This was actually used on real full scale locos too, look up "Fireless locomotive" if you wanna see examples of locomotives that functioned in a similar way. I think it's kinda interesting that you basically reinvented this concept :)

My City used to have a Andrew Barclay Fireless Locomotive at the Docks on display but a few years ago the Docks had a makeover & now the Train is gone 😭 I have no idea where it was moved to... I really miss seeing it everyday as it usually brought a smile to My Face

This is a great use of the pneumatic system. Lego always underutilized it's potential, even though technic has been toying with it's potential for almost as long as it's existed.

I believe Lego could still diversify the Lego Technic sets it proposes. It's basically centered on cars and work vehicles, but I think there are some other interesting things to try ;)

It is the most beautiful locomotive I have seen to be built out of Lego but yet...it is so large I see it dose not fit on conventional lego tracks. But all the points go to the function and the creativity the design is of course one of the German rail old steam locos and I have to just say well done,... Well done

Really nicely done, It is on the larger side which mean a lot more detail, sadly probably also a lot less "playable" for becoming an Idea's set. You have my support nonetheless.👍 (In case you are bored, I also have 2 iterations of pneumatic locomotives. The only non Lego bits in those are a drop of oil and a car tire pump)

10/10 build Here’s an idea: can you add an electric compressor system in the coal car? It’ll run on battery then, but won’t lose the pneumatic charm Also, can a walschaerts valve gear be put into it? Then it’ll be remote-controlled with a lego servo

Man, I hate to be the critic, but to get this thing to operate better, you need to make some sort of crosshead, and attach the driving rod to the second driver. After further review, this might not be possible. I love this little loco, and I love what you do with these little things that kids call toys. I'd love it if you were to be a professor in a college classroom. The engineers and designers you would turn out would be top notch!

Here it's more like 11 studs, but 7/8 might be possible, it's just that small pneumatic cylinders are really not powerful, you better have 4 of them !

Do you think theirs a way to set up a Lego motor in the tender to compress air by moving something. then maybe hooking up a receiver to the motor to try to control the speed

That's what some people suggest for the pumping of air yeah, it's possible, I may try that sooner or later. For controling the whole train with motors+receivers tho I don't think we have enough place and personnaly I prefer to control it manually (like a real train, you feel like the engineer of the locomotive ^^).
