Great review! I agree that the 2012 version is too empty when the flyer is detached, but it has a few small details like gas tanks that give me the impression of a truck without its trailer, which naturally looks a little empty. The 2021 version has those side car things that aren't comparable to anything I've seen, so I prefer the 2012 version personally.

Great points all around! My favourite is still the Ultra Stealth Raider but I am considering buying the new one and customising it to fix some of the issues. I'm currently planning on filling in the seats of the sidecars permanently attaching them to the central vehicle, so that like the original version, it will only split in two. Hopefully I will find a way to lock the front cockpit in place to make it sturdier too since I won't need it to move anymore.

I personally think the decision to copy features of the Stealth Raider when this is a legacy Sonic Raider was the biggest mistake here. It ended up as a design that's halfway between the two while simultaneously falling short of being either. As a Sonic raider, several notable features are missing, such as the chain of daggers, 3-part fanning mechanism of the wings, the exhaust pipe and flames, as well as the prison (although its debatable whether these look good or not). Honestly, parts budget used for the side cars should've gone into making a better bike and flyer and perhaps opting for 2 seats in each vehicle instead. With that said though, as I own the original Sonic Raider, I would say the new version is still better simply for its overall finish (the original is really lackluster with uninteresting combination of parts).

Comparing the 2021 version with the 2016 version made me realize a few problems with the Ultra Stealth Raider. While the vehicles look great on their own, they don't blend well when merged together. When the tread bikes merge with the big bike, the piece that links them together is way too visible and the rotating stud shooters on the big bike push the tread bikes out too much so they end up sticking out. The jet has no creative features and seems a bit bland. The big bike for 2021 has a bit of a balance problem, but I prefer that over the 2016 big bike with the rotating stud shooters that look so out of place. Basically, the Ultra Stealth Raider feels like half the developers created four different vehicles to use in Day of the Departed, but the other half wanted to recreate the Ultra Sonic Raider, so they compromised and merged all four vehicles together. My advice; if you have the 2021 version, use it however you want because it's not as bad as people say it is. If you have the 2016 version, use them as four separate vehicles since they look so much better as individuals.

I plan on integrating the new ultrasonic raider into a more complicated build that will have 6 vehicles that can combine together. Each vehicle i hope to be unique, but there is a lot to do to make this work.

I am so glad I picked up the stealt raider when it came out, it was so fun to play with as a kid. The legacy set just gets worse and worse the more I look at it and it did its to predecessors so wrong. Glad I didn't pick it up but own the original two.

Personally as i was a kid in the 2011's who couldnt afford a lot of big lego sets its nice to get a chance to own this set. I definitely am more into legos now just for decoration than play features, and this set looks really nice on my desk!

I had both the 2012 and 2016, and while I have nostalgia for 2012, 2016 is probably in my top 3 favorite sets of all time and easily my favorite Ninjago set.

Just saw this review. Great comparison between the models. The legacy version Does seem strange to me for another reason. The 2012 model is based on the original raider from season 1, which only had the detachable flyer in the show and the 2016 is based on another ( reinvented ) vehicle, from later in the show (between season 6 and 7 I believe) This makes the 2021 version actually more of a hybrid rather than a legacy vehicle, since it is based on both and not actually accurate to the original raider. Accuracy to the lore and actually being 2 different vehicles rather than 3 versions of 1, aside: As play set, I would Pick 2016 as nr 1, 2021 as nr 2 and 2012 as nr3.

2012 : Is the og looking and is one of the best display models in entire Ninjago history. 2017 : Is looking pretty good and futuristic and is one of the best models in the entire Ninjago history to play with. 2021 : Is both of it and cause Ninjago is meaned for kids so they can play with the sets is completly fine but serves its Idea of beeing a legacy set which should look or function kinda the original model the worst in the entire Legacy theme.

With some moding I just left the bike and the flier as one vehicle and I'm using the rest of the pieces for a moc vehicle because those side builds are embarrassingly bad. It's hard to even understand how they turned out so bad because the rest of the Legacy sets, and the whole of modern Ninjago is so good.

as cool as the ultra sonic raider is there are two things i absolutely hate about the set A. you cant fit all four ninja on the vehicle like in the tv show B> the plastic treads have a hard time running on hard flooring! hence why i think the ultra stealth raider is better as it fixes those two problems

In my opinion the 2021 is the worst one with a god awful and a good minifigure selection , the 2012 is mid with a decent build and a good minifigure selection and the 2016 is the best one ( i actually own it) with an amazing build and a good minifigure selection plus unlike the other sonic raiders it has a side build which is a good build

To be completely honest. When you just look at the sets from a 'i putt the set as 1 whole vehicle on my shelf for display purposes' standpoint the 2021 ultra sonic raider is pure trash in my opinion. The 2012 one is way better then that. But the ultra stealth one. Jeeeez that one is so freaking dope. Back in 2016 when i was 14 and my parents where like. No you can't buy it you are way to old for that stuff. I was verry disapointsd but I have ordered it a few days agoo. And i am sooooo exited. The set is big. The set is dope and dang. When looking at it estatically It's perfect for my lego shelf🤣🤣🤣🤣
