LEGO power functions electromagnet

While making the LEGO power functions laser I asked myself "what els can I make in this PF motor housing?" the answer: an electromagnet!
So I bought a 9 volt electromagnet off ebay and mounted it in a LEGO power functions XL motor housing, the result is better than expected!

Right now I'm not sure what I'll use it for (suggestions are welcome). The idea that I might be able to make this was motivation enough and I'm sure I'll find great applications for it!

What's the current draw like? Is it controllable via an sBrick, or would it need a motor + PF switch?
