This video is a primer about the finishes Leica makes and the patina they acquire. Some KZbin watchers have noticed that we do not cover all the cameras and finishes in this video. There do exist other finishes. Also - a correction: Not all Leica cameras are made of brass. Just the ones in this video. Most are made of brass, but not all models. Nothing more interesting when Dan stacks M bodies on top of each other like some Jenga game creation. :-)

Just a side note: not ALL Leica Ms have brass top plates. On late M4-Ps and particularly classic M6s Leica used zink plates, which are harder and more durable (they crack rather than dent and collapse if hit hard) but they don't 'brass' the same way as painted tops do, and tend to grow blisters after decades form impurities in the alloy. Theoretically they can galvanise into zink powder if the surface treating is blemished but for that you need to soak them in salt water for a long time. I own both zink and brass top Ms - they have their own aesthetics but naturally the painted brass ones are more desirable. The zink M6 black chrome is more matte and fades into slate grey instead of brassing. Collectors don't go near those cameras. That said, those classic and TTL M6s sell for less and you can snatch up a good bargain for a fantastic user. Hope it helps.

Csaba Farkas excellent info! Coincidentally, neither does the M Typ 262. It has an aluminum top plate.

There you go. Now I learned something! Bottom line: brass rules!

It could be ordered in Black Chrome through the A-La-Carte program but yes you’re right, they typically were (are) black paint.

How long does it take for a black paint to have that patina
@TamarkinCamera5 жыл бұрын
Tazmanian Devil the more use the camera gets the more patina it acquires. The result depends on the exact type of enamel and how it is applied. Leicas typically take years to brass with lots of use.

Good video but I noticed that you have not commented on the M7 with respects to what it is made of...

Leica mp not a chrome one, they are paint lacier only( glossy finish). Some few chromes was made only custom for clients.

M10 also made from Brass?
@AtelierMarsViolet6 жыл бұрын
Brass with either a black chrome or silver chrome finish.
@dan_tamarkin6 жыл бұрын
Yes but the finish is a chromed brass like the M6 and M7 for example
@dan_tamarkin6 жыл бұрын
Tommy Plouffe yes that is correct
@dan_tamarkin6 жыл бұрын
My mistake - the M6 is chromed zinc not brass

So, those old dirty scuffed shoes that I like to wear are actually more beautiful than new ones?
@marc66526 жыл бұрын
More beautiful when it's worn... Only a Leica fan and wistful people can look at a camera like this. I'm stunned to see wealthy clients worshiping to obsolete and outdated cameras like those old Leica.
