably be the only one strong enough to break off the fillet to free the Monkey King from his burden.

​@Lagt Duck Girl MK is shown to be extremely powerful. Even noting how scared the Brotherhood is of him and how shocked both Wukong and Macaque are at the Monkey Form. Plus, his Cantonese name is called "Qi Xiotian" meaning "Together Little Heaven". Plus with help from Macaque, it may be possible.

This time it seemed to either be the Jade Emperor or the Buddha himself (it's been a hot minute since I've watched this part of the season) who put the fillet on him. I'd imagine that it may be harder this time to remove. Given how Guan Yin is the Goddess of Mercy (I'm 90% sure), she'd at least have a way to remove it, as was the fillet's purpose. With the Jade Emperor? It'd be more of a choking collar than a teaching tool. I doubt Mk would be the one to remove it. Mk is a stone monkey, like Sun, so if Mk could remove it then so could he. That also wouldn't make much sense story wise. You find a way to remove it and it was just, one of the travelers? The whole time? I have a feeling they'd need to go out and find a high ranking celestial, say, the Goddess of Mercy herself? She could grant mercy upon the Monkey King, freeing him. This is just an idea tho, as most of these comments are. Just thought I'd hand over my 50¢

It’s basically just what it shows in this animatic. Everything is the same story wide except at the end of The Journey, the celestials/Buddha never took off the fillet. They kept it there for insurance because they didn’t want him to start causing trouble again. So he hid it with glamours because he doesn’t want anyone else to try to use it against him (and he hates looking at it). Also he hides his red eyes and scars because people have said they make him look scary. And he hides the blue hair as well after the LBD possesses him. The au itself is kind of a one-off thing i just made randomly but I might develop it more in the future.

Fun fact, Wu Kongs eyes are supposed to canonically be red and glowing like embers in a hearth. This happened because long story very short the heavenly court tried to cook him alive to separate him for the many elixirs and pills and peaches of immortality he ate, but just burned what was left of his mortality instead from then on, his eyes went from the normal golden brown of a mortal monkey to red.

A fillet is just another word for the circlet around his head that Tripitaka used to keep him in check while on The Journey. It tightens around his head and causes intense pain. It gets taken off at the end of The Journey by Buddha I believe. The fillet has a lot of names for it (circlet, headband, jingguquan, etc) but I just went with fillet cuz at the time of making this video I just felt like it. A glamour is a term for like, a magical disguise. I'm not sure if the term came from across stories and media in general or if thats how they actually describe disguises in jttw but overall its accepted as just a term for using magic to make yourself look different. In this au, the fillet was never taken off. Also Wukong uses glamour to hide his red eyes (canon to jttw) and the blue streaks in his hair from LBD's possession (hc of mine since i liked the idea of blue streaks instead of white). This scene is mainly upsetting because the fillet is basically like a shock collar that he can never take off, so the idea that its been here the whole time, despite the fact that he's done so much to redeem himself, is angsty and sad and terrible hee hee. Was he just being too mischievous that they had to keep him in check, what I mean is what did he exactly do to get this fillet thingy. @@WaffleFalafel5 Alright so im not sure how they'll handle this in the show, but in jttw, Wukong was made to wear the fillet because he wasnt listening to Tripitaka. As a monk, he had a firm belief in y'know, not killing people, but wukong didnt really care and basically was killing anyone who was bothering them (like robbers and stuff). Obviously, this caused them to argue and Wukong got mad so he just left Tripitaka. Eventually he does come back but before he does, Guan Yin (shes basically the goddess of mercy) gives Tripitaka the crown and he tricks Wukong into putting it on so that Wukong wouldn't leave anymore, and so that he would listen and stuff. TLDR: Wukong wasn't listening to his master, so he got a magic dog collar to keep him in check. As for the line Macaque says, he's saying "They never took it off?" and Wukong's like "Nope. :(" The "they" would be like, the celestials and Buddha, the people in charge who originally made him wear it in the first place. And Wukong's red eyes are from the time he was captured by Heaven and put in a furnace (that's the Trigram Furnace in the show that MK gets trapped in too). In the book, Wukong gets stuck in there for 49 years and when he finally gets out, he has red eyes from the smoke. I think in LMK tho, they just said that this is how he got his "golden eyes of truth" but I think it would be cooler if he still had the red eyes but just was hiding them with a glamour. :) I'm not really sure if Wukong is a demon. I think he's considered one tho but technically he's not like anyone. He's stronger than like, everyone in the entire world which would techinically make him a god of sorts, but he does have demonic features/tendencies so who knows. Nah, he was put in the furnace cuz he kept causing trouble for Heaven, he stole a bunch of peaches, ate immortal pills and wine and stuff lol. This was before The Journey I don't mind answering the questions! I suggest reading a bit about JTTW tho, even if its just summaries or summary videos. It's really helpful and also fun to know the story! But there's no pressure if you don't want to. This is my hyperfixation rn so I love talking about it lmao

I wanted to ask about how the fillet on Wukong's head works. Is he in constant pain all the time or does it only start causing him pain if he disobeys? Kinda like a shock collar. If the dog goes out of line, the owner can press a button to shock them. Is that how the fillet works? It's okay if you don't know this. I'm curious because I can't find anything on it.

Im not entirely sure how it works in LMK since we have yet to see it in action, but in the JTTW novel and most interpretations, the circlet tightens around wukong's head whenever San Zang recites a specific spell. Both the words for the spell and the circlet were given to San Zang by Guan Yin. It doesn't have to just be San Zang who says it, anyone who knows the spell can activate it. The spell just has to be said out loud (as far as im aware) and the circlet tightens around his head. It only stops if the person stops reciting the spell. So yes, it's essentially like a shock collar but if the collar tightened and to activate it you said words. Hope this makes sense!

In the beginning of journey to the west, wukong was sorta like a power-hungry monster and would be willing to fight/kill ppl just for insulting him. since he was so wild and prone to murder, guan yin (the goddess of mercy) gave Tang San Zang the circlet as a way to control wukong. So after he put it on wukong, whenever wukong would murder people, San Zang would recite a spell and the circlet would tighten, causing huge amounts of pain for wukong. he hated it (obviously) and slowly stopped murdering people lmao. He wasn't able to take off the circlet until the end of The Journey but this video is an au where they never took off the circlet after he redeemed himself at the end of The Journey.
