The car is built with a positive caster angle on the front tires, when going in reverse it's negative, the wheels shaking is not due to the controller but due to the lack of control of a negative caster angle, the wheels are always trying to go back to a positive angle.

I actually got this set early from a toy shop yesterday and I gotta say I love it! I don't have the beta app or anything so I actually created my own custom control interface! I found that the servo calibration block itself isn't perfect at all so I created buttons that would fine tune the servo to have a deafult more to the left or more to the right, in increments of 10. Your review of this set is epic and I gotta say I love the fart sound effect!

9:49 I've seen this same thing happen in RC cars, more commonly if using a gyro-sensing receiver. My best guess is the car thinks it's oversteering or understeering, but the car's gyro assumes it's still moving forward and incorrectly steers. As a hobbyist myself, I have yet to find an easy solution.

The in-app game reminds me of some of LEGO's proto-mixed-reality stuff from the '90s/early '00s. Some of it workd because it required interacting with physical things (e.g. Spybotics) but others were even worse than the buggy. It's a significant challenge to try to gamify toys but, as you say, the important thing is that you've got a physical toy to play with - you don't want to be looking away from it at a screen all the time. That buggy game *might* be good if it worked with 2 buggies and you could race and attack a real opponent... maybe.
@RacingBrick4 жыл бұрын
That'd require sensors and other (expensive) equipment on the buggies to detect each other, and the dual control/focus issue is still there to resolve. I don't see how this could work unless they try something like Mario Kart Live.

I tested the L motor with a traditional geared rack steering setup, and it couldn't even get past the calibration process without popping out of gear or exploding the whole assembly. I see why they used this odd steering setup: the steering program for powered up isn't sensitive enough for delicate technic parts. I was hoping to convert some classic technic sets to Powered Up, but this is a big setback.

Battle Mode seems like a response to Mario Kart Live's AR elements. Just, y'know, without the AR elements or any sense of fun. Maybe they're planning to update it with a two-player mode? I noticed a lot of the marketing features 2 kids driving 2 cars. Perhaps they're holding off on it during the launch of the set, so it doesn't come across as 'hey, you just bought this expensive new car; now you gotta buy a second one to get the complete experience'. (Or maybe a 2-player battle mode was the plan, but Lego's marketing said 'nope, we're not convincing kids to spend €260 on two cars' and the designers tried to salvage the mode with a virtual opponent. Either way, not a great look, Lego.) Thanks for the review!
