Thanks for the photos and the overview of the new M. I have the M10 Monochrom and, as pointed out in the Red Dot Forum video on that camera, the high ISO performance of the new sensor (which was developed parallel to the one in the M10 R) allows you to set the camera to always use a faster shutter speed to avoid the effect of camera shake without giving up anything on image quality. I've tried that out on the Monochrom and it seems to work just fine. Also, as you noted, the sensor reflects the advances in technology since the previous 24 MP sensor was developed and that alone may be reason enough for some folks to want to upgrade to the new model. I agree the Visoflex is getting a little long in the tooth and I try to avoid using mine. I mainly use the rangefinder, which is kind of the point anyway. For walking-around photography I simply stop down and use either hyperfocal or zone focussing. Finally, it is also worth noticing that both the M10 Monochrom and M10-R are actually lower priced than the other models.

I feel like the majority of M users would prefer 24 megapixels with better low light. If low light is still great and Leica plans on using this sensor for more products, I guess it would make sense as an investment, but it kinda seems like they’re quickly jumping on the “more is better” bandwagon, when the M system has notoriously represented the opposite.
@bananabear009
@bananabear009 4 жыл бұрын
That’s the dilemma for Leica M. Range finder camera is good for nothing but candid photos. And high resolution sensor would make that very difficult practically. It’s never a “the sharper the better” story for Leica M in it’s legendary history.

I agree with you. For many Leica users, it’s not about the technical sharpness or even the colors, per se. It’s actually about the imperfections, the fall off of light , the rendering of shadows, and how, when used with intention, these elements make for special images. 24mp is, so far in my experience, the upper limit for letting these elements naturally express themselves.

More megapixel does not mean worse iso performance. On 100 pixel level yes, but if you look at images as the same size, there is absolutely no noise disadvantage by more megapixel
@raiqulikesyou
@raiqulikesyou 4 жыл бұрын
Michael Fuchs I completely agree, although it’s not the iso performance that higher megapixels normally affects. More megapixels on a same size sensor means that those megapixels are smaller and capture less light per megapixel on said sensor.

I've owned 4 Leica M's over the years. M8 (with IR Filter) amazing colours and I could focus more consistently then the AF on Fuji X cameras. M9 FF, even better colours, M240 terrible skin tones. but it had video, which was what my wife carried about me shotting our kids doing stuff. (so I didn't get, all that money and it can't shot video). And M3, still have it, it's such an amazing thing in that hand and fun to shot and nostalgic to shot with. (I bought this used in 1989). But now today Im kinda stoked by the EOS R5/6, that focus speed and the lens line up means I can get shots I could never of got before and can't get excited by this anymore. Though if the M11 has a Fuji Xpro3 hybrid VF and IBIS I'll be excited.

Benj Haisch I love the idea of the Leica but so unaffordable. So I decided to train for using a Leica in some future time and my training is as follows. I took my Nikon D3500 (the cheapest Nikon DSLR) added a Nikon 28mm f2.8 D Lens and every control is then set manually. The speed setting is controlled on the camera along with the rangefinder focusing. The aperture is set on the lens and light control is by using an old lightmeter. I found the photography slower but more creative and focusing was surprisingly easy. I love the 42mm view I get with this focal length which fits well with the urban subjects. Since starting this I have also purchased (used) the Nikon 28mm f1.8G lens which I love to but the full manual process is worthwhile. That’s me done.

I picked up a M10 "Betriebskamera" and a Leitz Canada 50mm f2 Summicron-M at the beginning of the year. I'm happy without IBIS's cost and complexity. Leica probably would have to introduce a new lens mount to avoid vignetting: I don't mind a bit of vignetting, but I don't want it randomly located because of where the sensor happened to be when I released the shutter. I let ISO be what it needs to be to give me minimum shutter speed 1/50 or I put marksmanship training to use to control breath and movement. Or I use a tripod. Or a brick wall (got a lovely nighttime shot of the Port of Oakland that way, at Jack London Square a few years ago, with a Fujifilm X100s. My wife wanted to know why I didn't include her in the composition: "You can't hold completely still for 3-secs., babe"). Or...

40mp sensors don't make sense on a rangefinder, which is a basic optical alignment device. If you have to resort to an EVF to nail focus, the analogue aspect is expensive decoration. Also, the examples look like every other digital camera file, no Leica magic there. It'll sell to people who think only Leica know how to make a camera, obviously.

Well the 'Leica magic' from the film days is still the lens, but if you want a digital file immediately and selectable ISO in a rangefinder form factor, then it's either a Leica or old Epson. You are also making an assumption that every situation or user wants to "nail focus" at shallow depth of field. Some users don't care about a little blur, over even desire it, and some users aren't shooting at f1.2 all day.
@borderlands6606

@@Ruylopez778 If you want to zone focus at smaller apertures, there are much less expensive ways of doing so. Back button focus, or use a hyperfocal distance. Rangefinders aren't accurate compared to modern AF where high resolutions can show the smallest errors, nor do they frame as precisely.

Excellent review. I had no less than 9 Leica’s at one time with 4 being digital. However the M9-P and Monochrom had sensor issues and even though the M9-P had no signs of degration the value plummeted. my Leica Q is with Leica for dust cleaning off the sensor - a design fault but I had to pay. So that’s going the same way as the M9-P and mono0chrom and I will have the X1 only. That and 5 Leica film cameras which have never let me down. So for over £7,000 for the Leica M10-R, I will give it a miss. Great review though.

Nothing has really changed in the RF principles since the introduction of the M8. Well the RF has got an update with the M10 but still there is the uncertainty if calibration is accurate and/or has changed. And with 40MP all these issues become even more noticeable. I would at least have expected a newer EVF arriving with the M10R and a better (bigger) battery, as well as the newer Maestro processor. This is a VERY expensive camera and for that price that needed to be changed. I feel I have to wait for the M11 to get the tool I expect (expected) but not sure if it is worth the wait anymore ....

I greatly admire the analog Leica cameras (as I admire other analog/vintage/limited edition models), and if you really want to have a great camera and shoot film, maybe a limited edition that belonged to a photographer who inspired you, then a $8200 price may be justified, maybe - though I wouldn't pay it myself, but ok, to some people it might mean a lot and it is a piece of history. But when we're talking a digital mirrorless system in a retro camera body, let's see if we can justify an $8,2k price: The camera looks amazing when it's sitting on a table but has poor ergonomics when you hold it and almost no custom controls, which complicates its operation, a 1 million dot LCD and 2.4 million dot EVF that comes as a separate accessory - both of these are marketed as "high resolution" on their website, but honestly, I think we all know that almost any camera brand out there offers better LCD/EVF quality for how much less? The EVF accessory blacks out when taking photos which makes you wonder how does that work with a "burst" shot mode of 4.5 images/sec (are we serious?) I wouldn't even mention that - what is the rate of keeper frames on a rangefinder camera, and why would you even need a 4.5 frame a second feature, not to mention a rangefinder configuration limits the scenarios you could use a mirrorless system in, which makes you wonder how frustrating it can get when you realized how much you paid for a decidedly low rate of keeper frames. I'm also willing to bet Leica does not manufacture their sensors in-house so there is a good chance they have a custom-made and unbranded Sony sensor in the camera, that probably costs around the same price point as the sensor in the a7RIII or something. But there is no mention anywhere who manufactures Leica's sensors and Leica doesn't want you to start thinking about the electronics in their cameras because then you start doing the math and begin to realize that the price just doesn't add up. It's like they are the Apple of cameras. They'd much rather you thought of their $8200 camera as an ethereal entity descended from heaven, unmatched by competition, that will just make you a better photographer. That is simply not true. When you do the math, and add up the cost of the electronics in the camera, the cost of the camera body, the material, the paint, the lens and optics, I'm willing to bet you end up somewhere in the range of $1800 - $2000 if not slightly lower, not to mention that UHS-I on a camera of this price is simply insulting. Leica is piggybacking on their amazing analog legacy and adding a $6000 markup at minimum to their mirrorless lineup, but falls short to impress in my book. That is also not a very healthy long-term strategy. Just look at the swiss watch industry, which is now reeling as it begins to be replaced by smartwatches. History has taught us that you either adapt or pay the price. If Leica charged around $2000 for these cameras, that would be a really attractive value proposition for someone who wants to try something different. But $8200? I don't think so. To me this is a dishonest approach towards their target audience, who may have more money than the average consumer, but that still doesn't justify this practice. In my eyes at least, Leica's mirrorless cameras are a very confused offer, trying to cater to inexperienced but wealthy enthusiasts that care much more about the camera as a fashion statement, than what they can do with the camera, or what the camera can do for them. Also, what do you do with 40MP on a hand-held compact camera body? 40MP can be incredibly demanding on the lens, in terms of resolving details and can single out any issues with optical distortion or chromatic aberration, so that lens better be perfect. Who is this camera for again? Well paid lawyers from Switzerland who have no time to research cameras perhaps.

Or a retired gentleman who has used cameras of most brands for over fifty years, and who still owns several different makes of camera bodies and dozens of lenses? And one who knows a great deal about cameras and their capabilities. I get it: Leica is not for you. I feel that a great many Leica users do not fit into the category of "wealthy enthusiasts that care more about fashion statements than photography". If one hastily jumps to conclusions, one is likely to land well wide of the mark.

Theres also some kid in his late 20's that turned to Leica after being tired of plastic cameras and lenses being marketed as premium lines, "compact" mirrorless systems being as big or bigger than DSLR's and as intruding and noisy as a pentax 67, but sure, only Doctors and Lawyers.

@@Gynra I see your point, and I meant no disrespect to you personally, simply pointing out the flawed business model with Leica's mirrorless cameras. If you can afford this investment and cameras have been you life's journey, more power to you. That said, what you described is very much an edge case, more than anything else. I don't know many retired gentlemen who can afford to drop $8,200 on a pocket camera, in a country where people are spending the twilight years of their life struggling without health insurance or barely making rent. @@mateusalves9436 Plenty of cameras are built of metal and offer remarkable functionality and features very much like what you described, without costing $8,200. Just like the other gentleman who replied to my comment, you are also describing an edge case. I don't know many kids in their late 20s who can drop $8,2k on a camera, do you? The Leica M series are interesting beasts for sure. I keep lusting after one, even though when the M10 came out and I demo'd one from the NYC store during PhotoPlus in 2017 (finally being able to afford the body and three lenses). I made the decision to stick with my Pen-F's and small M Zuiko Premium primes for my walkabout kit because I am so spoiled by autofocus. The M10R continues to psychologically tug at my heart, which confuses my analytical brain. I think Hugh Brownstone said it best (summarizing & paraphrasing here) "I want one, but it makes no sense". Maybe it's time to sell a bunch of the old medium format film stuff and at least pick up a used first gen M10 and a used 50 just to scratch that itch... I knew I shouldn't have watched your video, Chris :-p (actually, thank you, it was well done!)

It’s not about the tech in The camera it’s how you actually shoot. I hate these videos that just complain about Leica’s lack of tech and sensors. Like I have so many ppl shooting leica Ms having no issue at all. We all shoot Manuel in campaigns or editorials with no problem I no what I’m doing and I know how to execute it. $8300.00 for this camera? I'm been a pro for many years and the saying was that Leica was a rich amateurs camera. I don't think that's changed. But if you think spending close to 12K for a camera body and one semi wide angle lens that together are not all that great will make you a better photographer, go for it, it's your money.

The colour is incredible, clean, punchy (Nikon to green, Canon too red) viewing on interweb srgb so maybe the shots with red do stand out. Overall just looks really clean and edge sharp. ISO test shots clearly show better across the frame brightness on the M10 with what looks like less noise than even the playstation MkIII or the Z6. Who's it for though, the price is astronomical and all mainstream brands give you way, way more value for money. No IBIS in 2020, really?

That's why image stabilisation is popular with photographers who never shoot video. A 40mp sensor file is capable of being enlarged to the point where even fast shutter speeds show camera movement. It's why lower resolution cameras sometimes appear to give sharper results.

There will be probably very few people watching your video nowadays, being that the M10-R is now old news as even the M11 is; however I had to come here to see what I'll be getting by an upgrade from M10 (purchased used in 2019 but received until late 2021 thanks to some Ch***se that released a bioweapon) to a now _"accessible"_ for me "pre-owned" M10-R. As things stand in lookout I'll be chucking out ~$800 on the upgrade. So far, having neither received my _"excellent-plus"_ M10-R with all boxes and accessories plus an extra batttery, nor having yet put on the block my 2018-ish M10 is likewise condition, I feel -after watching your clip- that the upgrade price is reasonable. Certainly the humongous 40mp files that will come out of it will be superfluous 99% of the time, and only serve as storage hogs; but maybe -just maybe- that 1% of the files will allow me to reframe, or even crop and resize, and get a usable 11x17 out of 50% of the file. Kudos to you for your frank opinions! I was pretty much born into Leica with my father's IIIf which he reluctantly loaned to me for a trip to Europe when I finished college. I returned it unscathed six weeks later swearing I would get me a modern camera, which I did by buying a Spotmatic with a 50mm/1.4 Super-Takumar that soon expanded into a full system. However, at my father's demise in '96 his IIIf was given to me by my mother (nobody else knew what to do with it nor wanted to) and I got hooked on the concept. In 2001 I got an M6 and from there it was a black downhill track to where I stand now. So far I don't print wet anymore, almost never shoot MF film, and the little 35mm film I shoot with my Leicas and Nikons (just for spleen, probably) get prompt process (RA4 & B&W) so they can be converted to pixels and printed digitally or shared in the net. It's good to see DPReview including hybrid workflows. Film, specially RA4 and B&W well processed and archivally stored doesn't suffer from the fragility of the digital media. With 50 years of darkroom experience, both B&W and color, I have a huge legacy of memories and beautiful images that will reach my grand-grandchildren. It's a pity that the much better (technically) digital images probably won't. Will be sure to comment on the M10-R here when it finally arrives. Thanks for the good work!
