This set feels like it wanted to be both of the previous versions without realizing that they're different. If they wanted to make one based off the first season, they didn't have to add the "bikes" since they weren't a thing. Without accommodating those, more time may have been focused one making it more sturdy

Yep. Think I recall the original one in the show where one piloted the aircraft in the back and the other 3 piloted the front. Not sure if it would be difficult to add in, but can understand giving everyone their own part

I've come appreciate lego making builds more solid over the past decade. This one feels like a throwback to Exo-force where the set looks really cool, but bits pop off easily. Oddly nostalgic, but not in a good way.

I think this set proves why I can't entirely get behind Legacy. Sets like the Golden Mech and Zane's Titan Mech, Tournament of Elements, etc. that make great builds but still respect the original design are what I want. This to me just looks messy. I don't like way it transforms and the fact they still won't let it be show-accurate to all four of them fitting in the two cockpits. I never liked this one from the moment I saw it. It's the same issue I had with the Legacy Bounty: if you're going to remake old sets, older fans like myself want things to be more show accurate. Fix design flaws, make things so they work right, etc! I respect what Lego is doing here, but it's made it so I've only bought maybe 4 legacy sets, and I own almost every ninjago set from Tournament of Elements onward. If Legacy was meant to appeal to older fans like me, sets like this really put me off of the line.

Some Legacy sets LEGO does exceptionally well while others not so much.

Not all Legacy sets do this. The Monastery and Cole's Earth Driller are two of the greatest Lego sets ever "in my opinion;" and capture their original versions (and/or their source material) exceptionally well. Though, this set does a poor job in capturing both it's original set and source material.

@@icepower2951 Oh no I agree. The Earth Driller, Monastery, Golden Mech and Titan Mech from Legacy are just infinetly better than their originals. I just mean ones like the Bounty, Sonic Raider and Samurai X Mech stray too far for my liking and make the line so hit or miss I can't say I really like it.

If they had just improved on the original one, it'd be completely fine, but they didn't, they improved on the Ultra Stealth Raider, which is already very different from the original, and name it the Ultra *SONIC* Raider, which now doesn't make sense, as it has neither the sound cannons nor the dual person cockpits

Totally agree. I mean I get that the Sonic Raider's design is outdated, but this really isn't the Sonic Raider once you notice the foundational elements; detachable tread bikes, wheel-cockpit flipping mechanism, single back wheel, single-blade wing mechanism (as opposed to the 3-blade fanning mechanism), these are specifically all the features that make the Stealth Raider different from the Sonic Raider, not to mention its missing the funky dagger chains amongst other things. This is a big miss in my opinion

Id rather they just leave out the motorbike transformation and just have the plane part. It doesnt have the rugged look of the original and the back and front is kinda squished 😬 love that golden zane but this design isn't their best. On a positive note, the plane on the back looks amazing

I think they should have made the cockpits/cabins as big as possible so you could hold a huge amount of figures inside, and then allot a completely new function to the treads. Steering and/or suspension may have been pretty cool, or, as the Raider is typically depicted with some type of side-mounted miniguns, some kind of firing action feature.

Hey Jang, this set was designed by Markus Rollbühler who actually did the Ninjago City Gardens, not by a Junior Designer at all, but I agree it is not that great, especially knowing what the designer is capable of.

They really missed the mark with this one. Just make the transforming parts connect with a few studs so that they won't flap around anymore. And at least make the ninja all fit in tbe cockpits so that it becomes more show-accurate instead of less so :/

@@Insane_IK In case you somehow couldn't tell (i'm NOT calling you stupid by saying that) their point is that this Legacy version of the Ultra Sonic Raider barely looks like the original because with every other Ninjago Legacy set that's actually based on a previously existing set can be seen as remakes of/modernized versions of the sets that they're remakes of/modernized versions of while you can barely tell that this Legacy version of the Ultra Sonic Raider is even supposed to be a remake of/modernized version of the original Ultra Sonic Raider. Or atleast that's what I get in my head by reading the comment. Personally I can barely tell that it's supposed to be a remake of/modernized version of the original Ultra Sonic Raider and honestly the only similarities between the sets that I can see is that they include the four original ninja as well as the fact that the main build of the set includes a "flying" thing and that the main build of the set (partially) having the same color palette.

I’m genuinely surprised that they made those modified three long technic pins into gold. I thought they were color locked into red, grey, and black. Very surprising to see them in gold of all colors. I’m sure it’s not a particularly strong color for a technic piece 😂

I think this is the worst interpretation of the Ninjago 'Raider' (Ultra Stealth or Ultra Sonic). It doesn't hold all of the Ninja in the center, The jet is fun, but innaccurate and it looks very fiddly.

I have the ultra stealth raider from day of the departed, and it has the same issues with stability. The back wheel falls off all the time, and everytime i try to separate the different vehicles, something breaks. Seems like a reccuring theme with this type of set. Apart from that though, it was a great set and i still love it. Anywho, would you consider doing a comparison of the 3 ultra raiders to date?

I just got this for myself as a Christmas Present for later on along with the Budgies Brick heads for my little sister's Christmas Present. I missed the OG Ultra Sonic Raider (I don't think I missed out on much), and unfortunately also Ultra Stealth Raider (which I'm much more bummed out about missing). I think I made a good choice. Considering the fact that this one at least still has the split function but for all four vehicles unlike the original from 2011. A hundred bucks well spent and another 500+ VIP Points to add to the former total of roughly 4750.

It is totally understandable to be critical on this set from an adult point of view. But I can only imagine how kids of a group of 4 will love this set, when each of them get a piece of their own vehicles to battle together, and when facing the ultimate boss, they combine together into a giant vehicle to release the most fire power. Yeah nah, lol. I already have both the previous versions so I dont really see any point to getting this one, it just seems clunky to me. It's a technical improvement over the 2012 version just because Lego design work has come so far since then, but I still think the 2016 stealth raider is the superior model out of all of them, it feels very sleek and well built, and its transformation function feels the best out of all of them. Getting that golden Zane via Bricklink for sure.

I have to disagree with the statement of "best looking out of the raiders done to date" This looks the most Toyish, the split function shouldn't even be in this version of the raider since its supposed to be based on the 2012 version called the ultra sonic raider the only addition feature should be the flyer. I don't like the redesign its seems to be really compact and squashed and it is inaccurate and its not legacy's fault its them trying to combine the features of two separate vehicles. Hence why the best version was the stealth raider since it is the true successor of the sonic raider.

Yeah just everything about the stance & overall presentation of this one in complete form is better to me from the outside than the Stealth in retrospect. stealth was great by itself for its time and its splitting seems better, but I have no nostalgia towards Stealth and looking back at it today I'd rather have this for display for sure. I think I disagree with Jang that this is the best looking variant of the Raider we've seen. Ninjago designs have always been more on the toyetic side, and I think they usually wear it pretty well. As part of the legacy line, this set is supposed to be updating the classic Sonic Raider, but it looks a lot less solid, and is also trying to do things the Stealth Raider did (but somewhat worse). I really like the flying vehicle, but that's about it. I think the Stealth raider was a better redo, although it's supposed to be a different vehicle.

Why not just connect the sidecars in the middle with 2 pilots? One can be the driver, the other is the gunner. Or why not make the tracks as separate assemblies, put the bodies together, one facing forwards, the other towards the rear and connect everything back together?

it's a tough one, because I really like how the wheel / cockpit just rotate around for the transformation. It feels like the wing deployment could work as long as we pay attention to how they are folded... With those in mind maybe the remaining issues could be overlooked, but that's still a $80 toy and so it feels a bit expensive for those oversights

idk what people are saying but this is a much more cleaner version then the original did you know how ugly that thing was? you guys only liked it because it was a big thing back in the day but look how much more clean designs are and people are saying this is bad? it isnt suppose to be an exact copy and this is suppose to be the more cleaner version then the original. the only problem with this one is that they couldve made the 2 side things connect which i could easily do or make a video on how to do it and the funny thing is literally 90% of the people that were watching this already knew that the side vehicles had to connect but guess not. we are even lucky they decided to make legacy sets.
