it needs 4x4, both needed it actually. but lego probably wanted to save money and not inc another motor + parts required for all wheel drive.

I got both of these models mostly for the pieces in the sets. Cause if you buy the hub and motors separately, it cost more than the sets... I didn't build the off road buggy yet, but I think I'll give it a try

I don't think so, it has a very basic drivetrain to modify the gear ratio you may need to rework the way that power gets transmitted to the wheels

No it wouldn't. The XL motor is slower than l motor but it'd have more torque like shown in the climbing test

They're not designed to match rc cars. They have more novelty because they are lego and you can build and rebuild them

I just want to mention that some experiments have found that the XL-motor is just about the same as the L-motor. The main difference we know about seems to be higher efficiency. Also, the software "gearbox" can be disabled through the powered up app. So if you find the Top Gear car much cheaper, maybe get that instead.

I agree, I just got the buggy and the vat itself is really awesome...except Control +, the control + Hub costs 60€ when bought separately, it makes the price go skyrocket when the same car with PF instead wouldn't be more than 100€. I'm glad I got it for 90€
