Not at all. Huge box office sales, rave reviews, several awards/nominations, multiple sequels. I don’t see how this meets any reasonable definition of “underrated.”

When I saw this movie for the 1st time, I had no expectations at all and went through it with pretty much a blank slate except for appreciating the animation work from both technical and aesthetic standpoints. By the end of the movie I was pleasently surprised with what I just saw as a whole; also making me wonder how in the world Lego greenlit this movie, dealing with subjects that could be considered "subversive".

Yeah, it totally caught me off guard with it's brilliance and deep philosophy. Sort of like how Toy Story surprised everyone way back in 1995. And now I'm hoping the upcoming lego movies will become the next Toy Story series. :)

Subversive sure, but it still came down to 'work together with the ultimately/eventually benevolent businesses', after all.

I feel like Wyldstyle/Lucy and Unikitty are both representations of who girls are pressured to be. As children, girls are taught to be positive and are discouraged from feeling negative emotions, while as teenagers and young adults, they feel pressured to be "strong" and mistake callousness for strength. However, both characters learn that it's okay to respond negatively to unfortunate situations (Unikitty being sad when her home is destroyed) and that it's possible to be both strong and yourself (Lucy revealing who she is to Emmet while also helping lead the revolution).

@@sophiatalksmusic3588 Karen Carpenter or Janis Joplin. Bubbly girly girl in pink and lace and bows or girl with colored streaks in her hair who dresses and dark clothes and the stains girly girl things. Both do not get away from appeasing the male gaze. I have watched plenty of movies and TV shows and cartoons where we are supposed to Sting the girly girl character who freaks out over a broken nail or makes it clear she's watching her diet or where's dresses while lemoore tomboyish girl is still displayed and dressed for heterosexual male approval, she may laugh at the girly girls worries but sometimes we see her maintaining a size 4 at the least with a toned body and large breasts and clothes that show off her figure even after all the pizza she castles and no matter how dirty she gets is always like a sexy messy rather than looking straight up grungy. Society expects girls to always be sweet and cheerful and pretty in a feminine way and to be thin and then we laugh at them when they make it clear that their attempts to do so don't come very naturally (look at all the jokes about wearing face masks or Spanx or breaking nails or being on a diet), it's like we're supposed to make all those efforts to be the most beautiful and perfect woman look effortless. It's why I love that one song from Oliver & Company "perfect isn't easy" or Princess Anna's messy hair and snores in Frozen Or those moments in The marvelous mrs. Maisel where we see Midge and her mother do all that meticulous grooming and making sure that their husbands never see what kind of work goes into that. We need to do away with the idea that there's only one way to be a girl there's only one right way to be an empowered woman and there's only one way to look, and most of all we need to reward showing vulnerability and struggle.

a video like this, on KZbin, that identifies and interprets the world we live in, with only 18,000 views, is actually depicting the injustice and imbalance that we're all subject to with the meta-narrative now being that good content and profundity are often overlooked, living in the shadows of more popular videos that generate views in the millions, though they are far less revelatory and life changing.

With adults' habits of turning playtime into workspaces, I've noticed they do that with video games too. As if they think that if they don't min/max this character with an optimal build and fight this boss exactly the way they're supposed to, they're having fun 'wrong.'

Jaime Quintanar I would say 1984 is a closer parallel, because even though the Lego people view their society as complete happiness like in Brave New World, they are brainwashed by the government, whose purpose is to make them productive, rather than happy. Good point, though!

Not an attack on Divinity at all because saying everyone is the special is like saying everyone is made in the image of God. What it does expose is the tyranny of the individual which is a mental prison that does not allow people to imagine that we are all made in the same image...being made in the same image and being an individual is possible, if you just believe in the Devine One, our Creator, God.

My own criticism on the LEGO Movie is how it displays capitalism. It thinks slight socialism is better when that just leads to communism. America thanks to the beliefs of the founding fathers has done really well in the past and can still work today
@sophiatalksmusic3588

How does the movie display socialism, though? I think it's more of an attack on consumerism than capitalism. As an economic system, the idea of capitalism isn't bad, though unchecked capitalism can lead to negative results, just as communism can.

@eartianwerewolf
@eartianwerewolf 6 жыл бұрын
Saying that, there could be reasons as to why you preferred Lego Batman (why it resonated with you more particularly ) . It's also not a bad movie by any means. Maybe Lego movie struck with me more, because I have recently learned to let go of my adolescent obsession with trying to act/ look unique because being normal is not good enough ...When I now realize that being myself is the real way to be true, and being unique is not as important as being a good, honest person. Basically it's better to be an Emmet than to be a posturing phony ;). So I feel an affinity for WildStyle . But after stuff that has happened in my life, I feel for the 'need to love again' thread in the Batman movie too. It's just I feel like that's a kind of more tried and true lesson for a story to have vs what I mainly got from Lego Movie. But I do think that the Batman movie was subversive in that it kind of removes some of that allure of the 'lone wolf' and romanticizing broken relationships in exchange for highlighting the close relationships Batman does have, and how that makes him a stronger hero (something that gets overlooked sometimes).
