You know I couldn't agree more! LEGO's in-house themes has always been where LEGO is at its best.
@metroid7679 ай бұрын
This doesn’t solve the $300+ problem you’re talking about (yes I agree), but at least as licensed set, this is the easiest to ‘remove’ the license aspect. Just remove all the sidebuilds and minfigs and it’s just a castle set. Also as a celebration of DnD, this feels more of a genuine passion license than ‘quick we need to make Avatar toys! Quick, Minions is coming out! What’s the next thing? Gabby? Whats that? Who cares! Make it! Money Money Money’ THAT is the licensing mentality that needs to end immediately. One off licensed sets that come off with some genuine celebration and passion for the ip are a lot more tolerable, as it is more of a collectable rather than just straight merchandise! Also yes just bring back pirates and such.
@arno_nuehm_19 ай бұрын
Without the license it would just be a simple castle theme for kids. That's not the same.

@@metroid767 to be fair, mostly every licensed set is "quick this is coming out!" even lego star wars came out because phantom menace was in theaters. dnd does seem unique as there isn't anything that big coming out to co-incide with the lego set. that's just how companies operate, they couldn't put out a line of sets based on 1980's comedy hit "airplane", because it came out 40 years ago. recency is how most companies make money.

What annoys me about this set is that it could have been a great line with a Tavern set, a battle in the forest set, the gelatinous dungeon set, the tower set and the dragon set all at different price points and inculding figures to build up your party! Instead we're forced to buy a giant 360 dollar set if you want to have any of it. Follow the same four characters with different minifigs in each set (representing the new magic items they got), and start with a small set that's maybe a goblin or kobold raid for levels 1-4, go up to a larger set with Mind Flayers or a vampire attack on a tavern for the level 5-10, a bigger set still featuring a Beholder for 11-15, and then you throw out the Ancient Dragon for a big, several-hundred-dollar centerpiece set.

Even things that were probably unintentional, like the lack of detailing on the bridge, is exactly the kind of things that would happen in my games, where i would describe something in immaculate detail and completely forgo describing the thing right next to it. The build itself also has the same vibe as a lot of the dungeons i’ve ran, where parts of it seem completely intact and well maintained while other parts feel like the ruins of structures that were already ancient and decaying when they were built.

Has anyone pointed out the striking architecture and layout similarities between the castle and tower to 6097 Dark Lord’s Tower from the Fright Knights? It has the same tall tower with the same number of floors. (There is a fourth floor implied in the dnd set but since it’s ruins, it has crumbled away) The trap door is essentially in the same place. The floor with all the spell books, skull, cauldron, etc-same floor as 6097, implying to be Willa’s study. The protruding bridge and its support arch is the same extended outdoor platform of 6097. The fireplace (that rotates) behind Basil’s throne in 6097 lines up along the wall (albeit shifted more to the side) of the inn’s fireplace here, implying that the inn was constructed around Basil’s old fireplace on the outside of the tower. And the side door on the ground floor of 6097 lines up with the inn’s dungeon entrance. There are warning signs in Medieval Town Square warning of Basil and his dragon. Basil is in this year’s CMF. He could still use these ruins of his tower as a hideout. It’s isolated on a lake away from the Lion Knights and Falcon Knights but obviously close enough that Basil is an imminent threat to the town. So if you want to remove the DnD monsters and elements, this is the ruins of Fright Knight’s tower after a major battle in 1997, cementing its place in the story and timeline of today’s modern castle line. That’s how I see it.

Let me be frank - as a long time user of miniatures in my D&D, $300 is pretty standard for entry-level of using minis at the table top. I have spent WAAAAY more on Dwarves Forge over the years. Not to mention miniatures, set pieces, etc, etc. For 300 dollars, this is actually a pretty good price, IMHO, to get into using LEGO for your D&D game. Especially because you can simply merge all of the bricks from this set into your other LEGO bricks and make just about whatever you want. For those tight on budget tho - I strongly suggest going to flea markets and Goodwill stores. You can almost always find LEGO bricks and LEGO figs for super-cheap. People are always off-loading their LEGOs, because they amass a large collection and then out-grow them.

I think, especially since it's in collaboration with one of Lego's chief rivals (Hasbro, who owns Wizards of the Coast), they weren't willing to commit to a full theme, and instead leaned on the Ideas submission as a one-time collector's piece. What I think they succeeded at was capturing both the spirit of the game and the core of Lego by making the figures fully customizable. And the play features they sacrificed are being replaced by a full playable D&D campaign based on the set. I think they felt like they couldn't skimp on details-- because let's face it; D&D fans are all about details-- but wanted to make it playable as well for that same audience. I don't play D&D and I probably won't get this set, but I love fantasy and Lego Castle so I will probably look for these pieces and accessories on PaB

Holy crap, this thing's *massive.* I think my favorite part is the purple tentacle blob cyclops monster thing (idk what it's called, I'm not much of a D&D person) 1:17 They're called Beholders. I think the OwlBears are kind of neat, too. So are the Displacer beats, and I've seen Mimics all over the internet without knowing where they're from. You know what? I might look into Dungeons & Dragons lore, it seems interesting! 😅

I’m planing on getting this set or Barard dur but I’m having trouble deciding between the two. I love the unique fantasy feeling this set has but I really wish more pieces were put towards the build rather than the dragon. While Barard dur is more expensive it’s size and minifigures are both more impressive in my eyes. I was wondering what your thoughts are? As I haven’t seen this set in real life do you feel like it would prove satisfactory for someone committed to spending a good bit and really looking for that fantasy ascetic? Thanks!
@CheeseyStudios2 күн бұрын
It's a really good questions. Barad-dur is definitely the better looking model. If you're looking for a show-stopping display, that's the way to go. This set on the other hand has a lot more magic and whimsy to it. The D&D castle is going to be more fun to take out and show your friends. But it definitely doesn't look nearly as good. Hopefully that helps point you in the right direction!

Love this set so much! Great review, Cheesey! ♡ Really looking forward to this one, my wallet is not. I like how they have weapons, tools, potions, etc. laid around for the adventurers to find and loot! That beholder shield is so cool! As awesome as these giant sets are, I also wish Lego would make some smaller sets with the D&D theme.. I would’ve loved to have gotten an $80-100 more fleshed out tavern on its own, or smaller dungeons or ruins to explore. I’m lucky enough to have half a room to display Lego and I really have next to no space left. 😂

Okay so I don't know if the other minifigs are characters introduced in art before, (The dwarf cleric definitely isn't the one depicted in the PHB unless he got new clothes and armor) but that dragonborn bard immediately reminded me of the Bard monster statblock in Monsters of The Multiverse, which really looks like it could be the same person

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but for those that aren't familiar with D&D, the Red Dragon now looks like a reproduction of how Red Dragon's are portrayed in all of the official WotC art. I believe that Lego had to get final ok from WotC/Hasbro so that their IP is accurately represented in Lego form.
@CheeseyStudios9 ай бұрын
That makes a lot of sense
@tomm22138 ай бұрын
Unfortunately combining smaller cheaper sets often ends up in much less detail as in the harry potter modular green roof castle or the new daigon alley sets. I do like the idea of modular sets that are still very detailed tho, ie an inn similar in detail to the medieval blacksmith (which came with only 4 minifigures however). Amazing set love all the details. Seems fragile but the play features are all the hidden details and the play story not so much stuff like the trap door. Also regarding the price, LOTR Bard Dur is supposed to be released at about $100 more than this albeit with more pieces bit still!

@@CheeseyStudios I’m a go with my original answer and say it’s some kind of carnivorous carnivorous plant. If you look up pink, leafy creature and dungeons and dragons you get anything from a pink dragon which does not exist to plant people so that’s what I’m gonna go for.

One of the good reasons why the dragon was changed from the original idea is that the logo of the original DnD creator company TSR is the red dragon. This is a nice nod to that.

Nowadays it is rare that I see a set makes actually go out of my way to buy it. But this one does. Does it have flaws? Yes, I personally would have preferred a bit more articulation in the dragon, and maybe making so the tower can be split. But honestly, those are the only things I would actually consider to be problems with the build.

You're still gonna love the set. Overall, I think it's really cool and there's just so many fun things included!

I feel like the less detailed thing is a slight nod to DnD DMs (Dungeon Masters) not describing in detail what is in a scene they are telling the players. In a number of games I've played, the DM would just say that the players see castle or a tavern, or even a well, without really saying too much of what the place looked like.

We need D&D sets as a whole LEGO theme, I guarantee they’d be popular, especially the smaller sets as it seems many here would prefer. There’s so much potential for so many more D&D sets, they could get very creative with them as both LEGO and D&D encourage their players to do. I can imagine so many more play features through traps, and so many more diverse characters and monsters.

I'm not a D&D player, so may be I'm entirely wrong. I wish there's a wave of "Minecraft style" D&D sets with 30-100 dollar sets feathering different D&D locations and themes. This will be an easier entry point for D&D beginners, plus this allows players to customize maps. 300+set put me off as I'm not committed to the play feature, and don't have a room for such a big display
