My custom built motorized, steerable, remote control LEGO Monowheel. I originally started making this as a proof of concept for a LEGO BB8 droid model.
It is controlled using the 2 Power Functions M Motors and a counter weight based propulsion/steering system.

At the beginning, you think, "hey this looks pretty good!" Then it shows it breaking down the stairs. Imagine if car commercials worked the same.

The problems you mentioned about this model are things that I would have NO idea how to fix, but it seems like you already have some ideas for improvements. Just shows how good you are at working with LEGO. I'm excited to see an improved model of this, but even the way it is now is pretty neat!

Again a great idea and wonderful execution on the design of the ball. For the first version it already looks good. To centre the counter weight you could use a PF servo with a small liftarm attached to move the counter weight. Press the red button on the remote and the counter weight will centre. And like mentioned before in the comments is to use a Sbrick. This gives faster control over the fast moving ball compared to the train remote. Good luck on improving this idea. Although it has been done before this is the best RC ball I have seen so far.

Just a quick idea for focus in the video: Position the object by hand at distance it's gonna be away from the camera when it's moving and focus the camera, then disable auto focus. This way when the object is of the frame and just passes by for a short time, camera won't focus on the walls.

I suggest using a servo motor to steer instead of an m motor, the servo motor can be attached by an axle out of the front of it and when you turn the wheel in one direction it will spin up to 90 degrees in that direction and doing your weight based turning, then it will be easier to control ( you spin the wheel on the controller to spin the wheel thingy) AND it will have self center (red button)

Here's an idea for steering. You could use the same motor for a method used frequently in a game called Besiege. Some weights are attached to a motorized wheel on the edges. The wheel is made horizontal rather than vertical. When the vehicle moves forward, that weighted wheel spins rapidly in the necessary direction. As the creation moves forward, the wheels slightly "slip" and change the creation's orientation.
@JKBrickworks
@JKBrickworks 8 жыл бұрын

xX_BassBass_Xx, gyroscoping (what it's called in Besiege and real life) isn't possible with low rpms. Gyro's must spin fast and probably only the XL motor is capable if sort of working. Just so you know, Besiege physics are heavily modded usually and all gyros in Besiege use mods to have a ridiculous speed of like x200 while the game max is x2.

Nice way to steer. may put some weight to the sides and elevate them in their counter direction. Whenever left one moves to up, right will go down (like an "H" with turning part is the center and sides moves vertical in opposite direction). decent weight will lean that thing to the side i guess
@DrRandomStranger

What if the steering mechanism was sort of like a pendulum? The weight beneath a motorized pivot, so it'd attempt to heave the mass of the pendulum to one side? Then you could let gravity do the work of centering the thing, and perhaps use more of a joystick to control it.

For the self-centering mechanism you can do what ZillaStorm said or you can make the right-hand side turning thing on the remote to become a joystick as there are methods to do this and just have a rubber band on both sides of the joystick to keep it centered when there is no pressure applied!

That is one of the greatest challenges. Since a kid swallowed another magnetic toy and was injured, the rules on magnets in toys were tightened. The LEGO company had to encase its train magnets in the buffer beam to make the piece too big to swallow, which means it is next-to-useless for other applications like BB-8 head-holding. I have shown a solution in my own LEGO Ideas project - search there for "BB-8" if you don't see the link anywhere here.
