I’m not quite sold on the lower price per piece and thus “more lego for your money”. Lego is namely using increasingly smaller pieces. I am more interested in the actual weight of the sets.

This! Lego speed champions, for example has kept the 8 or 9 cents per piece for the past 6 years, but when taking the price per gram, it has gone up drastically! It costs more per gram than it used to.

this is a very good point. the price of a set correlates much higher with it’s weight than it’s piece count. it seems to me that price/part is an indicator that was fabricated by the lego community. the lego group seems not to care about it when pricing their sets.

What I loved about 20th Anniversary was how affordable Anniversary sets were, mostly below $40 besides the Slave I (which was basically a mini UCS in terms of a design) where as 25th Anniversary is crazy in terms of prices for single sets. I don't think cent per piece is a fair comparison as pieces can be large and small. Way better metric would be cent per weight of plastic (which still compromises on printed parts) but that's just my opinion.

The price per piece math is ridiculously flawed. U have go by total piece weight / cost. A 1x1 tile is equivalent to a 10x10 plate in your math.

About 6 months ago, I was in a graduate statistics class where we were able to do a final project on basically whatever we wanted. I decided to look at the price per piece of Lego Star Wars sets because of the constant discussion about price hikes and everything being overpriced. I randomly selected 100 retail sets, 50 from between the years 1999-2012, and 50 from 2013-2024. I specifically ignored certain categories of sets, such as UCS sets and 4+ sets. The data that I collected showed that, while the actual PRICE of sets has increased on average, the price per piece ratio has not significantly increased between those two time windows, DESPITE INFLATION. When I say the increase was "not significant," I mean that the data I collected actually showed a LOWER price per piece ratio for the 2013-2024 sets compared to the 1999-2012 sets, but it was an incredibly small difference that could easily be the result of sampling error. It was actually quite eye opening for me. Yes, price per piece certainly isn't the best method of judging a set's value, because certain sets have a pretty poor price per piece ratio but make up for it with a large pool of minifigures (such as the Mos Eisley Cantina, which is $400 for only about 3200 pieces, but also has a whopping 21 minifigs). What IS significant is that while price per piece hasn't really significantly changed, sets are generally more expensive now. Take a look at battle packs; the earliest battle packs retailed for $10, but modern battle packs retail for double that while containing the same number of figs but more pieces that contribute to a more detailed side build. But there were a LOT of pretty overpriced sets in the earlier years of Lego Star Wars that feel like they're just ignored. I mean overpriced without even adjusting for inflation! The 2000 Milennium Falcon contained 663 pieces and 6 figures, but retailed for $100 back then (adjusted for inflation, that would be over $180). If anything, I'd argue that the biggest issue with modern Lego Star Wars sets is less about the price per piece and more about the number of figures. As you said yourself in this video, the 20th Anniversary sets came out to $11 per figure, but the 25th Anniversary sets came out to $18 per figure. I think there are too many sets that either contain the bare bones of what you would expect in terms of figures, or even feel like they are MISSING figures that SHOULD be included (Enoch in the Battle of Peridia set, I'm looking at you). If most sets just included 1 or 2 more figures, even if they were duplicates like an extra stormtrooper or rebel trooper, I think it would go a LONG way to improving the value of sets.

I wrote a program to take all sets from, star wars, city, Ninjago, speed champions, and marvel, for all years. It would then get the weight for each set. Prices for Lego went down a bit in 2006. Early Star wars set were definitely expensive. Excluding sets below $15. The price per pieces has been fluctuated over the years but price per gram has been relatively stable but has recently has gone up, while piece per piece has stayed the same. Lego speed champions, for example has kept the 8 or 9 cents per piece for the past 6 years, but when taking the price per gram, it has gone up drastically! It costs more per gram than it used to. Was 11 cents per gram but has gone up to 14 just this year.

Price per part has always felt like a bad comparison considering how many smaller pieces that have been created/added since. And while I like the newer pieces and it creates more accuracy, it feels like its ruined the "tried and true" metric that has been used. I think something like weight of plastic per dollar would be a better comparison nowadays, how much physical stuff are you getting now vs before. And while I don't love this metric, as like price per piece it ignores specialty parts and prints, it does feel more accurate as a comparison between older and newer sets.

The real headline is ~250 for five sets then v >600 for 7 sets now. Even taking the two priciest off the top to match the 5 sets it’s still ~400. I think the biggest drawback of these 25th anniversary sets is that most of them are overpriced. Apart from R2-D2 and maybe Boarding on Tantive IV, in my opinion the rest of the sets are not worth the price and should be cheaper. I know that these sets have more details (so more smaller pieces) but I will still compare the retail prices with my personal opinion on how much these sets should cost (at most): Star Destroyer, 159.99 USD / 129.99 USD (more details but the ship still doesn't look like 160$ to me) Sith Infiltrator, 69.99 USD / 49.99 USD (not a bad set but I just don't see the value of 70$) Dropship Vs Speeder, 39.99 USD / 29.99 USD (based on the prices of previous battle pack type sets) R2-D2, 99.99USD / 99.99 USD (arguably the best price out of all of them) Droid Builder, 99.99 USD / 69.99 USD (set clearly aimed at a younger group of fans, for me the only reason for the purchase is Leia) Desert Skiff, 79.99 USD / 59.99 USD (one of the most overpriced SW sets of all time in my opinion) Boarding on Tantive IV, 54.99 USD / 49.99 USD (not a bad price but it could be slightly lower)

I think Cal Kestis and Darth Malak should be above fives. Fives should have been in a micro fighter lol... or an actual TCW set. Malak isn't just 'Old Republic,' but is KOTOR. Of which, only Darth Revan is the only other official lego from that line. I also think Cal Kestis should be higher than fives, just due to the fact that he is less likely to have another set... however, I'd love to see a Mantis set someday.

The way of evaluating sets via "price per part" really needs to go away completely. It has been proven to not be very accurate if you look at the data. Price by weight is about 90-95% accurate by comparison. Plus, sets 10 or even 20 years ago are comprised of completely different types of parts - sets today typically have a lot more small parts.

They clearly strategized their anniversary figures, the only figure I REALLY wanted was Malak, but buying his set was ridiculous. Fives was the only one that was worth it. I was happy to get Saw on sale, I don’t care for the pink droid but at least it’s basically a battle pack. But LEGO clearly went out of their way to squeeze blood from the stone. The 20th anniversary was fun. The 25th literally had me consulting my budget spreadsheet in Target to try to decide if 1 figure was worth an expensive set I cared nothing about.

All I'm saying is, the entire release of 2020 cost me around $450nzd at release, all full price purchases. The entire release of 2024 will cost me $1,160nzd at release and at full price. Admittedly, there are slightly more sets available with this wave than the 2020 series. The cheapest set in this 2024 wave is $80nzd. In 2020, 4 of the 5 sets released were cheaper than the current cheapest set. This was, hands down in my eyes, the worst year for prices I have ever seen in my 20+ years of buying and collecting.

Personally for collectors the 20th anniversary was the best because there’s less sets therefore much cheaper to collect the whole deal. Compared to the 25th anniversary which is more expensive. The 25th anniversary figures atleast half of them could’ve been included in any regular set. Cal(current media), Saw(any rogue one set),Qt(random astromech) Fives(in some random TCW set) Nien nub(in some random ROTJ set)

When I'm looking at the 25th Anniversary figures side by side, only two look sloppy, Fives and QT-KT. QT-KT really needed back printing like R2. Fives obviously needs a cloth kama like we used to get, and the helmet print just looks bad. Compare Fives helmets to the 2014 P2 Wolfpack helmet and the printing quality is night and day.

Cents per piece means nothing because you have to take into consideration the size and amount of plastic per piece you’re getting. Lego uses smaller and smaller pieces each year, inflating piece counts, shrinking sets and bringing down the “cent per piece”. This year’s prices were at an all-time catastrophically high. Extremely expensive

I love most of the wave, ordered the dropship and speeder just 8 hours before double points, lucky me, love the set a lot, the speeder is so good looking, QT-KT is really great, I wish we would get a whole set for the D-Squad arc, maybe the republic shuttle with the squad and Gregor. I was so excited for Fives, but I really dislike his cloth piece, as one that plays a lot with his figures and poses them in builds for display, the double pauldron keeps deforming so much, I wish he'd have the one that was on ARC Captain Hammer in 2012, that one still holds up and shapes just perfect, but at least we got Fives' face, so I can have him in p1 armor like in Rookies episode or in p2 plain like in the Inhibitor chip arc. I totally need to get my hands on Cal Kestis and Saw Gerrera. Saw is really well made, and I hate him, but I love to hate him, a lot of his actions are not those of a good guy, so he offers great pov on the Rebellion. Young Leia I feel could've been some other character, maybe one from sequel trilogy, since we already have 3 other characters from the age of rebellion era. I think Sidon Ithano, the Crimson Corsair, would've been amazing option to have there.
