The tune played by the Piper as the men went over the top is "Battle of the Somme" was written by Pipe Major Willie Lawrie of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. He wrote the song during the battle (as was tradition with Scottish pipers, and has been done as recently as the Falklands War with "Crags of Tumbledown") and it immediately became a hit with Scottish and Irish pipers. Lawrie was tragically killed during the Battle of the Somme, but his tune lives on as a memorial to the 420,000 British and Irish soldiers and 200,000 French soldiers who were wounded or killed in the bloody fields of France from July to November of 1916.

I’ve read many of the letters that men who served on the Western Front sent home to their families. There is nothing more heartbreaking than reading the words of men who know they are going to die, never to meet their loved ones in this world again. Even now, more than 100 years later, we should remember to give these brave men the reverence they are due for the sacrifices they made.

J.R.R Tolkien used many inspirations from his expirience from his wartime for his books. For example he saw a medic ridding on the battlefield, you can find him as the White-Rider (Gandalf the white) in the books, or he saw Dragons, Balrogs or Orcs in his enemies and the huge fires. He lost 2 of his 3 very good friends on the front. I´m glad he survived and had the chance to write this fantastic books. (I´m a great fan of him, and nearly read any of his books)

The dead marshes is a direct reference to this battle. The dead soldiers would be laying face up in a mortar crater in maybe a foot or 2 of water, much like the dead elves in the marshes. WW1 traumatized Tolkien in a very deep way, he hated war and death after that. It's why the battles in the book are so short.

@charley11885 жыл бұрын
i'd like to respectfully correct you, it wasn't to conserve energy. the battle of the somme had begun days before the boys went over the top. british generals wanted to concentrate heavy artillery fire on the german lines to weaken them before the attack, it was one of the biggest barrage the world has seen, at the time, spanning for many days. on the 1st, the generals had told the men that when they would walk over the fields, not a single german would be opposing them. the generals made a poor judgment... having heavy equipment, the walking british would be cut down like corn by enemy machine gun fire and artillery, for the german lines consisted of deeply dug trenches that could more or less support such heavy artillery barrages as the british one.

Well what about the innocent german and jews that got killed yes the allys saved them but what about the houses of the germans and their properties that were passed generation to generation and got destroyed by bombs and other the families that got traumatized by the fact that they could get killed any moment due to a bomb what about the people that got separated due to the berlin wall that was created by the "good guys" in order to take control of more turf resources and eventually political influence between the masses, i dont support any kind of nazi or antissemitism parties but even in these human atrocities even the good in a certain way can be bad "the good guys" were responsible to laucn the first nuke and kill thousands of innocent. Its quite ironic that the fact people say stuff like the good and the bad side even if they werent there at that time to make sure who was bad or wrong of course we all know that hitler was a maniac but dont forget that the other only joined the war to stop him to conquer the world (Even if it was impossible since germany at that time got killed by the Versailles document).

Sick stop motion! The only thing I’d do differently is have A few less frames for them walking, to make them look like they’re running, because they kind of seem to lack a sense of urgency, Which you’d expect if running into machine gun fire. Otherwise this is better than any LEGO battle I’ve ever seen. Edit: OK after doing some research I heard that the British generals told them they would be able to walk, but still, I’d expect a break in Formation and an increase in speed when machine guns open fire.
@sjonnieplayfull58595 жыл бұрын
The true tragedy was the generals claiming they could walk to the opposite side at ease because all enemy troops and trenches would be obliterated. During the days of bombardment the patrols reported germans singing in their trenches while under fire, as well as the barbed wire intact. During the way up the ranks, these reports changed to the enemy being eradicated allready, so might as well start walking... the generals did not want negative reports, so they got none. Same thing with the 'war is over before christmas' lie. Generals knew that with modern technology (trains and factories most of all) big alliances and conscription of all able bodies it would be a war of attrition. No way you can sell that, so they came up with lies that sounded nice. If any question why we died, It was because our fathers lied. (Forgot who wrote it. Sorry) edit: Rudyard Kipling, responsible for thousands of British volunteers with his early pro-war poems.

sjonnie playfull Gotcha. It was their own Chosen ignorance that led to their downfall.
@sjonnieplayfull58595 жыл бұрын
@@solvemproblerstudios5889 sorry to say, but those generals never truly fell. Worst they got was some mumbling ministers complaining about the death toll. Kinda like mum berating a child after setting the house on fire 'mummy is not happy with you, bad boy!' But maybe their shattered dream of walking into Berlin was terrible as it gets to them.

@@zexal4217 I mean they were, at least the British and French ones. German generals recognized a bit early on tbey aren't moving very much after shit got settled in so they were mainly defensive in a lot of campaigns.
