Shoutout to whoever designed the UFO aliens. Not only are their helmets pretty reminiscent of the Predator helmet from the film, but the Alien leader's face print has mandibles and also shows very clear Predator inspirations. The UFO minifigures are iconic. I think the actual sets suffer just a bit because of those huge dish pieces, and the somewhat plain color scheme with so much gray. But the figures can't be beat, they're awesome.

One of my favorite memes is "You either die a specialty theme, or live long enough to see yourself become LEGO City." It truly is weird to see City just completely take over Space, but when you have Star Wars, Icons' licensed stuff, and Blue Cats sets, plus all of Ninjago's Mechs, it makes sense that a specific Space theme doesn't exist on its own. Dreamzzz also kind of carves up some of that Space pie with Z-Blob builds and Mr. Oz with all his science stuff, but Space has kind of generally meant Sci-Fi in the LEGO community, and there's plenty of it in LEGO, just not a dedicated theme. City's really the only thing remaining that's an original pillar of LEGO if you look at Town, Space, Castle, and Pirates, and while I'm not complaining about some gap years, City kind of taking over other themes is always weird when to me it should really just be real life stuff, not even near future like from a few years ago, and a bit of what's being done here. But I don't know anything about marketing, so whatever, still cool to see some neat Space stuff coming from LEGO.
@CheeseyStudios Жыл бұрын
I suppose when you look at that way, we've never really been hurting for space. I suppose that's how LEGO justifies no Castle theme either - there's HP for that.
@BackflipBrickfilms Жыл бұрын
1: you’re right about space in that way. City eating it up meant to me that Lego City is a city-state which is running these missions. Also: in no way does Lego HP justify the lack of Castle!

The "alien queen" from Alien Conquest is not the alien queen, they are the commander named Hypaxxus-8 The Alien Villianess figure you showed I'm pretty sure is implied to be the queen (a few CMFs had descriptions on lego's website and her's mentions being the ruler of an empire) Also the whole "different names in different regions" thing led to one Insectoids character having an unfortunate name here in the US
@CheeseyStudios Жыл бұрын
That makes sense! Scared to look up the Insectoids name lol
@VezonWireless Жыл бұрын
@@CheeseyStudios The US name in question is Gypsy Moth, sharing her name with a real world species of moth. In the 1990s, it was just an innocent name that easily evokes both the Zotaxians' nomadic nature and their insectoid vehicles. But nowadays, there's been strong backlash against the word "gypsy", so there's a growing contingent of LEGO fans who would prefer that we use the character's original Danish name, Navigator Sharp.

I really liked this video! The KZbin premiere music in the background was a nice touch. I always love Lego’s original space themes & this City wave just feels like a Space theme in disguise so it sells well. Personally, my favorites are the themes I grew up with, Space Police 3 with all the crazy aliens & Galaxy Squad which is the only Lego theme I own 100% of the sets from. The mosquitoids are probably so expensive because the antennas which I noticed were absent from the group shot at 7:34 were so easy to lose. I know I definitely lost a few as a kid. I might have to pick up some of those other aliens I wasn’t around for like the Zotaxians or Mars Mission Alien Commander because those look really cool.

Great video! Even though there were no official aliens in sets until the 1990s (and Lego infamously shut down the idea of Seatron as an alien-based theme), you could still find them in the early days of the themes! Lego Idea book (6000) from 1980 showcases the story of two minifigures visiting all three core themes (Town, Castle and Space) and in the Space segment they encounter aliens! They're all brick-built, mostly by using various elements as heads instead of a regular figure head, but still. I had that book as a kid and it was enormously influential on me in getting me to invent my own builds. Another early official Lego product that features aliens is the two-part comic book series "Jim Spaceborn" written and drawn by danish cartoonist Frank Madsen. The two stories came out between 1984 and 1987 depending on what country you lived in and featured a group of classic Lego astronauts tossed across the galaxy, Voyager-style. And of course they encounter lots of aliens, though in these comics the aliens are sometimes depicted as not being made from bricks, which bummed me out as a kid.

That Insectoids commercial in 2:18 stuck with me ever since LEGO put it as a complimentary video on MyLEGONetwork (gold star if you remember that site). Having some kid get instant insect armor or whatever was going on here was a rather gripping visual to pair with a theme where the aliens that time around were still rather human/minifig looking all things considered. The Martians remain my favorite too, and I'm all for advocating that eventually LEGO redesigns the figures in someway to reintroduce them. I absolutely adored Mars Mission when I was a kid. Another thing that's changed in Lego is something that they've pretty much stopped doing is "army vs. army" themes, which 2007 Castle, Mars Mission, and Alien Conquest were. Nowadays everything has to be about a small cast of characters, and it's honestly sorta boring.. Mars Mission always had a bit of a horror element to me, not in-your-face or overly spoopy, but remember that trailer of the astronaut running? Followed by "something's out there..", then the flash games, where you were running from something, and if you failed too many times it was implied you were eaten? Not to mention the AWESOME flash RTS that was crystalien conflict. To me, as a child who grew up playing RTS games, it felt like Lego's version of Starcraft just with a much more clean aesthetic and not a scrappy "rugged" look. We weren’t attached to any one group of characters and each set was like a battle pack with varying vehicles and scenes for either faction with the story told through details in the sets. Lego seems afraid to have real "battle" themes now, everything has to be attached to a small group of characters rather then a whole faction and it's a bit disappointing. I know themes with main characters are much easier to get attached to, but to me I enjoyed how some themes had "blank slates", it let you make up your own story for these characters which imo let you be even more creative. Also the designs for the aliens are just so awesome, the fact that they glow in the dark is so cool!

LEGO definitely doesn't have the same vibes anymore, and I miss that a lot. I do feel the 2000's really were a second golden age for the company.

My favorite thing about Rench from Space Police 3 is the uniform - he's a member of the Blacktron Gang! I really want to amass an amount of different figure parts with Blacktron prints so I can put together a a colorful little gang of them, the abundance of references Blacktron gets in other themes is great for that.

I'm betting this new space line was supposed to be its own theme, but they probably weren't confident in that given how short every other space theme lasts. So they probably threw it into City to ensure longevity. After all, City, Star Wars, Marvel, and Ninjago refuse to die.

I grew up with a few sets of those first 3 alien series but grew out of Lego not long after. I remember being disappointed once I got the 2nd series aliens in-hand because I thought their clear green helmets would be a similar elongated shape to the cool helmets of the series 1 aliens.
@CheeseyStudios Жыл бұрын
Can't beat the original UFO helmets. Those are just incredible!

Insectoids and especially Life On Mars were my jam as a kid, and I really do love that they emphasized a peaceful meeting of societies with the latter. I have plenty of respect for subsequent stuff as sets and I know other people would have grown up with those, but I'll admit their narrative framing always rubbed me the wrong way in comparison. So that this new CitySpace theme seems to be going back to a more optimistic take on first contact is really nice to see ^.^ That being said, I really love the first UFO designs as an inventive and imposing take on a villainous alien faction, and that helmet design remains a favorite of mine to this day, and it's cool to see how that design language carried on into Insectoids. I think Life On Mars will always be my favorite for the sheer variety on display, but honestly all of these are pretty darn cool in their own right.

I think my favourite Lego alien is the exclusive inverted colours Buggoid from Galaxy Squad’s Star Slicer. Normal Buggoids are pretty cool already, but seeing one with the colour scheme swapped is even cooler! There’s one slight error in the video, the tentacle legged alien from Alien Conquest is not a queen - he’s a military commander, Hypaxxus-8 to be exact
@Mr_G_Daddy Жыл бұрын
I saw a new lego minifigures space series that includes a new blue alien buggoid figure. It looks amazing. Could probably use it as a special rank or leader of the buggoids
@CosmicMaddness Жыл бұрын
@@Mr_G_Daddy I’ve seen that! The torso printing looks spot on to the old buggoids. I’ve always seen the inverted Buggoid as some kind of brute version. Size differences can’t be represented that well with minifigures, but I like to imagine he’d be a lot bigger and bulkier than his standard Buggoid counterparts. The new blue one looks like he’d be even bigger, though maybe not as much of a tank. Perhaps special forces?
@Mr_G_Daddy Жыл бұрын
@@CosmicMaddness yes. It would be cool if it was some sort of night vision apex hunter like the predator or maybe a mutated scorpion type which could be called a scorpioid.

I really want an Area 51 styled set or something that celebrates LEGOs vast history of Aliens, like having one or two of all of them in one set, along with scientists and MIB minifigs and such. Even a crashed UFO being examined, in the style or near the style of the first UFO sets would be awesome! I doubt they would do it, sadly, but I would love to buy a set like that. Another cool idea, maybe sets that pretend to be normal LEGO City sets but are actually aliens hiding in plain sight, ala Invader Zim, maybe in a classic 1950s style! The aliens could be like either a double sided mkngig head, one side "human" the other alien, or like alien head masks you can swap out on the heads. There's just something about this UFO alien themes that I feel could be have become awesome and fun! (I guess many would consider aliens and UFOs creepy, but I grew up with many, MANY horror ideas as normal, so I find it cool, or something?)

Galaxy squad had easily some of the best mech and ship designs I’ve seen out of Lego to this day. The simple but bold color pallet with three factions all united in design by white looked super clean. It also had an overall bulky esthetic that nicely separated it from anything else I’ve seen, maybe except for the Rex fist ship from the second Lego movie.

My favourite aliens were the ones from life on Mars. There was the alien in the purple suit, she was called Cassiopeia after the constellation, and when we learned the letters of the alphabet we had to bring things to class that start with the various letters, so when we learned C I brought Cassiopeis with me. I must have been probably 7 at the time, as I always had my birthday in the first week of the new school year pretty much. I have fond memories of that space station, when I saw it at the mall it was constructed as a big set behind glass but you could operate the pipe system. I really wanted to have it and then for my birthday my mother and godmother got it for me, because obviously the set was way to be for my age, but I loved to play with it in the years to come. Thank you for the good memories! Still got all my Lego, and I plan to rebuilt all the sets I had. Only problem could be, that the turquoise arms became kinda brittle, and there haven't been new ones produced in that color since then, as far as I know.
@CheeseyStudios Жыл бұрын
The brittle arms is really unfortunate. I've had a few snap on me as well 😪
