Its nice that Leica resurrected the CL model name/nomenclature/style. To reinforce the point, if you attach 'full-frame' M or R-Mount lenses, you'll experience more depth-of-field for the FOV, so they're going to be cropped. i.e. A 50mm lens will be the field of view of a slight tele 75mm, but the DOF of a 50mm.

Great review thank you! Good point about social media compressing photos, why have so many megapixels on a camera, or get full frame or medium format. I guess thats why M43 is also very popular! Leica CL really interests me :)

So you say there is an advantage to using the M lenses? I already have a few M lenses so I will check this out!

The L-Mount Alliance makes the TL and CL series cameras viable. I looked strongly into the Leica T (typ 701), yet, despite its stunning chassis, it had so many compromises and externalised costs in order to use M-lenses with. The performance wasn't there, it had compromised focus assistance for manual lenses etc. In a less premium camera I could accept that, or at least afford it, but it basically precluded the use of my existing M-lenses, and closed in on the price of an M once the EVF, adaptor, and an AF lens for general use were factored in (probably more than an M since I could use an M for many years without any further expenses.) The Alliance now means that the M-adaptor can be used with Panasonic and Sigma cameras (especially looking forward to using them with Foveon) with better capabilities, and with Sigma ART lenses, yet I can add an aesthetically appealling Leica at my leisure knowing that it's not an orphan that's difficult to use, or add a Leica lens as a prize-piece knowing that the mount won't disappear into obscurity (part of the appeal of the M-mount lenses is their longevity and adaptability). I was disappointed when the CL came out rather than a TL with an EVF, as the M-like styling is badly marred by the unharmonic placements across the top-plate; it's not clear to me why they didn't absorb the outline of the EVF module into a taller chassis that slopes down before the instrumentation area, nor why the top LCD is placed so unceremoniously between those dials without breathing space or matched scale. I guess I evaluate a luxury piece quite differently. Firstly, it must be functionally competitive, then it must be aesthetically uncompromised and assured to be worthwhile and fun to use for a long time. I like the idea of using a TL3 with an EVF (+pref tilt-screen) and effective manual focussing with M-lenses, and the Sigma DC DN 56mm and 16mm Contemporary (aps-c) lenses. If you've read this far, I commend you ;) Stay gold

Tl2 is a bit better than CL and if price is a big factor than TL2 is $1000.00 cheaper . Very good honest review .

Thanks for watching. While both have APS-C sensors they are different cameras. We are debating on revisiting the CL with all the lenses to see how it performs.

Excellent review as always, Bobby. But, does this have focus peaking? :P I have the SL mostly for video and some print, the original Leica T with the built in flash on the fly, but this looks stellar and compact! I'm tempted!

Isaiah Rodriguez Thanks for watching. Yes it does have focus peaking. This is a really nice compact Leica that will compliment the SL.

Thanks for the feedback- with Focus peaking we have a practical winner with the CL. I can pass the Leica-T to my wife for her fashionable selfies now, haha. I rather get the CL vs. an iPhone X, way to go Leica! We'll be in touch Bobby. IG: @isaiahphotons

ACID SNOW sooner or later you will get an M. The CL while very nice is a step towards an M or SL in the long run.

I want to like it, but I can't. I feel like Leica knows that they have a cult following and are only making cameras that will make them happy. I just can't help but compare this new CL to a Fujifilm camera. Why doesn't the CL have weather sealing? Why doesn't the LCD screen have a tilty-flippy feature? And so on and so forth. If this is going to be an enthusiast camera that is geared towards social media, then it should be made with those features in mind. For someone who may consider the Leica, they just have to look at the Fujifilm and compare. The Fuji will win unless someone really just wants the brand name and a red dot. I like Leica, but I can never recommend the digital offerings anymore, even if the lenses are amazing.

Rejor111 valid points, especially when you look at specs alone. For many owning a Leica is for one to feel part of a company that has a rich history in photography. Additionally their top end lenses are some of the best made in my opinion. The IQ is quite stunning. Having said that Fujifilm makes some great cameras. They are feature rich, and produce great images etc. In this price range and sensor size it’s definitely more competitive and will be interesting to see how the CL does.
@Rejor1116 жыл бұрын
Well, the problem with that is, the Leica lenses will still perform better on the Leica than the Fuji. Why? Because of software. The Leica will apply the lens correction to the lenses attached to it, including the M mount lenses. The Fuji can't. So, out of camera, you will still get better photos from M lenses on the CL than you will (possibly) on the Fuji. That said, I seriously doubt the differences are major. The majority of people won't see it, and won't care. Leica is great for their film cameras. But digital? I am still on the fence if Leica is going to last in the digital era as long as it has in the film era. IMO Fujifilm will beat Leica in the long run, so far.
