FUN FACT; the 1996 Monkey King show was really popular in Indonesia. Watching it is like quintessential to growing up in the early 2000s. What's funny is that the localization team made the opening song in Indonesian rap, and it became such a meme among my and my brother's generation because of how memorable it is. AND YES SHOUT OUT TO FLYING BARK PRODUCTIONS, THEY ARE THE VERY TALENTED CREW BEHIND THE ANIMATION. _It's also confirmed in the casting that Nezha is there._

@@Gutslove surprisingly that's not my first introduction to the story, I first heard about it by reading the YA graphic novel "American Born Chinese" created by Gene Luen Yang, who not only wrote the first 5 series of Avatar graphic novels for Dark Horse Comics, but also created the New Superman comic series for DC and a graphic novel adaptation of the famous Superman radio story that knocked the KKK down a peg called "Superman Smashes the Klan"

Man I love Flying Bark Productions (formerly Yoram Gross Studios named after the founder who is sadly passed away a few years ago) since the 90s. While The Magic Riddle was my first movie from them, The Adventures of Blinky Bill animated series was my first tv show from them as well (which I'm watching right now). I haven't seen everything from Flying Bark at the very least seeing a good amount of their stuff.

I think what i love this most about this show is how it continues with the original story of Journey to the West. minor spoilers but we do see past frenemies from Wukong's past like the Dragon of the East, where he got he's staff from and how that's connected to all the shenanigans going on in Season 3, mainly with Mei. i also love the fact Sean Schemmel, voice of Goku in the English dub, is playing the role as Son Wukong himself. a fitting role.

I went to a Lego Store specifically to buy some Monkie Kid sets the other day, and the employee told me that they didn't have any physically (only on their website), because the theme didn't sale well here (I live in Europe)... which is sad. Fun sets and looks like the show is awesome too.

That’s very sad to hear. I went to my local LEGO store (USA California) and they had some sets hidden away at he back of the store. If by chance you live in the UK, LEGO Monkie Kid will air season 3 at the end of May via CITV, hopefully it’ll give the shop more incentive to put the physical sets? Wishful thinking.

I want to tell you how I learned about the novel Journey to the West. In fact, it all turned out so badly that I don't remember when it all started. I remember flipping through the tape tik tok and saw a short episode (lego monkie kid). After a long search, I was able to find this series in English voice acting and omg. I watched two seasons and two movies one day. Until then, I didn't even know that this series was shot from a famous novel. When I found out about it, I started that I was looking for all possible information. Oh God, I watched all the movies about Sun Wukong. There were even those who were deprived of English subtitles ... but how did I live without this wild monkey !? I am very happy to have discovered this story and these characters ) P.s. Macaque is the man I want to take away or kiss. Did you hear it in English voice Macaque? My heart just can't stand it ... this voice is just wonderful XD P.s.s. SEASON THREE SPOILERS:: In season three when mei gets the fire of sahmadi (probably spelled that wrong), tang sees a golden cicada that I guess gets him to read off the book which to helps in getting the fire but more importantly,,..TRIPITAKA WAS A REINCARNATION OF THE GOLDEN CICADA WHICH WAS I THINK A FRIEND OR STUDENT OF THE BUDDA -- TANG IS DEFINITELY RELATED TO HIM SOMEHOW EEEEE

How exciting!! I’ve been keeping my eye on this show mostly because a) I love _Journey to the West_ (I grew up with the legend as a Canadian-born-Chinese and the Monkey King is my childhood hero) and because b) I enjoy the animation (you’re right that _Rise of the TMNT_ is amazing-although as someone who’s also watched the 1980s, 2003, 2012 versions, I will always have a soft spot for those too-the 2012 one especially). But yeah, I haven’t been watching this show itself, but it has my interest! So it’s neat seeing a proper review of it, and I enjoy the fact it’s so well-animated and so clearly a loving tribute to the novel itself. My favourite version of JttW is the 1999 cartoon (God its theme song is still amazing), and as an animation fan, it’s always awesome seeing a new adaptation of Sun Wukong. My one struggle with the fandom is personal and nothing too huge, but I do wish it was easier to find JttW stuff that didn’t have to do with the _Monkie Kid._ I’m mostly referring to the Tumblr tags since “Sun Wukong” etc is often directly tagged and the fandom is quite active within that tag. Still, I am glad the legend is getting more love, even if it’s for a very specific version of the legend. 😆 I do actually have to ask where you watch the Chinese version of the show! While I’ll probably also watch the English version, I do want to experience the Mandarin dub. This is partly due to the fact I’d love to practice my Chinese, but also because Chinese dubs are underrated outside of China (I realize how silly that sounds, but if you are at all familiar with Genshin Impact, you’ll know it’s a Chinese game and yet people act like its original is Japanese). Plus I’m a _major_ donghua fan who keeps track of a lot of animated series that comes out of China now. It doesn’t surprise me that Lego wanted to capitalize on China’s 1 billion population lol. China does it too haha. It’s why so many Chinese shows and websites and songs never promote outside of China-because if they really don’t want to, they don’t _have_ to. That being said, I’ve been extremely excited seeing how quickly donghua has progressed over the years, to the point of becoming more international, and while _Monkie Kid_ isn’t technically _Chinese_ itself, I happily welcome it to the donghua family. 💪

I loved this summary of LMK, very cool as a show. Seeing characters I grew up with in Legos makes me so happy! I would love to add some things as fun facts though (I'm Malaysian myself, growing up with these stories was a big deal for me) Praying you've seen s3&4 already, let's talk about what else LMK references:)! Let's use a character that appears in a lot of Chinese media that is in LMK but we sadly only saw a bit of, he has his own Lego figure thankfully. That would be Erlang Shen(二郎神) also known as Yang Jian! Osp's summary of JttW talks about him at the very start of the series, with him and Wukong having a transformation battle. He is loosely in JttW thought, as you know the JttW focuses more on the demons of Chinese mythology + the journey with the monk and his companions! But, LMK references more than just one Chinese novel. Investiture Of The Gods also known as Fengshen Yanyi (封神演義) is a story more focused on the Gods and goddesses of Chinese mythology. Character, story, and references wise, much more focus on Erlang as well (my boy!!) Erlang is also in Chinese stories listed as following : Lotus lantern ((宝莲灯)) The Story of the Three-eyed God and the Nine-headed Bird(二郎神大战九头鸟) And many more that are just small folk tales ! I used Erlang as an example to show how much references are linked to the characters in LMK that also appear not only in JttW but other Chinese medias! If you've been learning about JttW I highly recommend looking into the other classic Chinese novels as they remark an importance in the times of the actual dynasties of China (well also throwing in some fun storytelling) The four classic Chinese novels are: "Journey to the West" (西游记) Chapters - 100 "Water Margin" (水浒传) Chapters - 120 (wowie , I know) "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" (三国演义) Chapters - 120 "Dream of the Red Chamber" (红楼梦) Chapters - 120.. But those are just the most important writings of China, there are more wonderful novels that have english scripts somewhere! Have fun doing with what you wish with this information! (Side note, hope you're doing well!)

Due to certain comments in the show, like “I go by MK”, has given the fandom a bit of creative freedom in having the headcanon that MK might be Transgender 🏳️‍⚧️ A headcanon is a small bit of belief a fan has over their favorite content. A quick Google search can go into better detail than I can provide.

Fun fact it is actually not a headcanon he is trans- that *is cannon* it's just the writers can't include it because of the show being made for a Chinese audience but many drawings made by the official artists on Twitter feature him with the trans pride flag and I *think* even top surgery scars but I would have to go and grab them to double-check-

Unfortunately, this has been done too much in many shows, saying that a character is canonically something but they don’t say it in the show. Unless they do confirm it in the show proper (not a last second thing), it will remain a headcanon. Don’t just accept something as “canon”, unless it’s said so in the show. We’ve gone through this with countless other forms of media. Don’t accept breadcrumbs thinking they’re a 5 star meal. You deserve better.

Season 2 is now available via Amazon Prime in the United States, 9Now in Australia and unfortunately I’ve lost track of how many other TV channels and streaming services have now started to air the show. I highly suggest you follow MonkieCentral/MonkieKidNews on Instagram and Twitter, Monkie Central here on YT, they got a list of most of the specific channels in various countries that have LMK.

It’s hinted at in certain points that maybe they’re not the descendants, but then we have Sandy’s “flashback” in season 2 and also Mr. Tang referencing the Golden Cicada (along with being guided by one in season 3) We might never have an answer, but it’s fun to theorize!

If you’re in the US, only seasons 1-2 and their respective specials are available via Amazon Kids+. In Australia, it’s under 9Now (S1-2 and their specials). If you’re in the UK, all 3 seasons with their specials, including Season 3’s special that just finished airing TODAY, it’s under CITV. I’m unsure if they have a streaming service or app -they do have a website-, but that’s the only way for the time being.
