I used to hate that Tolkien made the elves long for the sea; it just seemed way too sad to me. But now I appreciate the melancholy of it, and think it makes the story just that much more poignant. Your song evoked that beautifully.
@matthewdoel45818 жыл бұрын
Laura Andrews Well, the elves and even men longed for the land of the West I suppose, over the straight Road. Or rather the Undying Lands in Aman. "Lands there are to West of West, where night is quiet and sleep is rest. Guided by the Lonely Star, beyond the utmost harbour-bar, I'll find the havens fair and free, and beaches of the Starlit Sea." Interesting lore behind it. It was the elves known as the Teleri, or the sea elves, that made the White ships which sailed to the west :)
@RobertLocksley3857 жыл бұрын
Well done Matthew. You have the truth of it. The Quendi were permitted to return home for their place in Arda, but the Atani were not for both their role in Atalante and the Second Theme of Iluvatar. The Quendi may envy us at the End for our Gift of Departing, but they may yet return to Aman and the blessedness that only existed when the Valar walked the earth.

I used to cry every time I see "I will leave, I will leave the woods that bore me", because whenever I see this sentence I can imagine a picture of Legolas walking away from where he was raised and where he's father is, sailing to the West all alone, and never being able to return again...

I once travelled to Colombia and there I visited the Nevados, the snowy peaks in Manizales. Once we got there, the tour guide told us "Apreciate what you're seeing, because due to climate change in less than a decade this is all going to vanish". I was surprised with what she said, but after that I saw some old pictures of the same Nevados and there was indeed way more snow back then. A few weeks later, coincidently, I started reading the LOTR trilogy, and while reading about the elves I remembered those snowy peaks I visited: It was something truly magical, but I know that I, and a lot of people, will probably never see them and feel that way again, not because of money or time, but because it was simply comming to an end. And suddenly I could identify myself with Samwise and all the other characters who saw the elves, knowing that they would all soon be gone from Middle-Earth, and so would all the magic they represented. It's a really depressing thought, but now I know how true it is.

Ulmo would have spoke to him in his time. When he built the grey ship in Ithilien with his friend Gimli Gloin's son, his future was made. As one of the Fellowship, he had a mightier fate than his kin, and so sailed into the West at the last.

Well said and done, young lady. You are quite correct. Fond regards to you and your studious efforts, from a forty-year Tolkien scholar.
@RobertLocksley3856 жыл бұрын
That was his fate, netwitch56. It was made during Eru's First Theme in the Music of the Ainur. The gulls of Ulmo (like unto the Eagles of Manwe Sulimo) speak to all the Children of Iluvatar on behalf of the Valar who love them, but the First Song holds the Quendi to their ultimate end. If you have read the Valaquenta then you will know of Tuor and his people, a fate made by Ulmo himself that leads to the Tale of Earendil.
@RobertLocksley3856 жыл бұрын
Do not punish yourself my lady. Time gives us understanding of many things, and you have kept what you read those many years ago close to your heart. Now you share those stories with us that you love, and we understand because we love the same story. The Quenta Silmarillion was written when even my grandparents were children, but I love that those tales go beyond England and the reasons why they were written. Welcome to Arda, and the beginning of the World when we all were young. If you ever feel the need to share your hopes, dreams and the tale of your life, then you know where to find friends with whom you can share your story. After all, JRRT would have liked us to tell our tales.

This is beautiful! You have done a lovely bit of work that I think would have made JRRT happy to hear. Your music certainly captured the songs meaning and left me missing the sea from when I spent a year living in a sailboat, sailing on weekends and holidays. At one time I was very much caught up in wanting to sail around the world in my 30’ sloop. Then I upgraded to a 40’ sloop as the fever rose. But alas I was needed (and one time wanted) elsewhere, so I gave up that dream. Though it has not given up on me since I dream about it frequently. I love the Elves and their melancholy. How could one not feel a bit sad after living a few thousand years, losing friends, both Elf and not-elf. And, in the case of Elrond whose brother chose the “Gift of Men”, and then some 2,000 years later his daughter died the same. But with the great deeds they’d done and the many tragedies that befell them individually and as a people their sorrow would become eventually very palpable. The only medicine for that kind of sickness can only be found West of West. Thank you for this beautiful work. Best wishes in 2022 from Texas, John The Inscrutable.
