Glad you enjoyed this movie! Little factoid, none of the reactors I've seen who've watched this movie or thier commenters caught (at least that I've noticed) that the police officer who pulls Neal and Del over late in the movie is played by Mike McKean AKA Mr. Green from Clue. On a more personal note, Del's reveal and the ending has hit me differently ever since my fiancee died unexpectedly back in 2011. Hits harder, and I identify with him more than I used to. I know how much he misses his wife, because still miss my fiancee even after all this time. We loved each other and had seven years together. A part of her still lives on, at least, in our son. But I'll never forget her. She was also my first love, which made it both harder and more special.

Great reaction Leia like always, I love this movie i remember when Cami reacted to it. John Hughes at the peak of his powers, with two masterful comedians at theirs Martin and Candy. There are some fun-facts about it, this movie is inspired by John Hughes’s own hellish trip from New York City to Chicago. Before he became a filmmaker, Hughes worked as a copywriter for the Leo Burnett advertising agency in Chicago. One day he had an 11 a.m. presentation scheduled in New York City on a Wednesday, and planned to return home on a 5 p.m. flight that same evening. Winter winds forced all flights to Chicago to be canceled that night, so he stayed in a hotel. A snowstorm in Chicago the next day continued the delays. The plane he eventually boarded ended up being diverted to Denver. Then Phoenix. Hughes didn’t make it back until Monday. John Candy arrived with lots of exercise equipment in tow. On the first day of shooting, the crew brought in treadmills, weights, and other exercise equipment for Candy to use in his hotel suite. Martin said Candy “never went near any of it once.” McClurg who is probably best known as Grace, Principal Rooney’s secretary in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, played the St. Louis car rental employee upon whom Neal dropped 18 F-bombs. For the first few takes, McClurg simply raised her finger and had a standard phone conversation with a customer. Then Hughes told her to improvise talking on the phone about Thanksgiving. In the scene that goes back and forth between Neal trying to sleep next to Del clearing his sinuses and Neal’s watching TV alone in their bed, she is somehow watching She’s Having a Baby, which wouldn’t be released in theaters until February of the following year. Kevin Bacon stars in that movie, and made a cameo in this film as the guy who out-hustles Neal in getting a cab. Some people believe Bacon who was officially listed in the credits as “Taxi Racer” was playing his She’s Having a Baby character, Jake, in that scene. Another cameo was the future Star Trek: Voyager star Jeri Ryan that made her acting debut in this movie. She was one of the passengers on the bus ride and couldn’t help but laugh at Martin and Candy’s antics. In the original ending, Del followed Neal all the way home. In the train scene, where Neal thinks about Del and laughs, Martin didn’t know the camera was rolling. To get the new ending he wanted, Hughes and editor Paul Hirsch went back to look for footage they previously didn’t think would be used. Hughes had kept the cameras rolling in between takes on the Chicago train, without his lead’s knowledge, while Martin was thinking about his next lines. Hughes thought Martin had a “beautiful expression” on his face in that unguarded moment, which he inserted into the film. A version of this story ran in 2017; it has been updated for 2022. Keep up the good work.

Great movie, especially during the holidays. One of those once a year movies you dont want to know all to well, me and my mom and brother would always sit down to watch this during the holidays, it was hilarious and heartwarming. Mom always teared up when john candy talked about his wife after steve martin laid into him about his character. It was always a moment that dwells deep. As for referencing those that have past as present tense, i find it easier to talk about my brother and mom as if their still alive because talking about them to others id rather have the experience of how i remember them, and not how i miss them.

I guess Kevin Bacon just happened to be in the area and available for a quick scene at that time, because the production timing between those two movies is fairly close, but the filming locations weren’t. _She’s Having A Baby_ was filmed from September through December 1986, and _Planes, Trains and Automobiles_ started filming in February 1987. Then, despite being filmed first, _She’s Having A Baby_ wasn’t released until February 1988.

Hey Leia, do you Uber? 😏😂😜😂🤪 There's a deleted scene were the thief first shows up as a pizza delivery guy & he saw the extra cash they had & later on comes back at night to steal it. Also, no, he wasn't trying to get away with it, Del literally said that he was gonna send the money back If he only got Neal's adress, which he didn't, and Del also put Neal's creditcard back in the wallet. You should go back to that part & listen to the dialogue one more time.... There's a monologue were Del explains how he lived his life after the death of his wife, but they never filmed it which is a damn shame because John Candy would have delivered that monologue so perfectly, it would have easily been one of the most memorable scenes from this movie!

There's a back story that got written out of the movie, that Neil's wife had been suspecting him of having an affair, because he spent so much time at his job in New York. This trip exacerbated those suspicions, because he was delayed an extra two nights for what should have been a two hour flight, plus he didn't call the second night because the motel phone was locked (He would have to pay extra to unlock it, after giving his very expensive watch to the clerk). When she saw that Del Griffith was a real person, along with his trunk, that evaporated her suspicions. So their hug and kiss was more than just for the extra two days it took him to get home. If you watch the credits all the way to the end, there's another funny scene at the end.

You may have thought that Susan's reaction to seeing Del was a little strange. Thats because there was a cut subplot where Susan thought that Neal was lying to her about all these shenanigans that kept preventing him from getting home and that Del was a woman whom Neal was cheating on her with. Her reaction to seeing Del was abject relief because it meant Neal was telling the truth the entire time.

When you think about it Neil is right about Del. He kicks his shoes off on the plane, uses up all the towels in the bathroom, spills beer on the bed, nearly kills Neil in a car crash and sets a car on fire he paid for with Neil's credit card... Del is a very rude and inconsiderate man.

Yep, and John Candy is probably the only actor that could have made the character endearing enough to be redeemable.

"Did you even make it through security", back then airport security hardly existed. Your families could go to the terminals with you and everything. It was cool.

Well KZbin is like the Sunday Night Movie on network television with advertisers. That’s how people have to look at reactions with lots of commercial breaks and toning down the language.

Maybe John Hughes should have written and directed the 'Pink Panther' movies of the 2000s!!!😊

I can’t believe these reactors don’t know who these actors are… she only knows Steve Martin as that other actor from the Pink Panther remake… she’s completely unaware that he’s one of the most legendary comedians of all time
