2006-7 seemed to be Legos most edgy phase, combine this with what agree is the darkest and best line of Bionicle (2007) and you have some pretty interesting years.

Lets not forget that Indiana Jones immediately followed it, which has some of the most war vehicles of any theme including some vehicles such as the T-55 based Jungle Cutter, bombers, machine guns, amphibious cars, everything. Agents was pretty violent to by Lego standards. Really was a particularly violent period of themes in the mid 2000s, which I kinda miss.

That helicopter is clearly based on the real life Soviet/Russian Mi-24 Hind attack/troop transport helicopter. Interestingly enough, the Hind was also one of the main inspirations for the design of the Republic LAAT Gunship from the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy/Star Wars The Clone Wars TV show. Sadly, given LEGO’s stance of military vehicles, we probably won’t get another helicopter set like that again anytime soon.

I live in the UK so I got the Dino 2010 chopper - it's crazy how different it is with the cage, and the whole back cockpit simply isn't there with some technic piping and other details to replace it including a detatchable trike. Still have it, absolutely gorgeous set - such nostalgia.

Recently I had the opportunity to purchase a sealed copy of the T1 - Typhoon at a reasonable price. Despite still being in the box the set still feels impressive as the box IS massive, especially with the front flap open where it reveals more info and images on the set. Though I don't plan on opening the set for a multiple reasons, it does feel great finally having this set, as I had none of them when I was younger, since I found out about this theme when I watched KZbin videos about Dino Attack and was enamored by the dinosaurs of this theme (This was around 7 years after Dino Attacks original release, so the sets were long gone from store shelves). I also have some of the dinosaurs from the line, and the T - Rex dwarfs practically any other Lego animal and fantasy creature lego has made. The raptor was always my favorite though, mainly due to the fact it looked like my favorite dinosaur at the time ceratosaurus. Also a fun fact about the pteranodon and the raptor, they share the same bodies, so if you switched the heads of the 2 somehow (It seems doable), you could get a green raptor and a yellow pteranodon.
@CheeseyStudios

That's so epic. I didn't even realize it had the flap on the box - it's been way too long since I first had that set, ha. I'd hang on to that for as long as you can - I can't imagine there's a lot of sealed copies left!

Fun fact: the Shadow minifig is meant to pay homage to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character from the movie Commando, while Digger is meant to pay homage to Sylvester Stallone’s character from Rambo. I do miss a lot of the 2000's and even early 2010's stuff. Current Lego playsets seem okay, but generally lack luster to what they used to be. Sure, nostalgia will always be a factor, and I heard something about Lego nearly going under around 2016(?), but it seems like a lot more care and creativity went into it earlier. The new collector's stuff still holds up and in many ways exceeds the old stuff, but for the kid whose parents aren't going to shell out for Lego Ideas level sets, it just gives the impression of a notable downgrade in quality.

Did anyone here ever figure out what the bar under the tail was for? It just connected to a while piece with an axle hole and kinda just hung there. Maybe it was a holdover from the European design?
@CheeseyStudios
@CheeseyStudios 2 жыл бұрын
While building it, my understanding of it was that it just a spacer to prevent the tail from being bent awkwardly due to the hinges. I double checked the Dino 2010 equivalent set's instructions, but nothing seems to attach there either. I definitely agree that it doesn't seem entirely necessary!

@@cirnospaghet So true 😂 It's crazy how flimsy these older sets could be. The standards are much higher today, but I'll always respect how far they pushed a small part count to make a massive set in the early 2000s!

Fun fact about the helicopter: one of the stickers on the side says : PLT: ‘Jazz’ Boucher, Nav: ‘Kid’ thorngood. PLT must be short for pilot and NAV navigator. All the minifigs that come in the sets are already named, so these are different people. I wonder why they aren’t in the sets, perhaps they were killed in action? Maybe this writing commemorates them and they were part of the same squad as everyone else, or maybe the helicopter used to be theirs and was taken over by digger and co after something happened to them. The real reason is probably a name change for the characters, but it’s still interesting to think of the implications of it.
