It’s 2001, little over a month after 9/11. The world feels grey and different and all hope is sucked away by uncertainty. Everyone is looking for a distraction. Dad and I drive to a plaza a town over. The parking lot is derelict and almost abandoned, holding no more than a closed hardware shop and a video store. We walk across a football field of weathered asphalt and spinning autumn leaves, hiding our hands from the cold. “Remind me to get some popcorn for mom”. Inside we separate and I find my way to the game aisle. A new PS2 title sits alone on a shelf with one copy peaking out from behind the display case. It’s a crime game with guns and cars in big city under an overcast sky. It felt like all the days since September. I take it and we check out. Once home I go to my room and open the disk tray and nudge it back in. Music plays. Welcome to liberty city. One of the Best game experiences ever.

I was in the 3rd Grade, living at a cousin's house as my family struggled severely with income and how our money was spent. I had a PS2 with a good handful of games on it granted to me by a friend of my grandma's. My favorite in that bunch at the time was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. I loved everything about it and would play it everyday after school and go on sprees with my cousin, endless fun and endless hours wasted when we should've been doing schoolwork. One day, the disc became so scratched to the point where the console couldn't read the game anymore. I was distraught and my cousin set himself on a mission. To get me a new copy of San Andreas at a local game store! He begged and begged his mom to take him and she eventually obliged, taking the San Andreas copy with. I was left alone with nothing but the house maid and a PS2 with some games I've never played before. I just tossed a few different games in to pass the time, and do keep in mind, these were all in a carry case, and after a long time of not knowing what to do, I saw at the very bottom of the case, a game similarly named to San Andreas. That being... Grand Theft Auto III. I popped that baby in and played. And played. I was glued to the game, despite it not being San Andreas, I was incredibly engaged by it. I probably played for two hours by the time my cousin came back with San Andreas and know the shock in his face when I told him "No, dude! This game is way better!" He didn't believe me, so I let him rampage for a bit and he couldn't really tell the difference first. As some time passed, I think I now know why the game glued me in far more than San Andreas did. The police force when rampaging are far more aggressive and faster than the ones in San Andreas. Rather than them using tactical ways of stopping the player (spike traps, popping tires with bullets, P.I.T. maneuvering), they slammed into you at full force, even at the cost of their own lives or the pedestrians. Grabbing the Firetruck in Shoreside Vale and playing chicken with a 4 Star Wanted Level on the bridge above the Cochrane Dam might be some of the funniest moments I've had with my cousin in any game ever. Police vehicles getting sent FLYING literal hundreds of feet off the bridge and into the water below was exhilarating, and I'll never forget those moments. To the friend of my grandma's who gave me his PS2, I hope you're doing well. You seemed like a really nice man and you indirectly introduced my favorite game of all-time to me: Grand Theft Auto III.

Let me explain why GTA games like these were the best. It was not confined to gaming physics, not obsessed by making things life-perfect. It was about a man with a cube hand, a cylindrical rocket launcher, a car that steers like a housefly with a pentagon shaped steering wheel. It was about the crap mouth to voice sync. It was about being a little kid killing people. It was about doing the most heinous crimes in the most magnificent way possible. Sometimes, crap is better. It is not a HD game abiding by the laws of physics. But boy is it amazing.
@Ivanka5149 жыл бұрын
JohnnyKlebitz77 You know, times had changed. In 2000, we don't care about HD textures, HQ and realistic music, very accurate animations or sharp models. We don't care. We cared about storyline, main character and missions. We cared about gameplay and its length. In 2015 this animations looks ugly and funny. But in 2000? That... that was AMAZING. Now, we care about graphic and music. Not storyline. It's sad, isn't it? I love GTA III, and this is my favourite part of this amazing universum. :)
@alex01230ROBLOX9 жыл бұрын
TheKawusiaa I don't really think this is all true, for some reasons... First of all, I feel like game developers are always trying to do their best to fit the theme/style of the game, but when that theme is set, it depends on what the graphics will be. For example, cod (ew), they push to have a realistic looking fps game... so they will try to make the most HQ textures they can. But take an amazing game like The Walking Dead or Life is Strange, which both have the same style of textures (discount a few things), yet they don't make them to be 4k resolution and instead focus on the story-line. But usually when graphics are a main part of the game during development and even sometimes afterwards, it can also cut down on how good the story-line may be, and how the game works, because $$$ goes different places, people shift from making the body movement of certain characters in a cutscene to making a grass texture nicer... Of course, there are some differences, like gta v, rockstar is such a huge company, and really rich too, they can spread out their teams... What I am trying to say is, saying that no one cares about gameplay and it's all about graphics is not true unless you love playing cod and battlefield... indie games seem to focus way more on gameplay than graphics. Also, looking back on many companies, it is pretty obvious they tried to make the graphics nicer each game. But it's just that they didn't make them a huge focus.... Maybe I went too far off of topic...
@aldxbaran9 жыл бұрын
Lord Humungus That's how it still is. You shouldn't be so stuck in the past, I honestly see later GTA games as a huge improvement upon the older ones. TheKawusiaa The graphics that GTA V has are great, but nobody focuses on them. They focus on creating mayhem, or just having fun with the story mission, playing online with other people, etc. Destructive fun, that how GTA was and always has been about. I think you've leaned more towards the "Old is better than new!" bandwagon because it represents a more sophisticated level of taste. I don't see how the animation in GTA V looks "ugly", it's actually very very well made and a huge improvement. I'm positive in my statement that you are on the "old > new" bandwagon, you say "we", representing the entire gaming community as of 2015, which is inaccurate. I'm very very positive a LOT of GTA players don't care about HD textures, HQ or "realistic music" (..realistic music? Really?..) or any other thing you said. I'm sure a lot of them see that it's cool and all, but don't only care about it. *Edit*: Also, I realized that you seem to leave out the fact that Rockstar has always tried to make GTA look realistic from GTA 3, and made it the best they could with the limitations. TL;DR : You're blinded by nostalgia; your comments were just you jumping on the "old is better than new" bandwagon.
@alex01230ROBLOX9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that could be a possibility in people's opinions. I am going to rephrase what I said. Growing up, I had a ps2, a gamecube, and a pc that basically was for Age Of Mythologies. Next, the gamecube was basically a lot of cool games like mario, and whatnot. The last, ps2, had pretty much everything. The game that stood out the most for me? GTA. I had GTA Vice, III, and SA. I'd have to say my favorite for the time was Vice, I just basically caused mayhem. Just like every person my age on that game, for the most part. I mean, I also played the others. III was a bit darker for my taste, as a little kid, and SA was fun but just seemed different. Looking back on it, all 3 are amazing none the less. Thing is, I feel like nothing's changed in terms of actual gamer's thoughts on gaming as a whole. Back then, it was about having the funnest games to play, but it was clear that developers really pushed being able to have more on screen, to make that steering wheel more circular, to make that trash can a trash can, to make little papers that spawn out of no where just fly with the wind... and it was clear that the more developers could do with the game, the more everyone was like "OMG LOOK AT THIS IT'S A HUGE IMPROVEMENT LOOK IT'S A PLANE IT LOOKS LIKE A REAL LIFE PLANE" (I use that loosely; my point is just that everyone loved the nicer graphics and more on screen, but everyone knew that the story was more important to make a good game). Everyone was pretty shocked when mario has nicer graphics, when guns looked like guns... at least to my understanding... And now, I still find it really amazing. Games out with 4k graphics, rain making your car slip if you go faster, walking into the water causes water lines up to where you walked... But still, a game isn't fun without a good storyline. Anyone who actually is a gamer would know that. This is the reason Call Of Duty doesn't have the same feel as The Walking Dead, or that Titanfall doesn't have the same feel as Life Is Strange... In the end, if you think that graphics = gameplay, you really need to rethink gaming as a whole. Obviously many many gamers LOVE having 4k textures, and amazing TXAA effects, and gorgeous rain and water effects, but we know that the gameplay is really what matters. Newer games are coming out with amazing new ideas. I know I may have mentioned gta a lot, but for example... Rockstar has always tried their hardest at making new games, and with GTA, it was obvious they loved doing it, too. It is amazing what they did with 7 year old hardware on gta v (xbox360/ps3). It isn't wrong to say that gaming has changed since those days, but it's wrong to say that it took a turn for the worst. There will always be amazing games coming out to play, and beautiful soundtracks to compliment it, too.
